Abstract Painting Tutorial

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, I demonstrate and explain the creative process I use acrylic paint, acrylic ink, and collage to make 4 abstract paintings from one large piece of paper (300 gsm). I also probably used more yellow than I ever have before - haha!
In the first half of the video, I create freely in order to produce bold, interesting marks throughout several layers of paint and collage on a 24"x18" piece of paper.
At the end, I cut the painting I created into 4, 9"x12" paintings and/or painting starts. I may work more on these later, but for the time being I'm going to sit with them for a while.
Materials used: 300 gsm paper, acrylic paint, acrylic ink, and collage paper.

Really enjoyed the yellow and black…..love that you too leave things for a while before finishing. Also love the fast pace video with the voice over- helpful in processing the information. Like the idea of notTHINKING to much and just going for it! Would like to see what you do with turquoise and lime green ( and black and white,)

Working my way back through some of your earlier videos Jackie and LOVING every one. I struggle with putting a primary up against black and white; for me there's something just too in-your-face and harsh about the evolving results. Yet I'm watching in awe as you demonstrate how it's possible to act as a mediator and to have them dance in step with each other as respectful, trusting partners. This "tribute to yellow" is incredible.

Thank you for another generous, thoughtful response! I love the dancing metaphor ❤️ And it’s definitely an “in your face” color combination - there’s a sweet spot in there and finding it is the challenge for me. (And let’s be honest, my “sweet spot” will be miles away from someone else’s 😆) Of course there’s no reason that you have to have a primary with black and white - you can do any color combinations that suit you. It’s about finding the dancing partners that you enjoy watching the most. The only way I know to do that is to keep showing up and trying out new partners - eventually you’ll find the dancers with the best chemistry in your eyes. Keep auditioning ☺️❤️

(Great meeting you yesterday at the grid journal session.) I absolutely loooove these! I loved it as one big piece before you cut it too. I just love everything about them, colours, shapes. Do you ever work on a large piece with the intention of keeping it whole then look at it and say you know what, I'm going to cut it down, or vice versa?

Thank you! Usually when I set out to do these paper exercises, I plan to cut them down, however, there have been occasions that I like what I’m making as a whole so much that I decide to keep it whole ☺️ So glad you could make it to the workshop yesterday! Would you please remind me of your actual name? I love connecting screen names with real names and KZread pictures are so tiny! 😆❤️

a few moments of pleasant relaxation in the maelstrom of uk's current political and economic meltdown! like yellow white black a lot. have also added turqoise and violet to that mix. sounds a lot but if the yellow is lemony its cool. have great w/e

Thanks so much, Robert! Always happy to be a positive distraction ☺️ I love the idea of adding turquoise and violet. It feels like it could look a bit like a stained glass window - in the sense that it could look like light is shining behind the colors, making them shine brightly. Have a great weekend!

Wonderful as always ♥ Isn't it interesting that so much of our methodology (especially in the beginning) is in trying to find ways to bypass or short-circuit whatever our 'deliberate' choices might be? I wonder what someone like Jan Van Eyck would think if he was able to see you work (!)
