Abuse & Exploitation | Aging Matter | NPT Reports
It is estimated that one in ten adults over the age of 60 is a victim. But the truth is we don’t know for certain how many older adults are suffering from abuse. In "Aging Matters: Abuse & Exploitation", Nashville Public Television explores the issues behind elder abuse, neglect and exploitation.

I’ve been shocked at how openly some family members will try to get an upper hand financially. Keep your affairs to yourself because some people will stop at nothing when $ is involved.

They just come up and say, you need to give me power of attorney. Or you need to just sign the property over. They otherwise provide nothing, not after years to even visit.

@Fancy's it's not only about finances, as obvious. The perpetrators, have sneaky means to get to their intended targets like property but go through subtle very unnoticeable steps to get to what they want.
We just went through this with my grandmother. My uncle who never worked trying to take control of her finances. He moved in to her house against her will. She told him to leave but he refused so my dad went over her house with the cops and they arrested him for trespassing and exploitation of an elderly.
I am 75 going on 76. I am a South African socalled colored woman. I retired at 65 to look after my aging mother, which I did faithfully and with love, until she died. I had family and friends who supported me after her death and when my youngest only surviving son died 7 months after my mother. But things changed! I am alone now! Visits became less, or not at all! Those who come, come, uninvited for a weekend, without a contribution ! Then they have financial problems which they expect me to fix! I am so tired of the selfishness of people. No one seem to realise that the money I have , I worked for for more than 40 years! The obsession with money and exploitation of others, are just above human comprehension. Is this what democracy and capitalism is all about??????? I pray that GOD will save me from senility or dementia! I still have all my faculties and think for myself ! God is good!

The elderly that don't have family to protect or advocate for them, are the most vulnerable for abuse. 😢

Really makes you wonder why they find themselves alone. Were they themselves abusive to their kids, or are their kids selfish? I don’t have the answer obvs, but I do think it’s easy to feel sympathy for the frail old person w/o putting much thought into why they’re alone.

@@KristinA-xv4yk well let me tell you why they find themselves alone. I am old and physically disabled. My adult, abusive son moved in. I can't leave house because he refuses to get WC ramp. When you are old your friends either die or move away. Your remark "were they themselves abusive" sickens me. People like you are directly responsible for abuse. Still I wish You well.

Exactly. That and the threats, and implied threats, that are made in secret, but which terrorize the elder.
I’m glad my mom lived with me and was treated like a queen ..she just passed away in July 2018; ,,I loved her more than anything..I love her and still cry missing her, I’m a RN and I have reported elder abuse in the past ,,,it’s heartbreaking and so sad ...it breaks my heart to see these elderly people abused .......I took very good care of my mama and I’m so glad I was lucky enough to have her and love her ,,,I miss her so much ,,,I still can’t believe she is gone . but I had to let her go she was to sick .. "Emergency shelter for those in a volatile situation who need to be removed for their own safety" ? That's backwards. Why should a victim have to suffer further by being removed from his or her home, while the abuser gets to stay with no consequences ? (This has actually happened to me, but as the case is in the courts I shouldn't discuss it now) ). How about removing the ABUSER instead? Maybe THAT would be the better way to ensure the elder's safety!

@Ricardo (edit) 4 years later, did you follow on doing this? That is, caring for the elderly? Also, if you 'don't see who would want to harm [...] elderly people" please educate yourself first with every tool available, and then, assuming nothing, keep listening to more and more of these experts. It's not always what it seems. And, the lies, are HALF truths. Remember to always follow your instincts.
My Mother died nearly two years ago after my sibling was abusing her and abandoned her. The NYC DA SVU OFFICE would NOT investigate her abuse. I will continue to fight for my Mom. If anyone can help I would appreciate it.
video was done 6 years ago..its 1-25-23 . What do you do when you know your mom is not in a good situation, but putting her in a nursing home these days is just as bad now as ever. I keep the Peace with my sister so I can find out about mom. It kills me😣😭, I had a chance to take mom 5 years ago and I didnt. So I'm no better. Mom is 84 and I honestly pray he will just take her. Thank you for letting me share.😣🙋♀️🙏💝
It is as simple as not wanting to be bothered with the elderly family member bc they are a rock in their shoe. But feeling guilty and wanting to keep a 'perception' / façade of being caring, loving.
Over and over I hear the same things- i am an only child, my mom passed away & my dad is living alone - he is wealthy and 75 with quite a noticeable change in behavior and appearance- a woman 61 has latched on to him & my dads spending has gone nuts. He has sold two properties that he never wanted to really sell. He is liberal and used to be strict and conservative. This woman holds all her family get togethers at my dads house because it's big and fancy- she is always in his phone and listening to his messages- and has access to his checks..my dad says he trusts her, but I just think she has gone over personal boundaries and wants to try to marry him but he told her he won't

