AC Dimmer Circuit Using Phase Angle Control

Ғылым және технология

Dimmer circuits which utilize Phase Angle Control are used to efficiently adjust the AC power delivered to AC loads by controlling the conduction angle. In this element14 presents episode, Surbhika has developed this kind of circuit to enable her to dim commonly used AC light bulbs in her home. She found it an interesting DIY project, as it meant understanding one of the fundamental concepts in power electronics and control theory to create usable hardware that could be built on a budget.

It would be handy to have a method of quickly testing led lightbulbs , to see if they are dimmable , this circuit would be a great base for such a project!

Hi thank you for the video. Yes this was a commonly used device for old incandescent lamps and even infra red heaters, we now though use almost exclusively LED lamps in the UK.

True that the circuit is applicable for controlling power to be delivered to almost all AC loads. But it should be noted that special care in form of Flyback diode is necessary while handling reactive (inductive or capacitive) loads.

Great presentation... one small point of order, Phase Angle Control is a 'Noisy' control method because of the discontinuous nature of the output (it is only low noise when switching occurs at the zero crossing assuming that current and voltage are in phase with each other)

Such a simple circuit but quite beautiful.

Can u Help me ? My dimming is working ok but , whenever i m using other non dimmable load throgh relay switching , my dimmable light is flickering , can u have any suggestion?

would this circuit be able to control a ac motor? With modification obviously

Yes. With usual precautions that come with inductive loads.

hmmm what would happen if the pulses and AC power are out of phase?

I guess you mean when synchronisation is broken. Then you might end up increasing the light when you actually wanted to dim it. It'll become random.

I am stumped! Judging by the video, you are using 2 RPis? one to read the AC mains supply analog sine wave, feed that through an opotocupler to the triac and second optocupler somehow (connection is unclear as the video never shows the full project in one image), than use the second pico to send the control to the led bulb via the optocupler and the triac, again unclear from the video footage how exactly they are connected... This can`t be right! surely i misunderstand the whole thing... Perhaps the first part (Zero crossing detector circuit) is a demo of how to separate the mains from the RPi 3v3 voltage, and the second part (AC load driver circuit) is the full project and has nothing to do with the first part?

I have to admit.. I was expecting a traditional phase angle controller built around a triac, not something built around a micro.
