Academy 1/72 Scale Messerschmitt BF-109G6 (Brush Painted)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Famed as the nemesis of the legendary World War Two fighters such as the Supermarine Spitfire and the North American P-51 Mustang. The Messerschmitt BF-109 status as a legendary fighter was well earned. For being the main fighter aircraft of the Luftwaffe. And the type flown by many top scoring Luftwaffe aces such as Erich Hartmann.
The BF-109 would appear on multiple fronts during World War two. From the skies of Great Britian, to North Africa, and in the skies over the Russian Front. With multiple variants being produced. And with the type being exported and produced in other German Allied nations.
One nation that operated multiple types and manufactured the BF-109, was the Kingdom of Hungary. As a German ally, the Royal Hungarian Air Force was provided with Messerschmitt Bf109s. In October 1942 the first BF-109’s began to enter the Service of the Royal Hungarian Air Force. With the first Hungarian BF-109 sorties occurring in the same month.
By late 1943 the BF-109s had replaced the Italian Reggiane Re.2000, as the primary fighter of the RHAF. With Bf 109D and E models were used for training, with the F and G models were used for combat. The Messerschmitt Bf109Gs were also manufactured in Hungary, with some components imported from Germany, such as armament and radio parts. As part of the German-Hungarian aircraft construction program.
By 1944 the war on the eastern front resulted had turned dire for Hungary. The nation would become a key battlefield for the Soviet advance towards Germany. At this stage of the war Hungarian BF-109G6s were involved in air combat against Soviet Air Forces. And from May 1944 to August 1944, in combat against USAAF bombers and fighters.
By early 1945 most of Hungary was under soviet occupation. However, several units of BF-109s of the Hungarian Air Force had moved into Austria by March 1945. Which continued to fight until the end of the war, in May of 1945.
THE MODEL KIT
This kit from Academy is a nice scaled depiction of the BF-109G6. Which only comes with Luftwaffe decals. So, I made my own D.I.Y Hungarian decals. Depicting a 1944 low visibility Hungarian BF-109. I also was able to depict the Luftwaffe mottled camouflage. Via the use of a paint brush and cotton buds.
Thank You for watching & Good luck with all your ongoing projects.

Thank you Matt glad you love the look of the BF-109 in late war Hungarian markings. It was fun project to both research and make decals for. Hope this inspires you to make some more custom decals for your models

That's a very nice build. I'm definitely going to try your mottling technique the next time I build a 109.

Thank you I am glad to hear that you are keen try this painting technique on a model BF-109 (or even a FW-190). My advice to test it on an old model (or piece of cardboard), until you feel comfortable to apply it on the models paint work.

I just finished this one myself. Naturally, I broke off the antennae. I'll need to glue it back. I'll also have to revisit the video for the part about DIY decals. This one sat on my paint shelf for quite a while because the camo scared me. Mine turned out all right. Great work. And my pitot tube has been threatening removal since I cut the wing from the sprue.

Thank you. I am sorry to hear you had a few issues with this kit. And were also a bit scared about tackling the camo scheme. But I am happy to hear that you were able to finish the model. After sitting on the shelf for a while. In fact, I have got a few ongoing projects that are sitting on my shelf. Which I need to finish one of these days. Anyway, you should be proud with yourself for completing your BF-109. Finding the motivation to complete a project is always a good thing. Good luck with all your ongoing projects. And thanks for watching.

I did this kit with the same homemade livery. In my case, I reproduced the photo of the crash landing with a small vignette.

Well done that sounds awesome. Loved the fact you recreated V8 53 in its wrecked state, on a small vignette. I might have to make a wrecked aircraft diorama one of these days…….

Very nice work on that great looking aircraft. I enjoyed seeing this come together and painted. I have to ask, what was your ratio to thinning the paint for brushing. I love painting those little planes and don’t use an airbrush, but find it a little bit thick at times. Thanks for sharing.

Thank You I am happy to hear you loved the look of the model. And enjoyed watching the video. As for how much I thin my paint. Its often about three drops of paint to a drop of thinner. In the video when I am doing the mottling, you can see I use a paint pallet and an eye dropper for this task. Not too thin like what I do in the mottling section. Just enough to get the paint flowing a bit easier. I also use soft synthetic hair paint brushes. Flat Heads for flat surfaces, with the strokes running from nose to tail, then wing root to wing tip. With the paint in two to three thin layers. I hope this is of some help to you.

The black primer fills any tiny cracks and gives the color layer better adherence to the plastic.

Well said @Chilly_Billy, that is exactly what primer can do. It also shows up if you have missed any gaps or putty. That needs to be sanded or refilled. Hope this helps you in your modelling.