"...my dad says he trusts her, but I just think she has gone over personal boundaries..." Understandable, and you may be right. But it's his money. Maybe he wants her to use it. If he is wealthy and 75, maybe he has more than he needs for himself and wants to share it with her. Is he being coerced, or just bewitched? If he isn't complaining, it's his business.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤THANK YOU I AM NOW A VICTIM OF ELDERLY ABUSE IN ST.LOUIS, MO ,USA 10/21/2023
Adult children not taking in their sick and elderly parents to care for them is also "neglect and abuse". 70% of societies are doing that... 70% of adults in many societies today say "thanks Dad and Mom for all the sacrifice of raising me, but sorry don't expect me to care for you..." People have 2000 sq ft homes but they don't have a bed space for their parent.
@lindabrown0

If an adult child is unable to "take in" a parent then place them in a nursing home. It's a duty to see that they are fed, clothed, sheltered, given medical care but sometimes because of childhood abuse that child might not be able to have that parent in close proximity to them or their family. The Bible says "honor thy mother and thy father". It might be enough "honoring" to see that they are cared for but not in your home. Just an opinion.........
My friend was pressured by her son to sign POA. Now we are trying to get her out of nursing home and to live with her brother. The son refuses her visitors puts anyone who visits on do not visit list. Only he can discharge her. I reported it, plan to get her an advocate and lawyer. Running out of time

So we spend millions/billions on social programs yet neglect the people that have paid in to the "system" for half a century? Guess because they can no longer extort taxes from them anymore...So few comments over such an important social issue. Shows how low we have sunk as a society....makes me sick.
Elderly abuse with grandmother stabbed with knife and temper with evidence and the daughter not reported to police both in jail .
These wicked workers have no conscience
Wow... this is hard to watch!
The abuse is not so much the issue as the lack of support from physicians, social workers, and others who CHOOSE to deaf ear to the family member who says something is wrong' though we do not know how to say 'abuse' because the people involved are the closest person in the family genderless! Meaning the perpetrators are (fe)male. They create the perception they are the most reliable, caring.
denying fair TV and WIFI reception and access is cruelty with no setup to report or upgrade also no descanted phone to organize visits during covid19
they tell you if the elder says it is ok. nothing is done
As I respect Elders for their wisdom and experience, but they exploited to the maximum and do not benefit in their old age. today there is evidence that, there is a negative attitude about old people. Abandoned, poor and helpless. This will not go on forever I believe that; "Elders are ever innocent, today it's them!! Tomorrow it's you!" More reports more tears everyday everywhere, “World at large" It is all about Elder abuse!! The reason being that Elders has no tight security. My suggestion is let there be a recruitment of a special police unit for the Elderly and a team whose function is to obtain information and evidence to reduce all risks of Elder abuse. I beg of you for a police force or unit within a police force whose duties and responsibilities to assist the Elders and keep them safe.

