I just recently bought a 2011 F150 Ecoboost with 111k miles. I had done a lot of reading and researching things to do and not do to them. A buddy of mine told me about the Seafoam intake spray. The Ecoboost is a GDI engine and therefore the intake valves are not cleaned with fuel like in a MPFI engine. The Ecoboost, especially the early models like mine, have a lot of issues with carbon build up on the intake valves. I did a lot of researching and even reached out to Seafoam as I had concerns of carbon chunks coming free and damaging my turbos. Those concerns were relieved by not only my buddy's experience as well as the reply from Seafoam. It doesn't loosen the carbon but rather dissolves it so there's no concern with turbo damage. This morning I installed the JTL (now J&L) catch can and got rid of the PCV hose so all the blow by materials will now go in the catch can which I will empty every oil change or so. I'll check it about every thousand miles and might just empty it at that interval, at least til I get to know how fast it fills up. This will help eliminate carbon build up. I also gave it the Seafoam spray treatment this morning and followed the instructions to the letter which you must do for best results. I immediately noticed a difference in the idle after taking it for a spirited drive immediately following the hot soak as recommended. It had an ever so slightly rough idle, especially when the engine was cold which is now smooth as glass. After my joy ride I reset my fuel economy. I've put a good 50 miles on it since the Seafoam and I went from getting about 16 mpg in the city to 19 mpg. With fuel prices I'll take anything I can get. I also noticed quite an improvement in power and how much more overall smoothly the engine operates. I think I'll be giving it a second can and doing this every or every other oil change, even with the catch can. I also saw a video where a guy put a fan in front of the intercooler to keep the turbos cool while applying the spray into the intake. I can't recommend this stuff enough! For $15 it's worth its weight in gold. Same for the catch can. The kit I got is $170 on Amazon but there are less expensive alternatives. The J&L comes with nice hoses and the Ford quick connects. Literally took me 10-15 mins to install. For those of you with 2011-2014 model year Ecoboosts this is a no brainer. I know Ford fixed the problem down the road but I'm not sure when exactly. Cheers.

I was hoping to find someone's story with how it went using seafoam on their ecoboost. You've given me the confidence to go ahead and try it. I'm thinking wait till it's below 40 degrees outside and use some fans on the turbos just to be safe. Did you go all the way up to 2000 rpms when you did your treatment?

@@tomunexplained7743 I did. I rigged the throttle at 2000 rpm and carefully sprayed the Seafoam. When you hear the engine start to bog down stop spraying and let it catch up. I got a bit aggressive with it and made the PCM think it was flooded. Took about 10 mins to work itself out and had to clear a code. Thanks for the kind comment - we learned that responding to customers is helpful to all and causes a meaningful online exchange (versus hostile comments). On turbos: Sea Foam has sold tens of millions (tens of millions!!!) of cans of Sea Foam Spray... Many are applied to turbo-charged engines...ZERO (none, nothing, notta) history of customer or warranty claims causing harm to a turbo. Why? For starters, the application of Sea Foam Spray is NOT related to any of the [turbo context] fear aversion points. Second, engine manufacturers DO NOT do or say the things that people claim (see Magnuson-Moss act). Also keep in mind that many of these contention points originate from fuel additive marketing, which is often fear-based... Ultimately, Sea Foam would NEVER approve or promote application of Sea Foam Spray to a gas turbo engine if we ever thought it would cause ANY adverse effect.

At around 4.5k a noticeable drop in power as a TON of white smoke poured out the assend. Did it for the whole way down the street just about. I’m sure the neighbors thought there was a fire there was that much. After it all cleared out of the motor the power returned to normal. Did a couple 0-60s for good measure after that. Sea Foam Spray is to be applied directly in front of the throttle plate. For one, it's the shortest spray path to a running engine's intake valves. Hey Seafoam! When you say back to back applications, do you mean spray 2 cans in one go (10-12 minutes of continuous spray) or 1 can, then heat soak then drive, followed by another can, heat soak and drive? My Kia is misfiring on start up, and after replacing the coils and spark plugs, this is my next bet on what the problem is! Thanks!

