Cool video as always, can you do a video on HFT? If you have talked with people are in the business share workflows and experiences from a quant's point of view.

This was such a helpful video, I'm in the same position as the person who asked the question. I'm finding it really hard to get my foot in the door, and I'm really hoping this info will help!

I also feel like the struggle I have who spent 9+ yrs in school is that we're so distant from industry/office environments, it's hard to adjust to outside world and people when all you've been known and had access to was school and university and fellow students.

Great videos as always, can you become a quant without a degree and instead with professional qualifications and work experience? If this is the case which professional exams could I do?

I have a question I have always wanted to ask, and it might not be related to this video so not sure if you will answer or even see this… so I have a master’s in mathematical statistics and I really enjoy credit risk. I am currently working in the Netherlands for one of the largest banks in Europe. I work on the A-IRB side but I have some IFRS9 experience also. I have been a model developer here for the past 3 years getting to know the ins and outs of credit risk model development with a big focus around the regulation of EBA. I have also worked in the methodology team as well as the monitoring team in the bank (so I have some small validation experience). Now, I don’t have a Phd and I do not really see the point in it (it wont advance my career much in the EU)… so my question is, if I wanted to get into a bank in the US, first of all is that even possible coming from EU and getting a sponsor outside of the US seeing how competitive the US is vs EU (there are sooo many banking jobs in the EU). Secondly, do you think a Phd will better my position into getting into the US? I have always wanted to get into the US but never really knew how or to even start the process. Would love to hear your thoughts since you have obviously worked with a lot of diverse group of people. I really enjoy working in a bank and doing credit modelling.

Dimitri I am a petroleum Engineer but I want to turn around my career into financial industry by learning Quantitative finance or doing MFE to become a quant or financial Trader? What advice?

Hey Dmitri, I have a question regarding which undergraduate program you recommend. Should I pursue a degree in financial mathematics or opt for computer science with a minor in statistics or mathematics? I do want to pursue a MFE or even Data Science possibly.

Dimtri has answered beforehand that a "financial mathematics degree" (or "financial engineering") at the undergrad level is far too narrowly focused (ditto the same about "a Data Science degree" in my opinion). You need a broader knowledge base with a major (or double major!) in math/stats/CS (and even what you don't major in, still take plenty of papers in those areas too), before perhaps then specializing further in that at the postgrad level.

Why do you call them (business or science focus firms on the buy side) garbage firms?😊. They make profit...is that not what matters? If derivative pricing, stochastic calculus, statistical analysis, etc. isn't quant, what is? What do sell side folks do? Economics, econometrics, finance, appied economics, that sort of thing? I am confused here...please clarify.

Yes. For quant finance, we typically only accept interns that are working on their masters or PhD.