I have observed this type of exploitation in a group home as well. The law has not caught up yet.
Well when an abuser family member is caught, it escalated to physical assault, I didn't call police for fear of retaliation, I now have 2 days to move, I just paid them rent. My son is dumbfounded

"it escalated to physical assault, I didn't call police" Happened to me too. And it's not over yet. As soon as I stand up or say a word to the abusers (there are two, not family; they are squatters who I let in on a cold night; they have refused to leave for months) the intimidation and threats of violence and other threats begin. The police will do nothing anyway. Their hands are tied. Squatters have more rights than owners. In fact, the abusers clubbed me on the head, and I was unconscious until the police came and -get this- arrested ME for battery. I was not taken to the doctor or the ER though I had an obvious head injury. Instead I was put in a holding cell, bewildered, for 48 hours or so, then given an O.R. bond specifying that I couldn't return to my own home, which I built and have lived for thirty years and is owned free and clear. It was February 26th and very cold. I am almost 73 years old. I recommend don't ever let homeless people into your home. They will rob you, assault you, and turn your life upside down. If these two don't leave by the 21st, next week, then the City authorities are going to proceed against me in court, my house will be inspected and will fail and be condemned, and I will lose thirty years of a nice paid-for small home where I raised a son for 25 years until his untimely death. Now his bedroom is occupied by the two abusers and their dog and is piled high with dumpster junk and no one in authority will do anything about it.

I am having EXACTLY the same experience as you have described. I am 65 and Disabled. I have had this happen 6 times in the past 10 years since I lost my husband. His friends, I believed that they were mine also, arrived with false condolences beginning 6 days after my husband's death. They wanted me to surrender assets of my 35 year marriage and left taking anything that wasn't chained to a structure. It has happened without any time between incidents, no time to assess the damage or recover from the situation. #7 is occurring now and I don't know if I can recover financially and the stress is getting to my health. I'm not sure that I am expressing the situation that I am experiencing as well as I need to. They are using my windows as doors and moving BOXES of my most valuable items out of my house. They have been doing this for 6 months now. I have not seen any of them work on improving their overall situation and finding a place to live. I have been told by them that they are very familiar with the eviction process and I will have to go through the legal eviction process to get them to move. I have no family left, and I have been too ashamed of the piles of dumpster finds that are quickly burying the carport and the porches that I haven't had any friends over since they arrived. They came with 3 dead vehicles that they are using for a bedroom for their convicted sex offender son. They bully and overpower me and I have NO WITNESSES to substantiate my claim. Senior and Disabled Services haven't been much of a help to me. I'm so distressed and depressed it is draining the will to go on from me. I have worked hard to get my house and property. I should be able to rest and enjoy the rest of my life. This isn't the way that I had planned to live in my old age. I have exhausted my coping mechanisms and feel a constant threat to my financial, mental, and emotional health. I am a hostage in my home, living in fear of what they are planning to do to me next.
THE FIRST THING.. GET AN IRREVOCABLE TRUST.. PERIOD. CAUSE.. ASKING... IS BS.. THEY ARE TOO SCARED OR TOO GONE TO ANSWER!
So many abuse and cruelty in the home and nurses home to. Everything she said is true. Why these employees do at abuse and cruelty to old people. Maybe is the 💰 and more in your home. You people needed to ask more information about a person. Or what crimes then did it the past. You really can't trust anyone with your love one. I work in a memory care unit - unfortunately, verbal abuse from clients or residents is a consistent part of the job. You just have to remember that oftentimes, it's not really them speaking but the memory impairment they're experiencing and all the repercussions that accompany it. Many of the people I work with are just so confused, lost, and feel forgotten. I'm not trying to defend the angry or hurtful words they may say but just try to think, what would you do if you couldn't remember all of the family, friends, and people who cared about you (because you kept forgetting they even existed)? It's not right that it happens but that's why we as healthcare workers must have compassion and understanding.

The friends are getting older and really can’t be much help. The huge problem is keeping them clean and dry ! I am a 82 year old . I live alone. I have urinary incontenience😊. It’s overwhelming...feeling an smelling like urine is so degrading . I try to bathe and change my garments ... but I need help. I have 3 times a week ..could use on a daily basis. However I understand why the biggest complaints from family is these people are always soaked in pee. I think unless you can change them 8 times daily. That is my biggest 😢 problem .
Are things better today?
What I don't comprehend is if emotional, psychological, physical, financial abuse has always existed against elder family member, then why didn't the elder victim report it., Which lets me to believe that before elder abuse, existed and was reported; child abuse, neglect, abandonment, endangernment, malnourished, exploitation etc..., Existed.,