  • @SeaFoamOfficial

Hi BT: We've tried all sorts of 2 can application sequences. What is do is apply one can, hot soak, then drive. I leave the straw in the throttle body and drive at least 10 minutes... Then I apply can #2. Driving between applications allows 2 hot soaks. Hot soaks are a critical part of the process...so doing multiple soaks pays.

Are you saying that the turbo is AFTER the throttle body and BEFORE intake runners/valves? Here's how any Ecoboost twin turbo I've ever seen routes air: Atmospheric air is drawn through an air cleaner, then divides to route through 2 compressors (1 per side) that charge the air, then the charged air is routed to join as it passes through a cooler, then into the throttle body to mix with fuel in the upper engine. After combustion, the hot engine exhaust air heats the turbine side of the turbo before discharging out the muffler and tailpipe.

  • @SeaFoamOfficial

Hi Joshua: If there was one thing I wish more turbo skeptics understood...It would be to understand that most harmful hydrocarbon residue that forms in an upper engine is soft and grimy, and even the baked deposits are soft ash held together by petroleum varnish. [All harmful engine forms/deposits are made up of unburned fuel and oil molecules - It all starts as fluid...there's no hard material like throwing a handful of nails into the throttle body.] If people DON"T understand that, they are vulnerable to imagine things that don't really happen. To your question about spraying ahead of the compressor and intercooler: I would NOT - Sea Foam is made from petroleum oil ingredients intended for hot chambers (like washing dishes, Sea Foam cleans better under heat and compression)...You could end up lubing the inside of your air intake, which would end up gathering dust/fine particles that pass from the air filter. Same concept as washing the outside of your car with motor oil, then driving down a dirt road.

Fear-intended fuel additive marketing has caused a lot of imaginations to go down a wrong path. Think SOFT.

Use only CRC MAF spray (not WD 40) and allow to air dry for at least 10 minutes. No need to disconnect wiring harness. I sprayed the other 2 MAP sensors but they were relatively clean. Ecoboost engines are GDI engines. The damage to the turbo that people are talking about is to the turbine side, not the impeller. The turbine is the part that is driven by the exhaust gases and causes the turbo to spin. What people are claiming is that these cleaners cause more heat to be generated or carbon chunks to break off which can damage the turbine/cat.

Won't this product end up breaking chunks of carbon off the valves, those chunks then go into the turbo charger(s) and then possibly into the CAT causing expensive damage to them. I have a recently purchased 3.5L ecoboost with 90k on it and am really scared to do serious harm to components further on down the line. I want to install a quality catch can, but that won't do anything for the carbon that is already on the valves, correct?

My guess would be because it is possible that if you had large enough carbon buildups, the seafoam could knock it loose in chunks, hitting the turbo potentially causing damage. I'm not an expert by any means, so this is just a guess based on what I know about seafoam and turbos

NO YOU ABSOLUTELY CAN NOT USE SEAFOAM IN A TURBO GAS ENGINE! I AM A Ford technician and I have seen many turbos burn out from the sea foam 2 problems with seafoam first of all it cleans the bearings in the turbo which needs to have the oil on them and it can cause the oil to be cleaned off and the bearings to go out and also the way seafoam works is it gets so hot that it burns off the carbon but it burns too hot for the turbo so it melts the impellers in the turbos especially in the EcoBoost because their turbos are not downline their turbos are built right into the exhaust manifold in which they run hotter than normal so using seafoam to clean the valves in EcoBoost will burn out your turbos I am replacing turbos due to this fact! Use it if you like I make good money when you do. BUT you now have the FACTS.

This video is old and I doubt you guys reply any more. I did read through the replies and you seem very confident that it cannot damage the turbo, and your logic is sound. In fact, the "Ford tech" that spread the video saying turbos will melt is still confusing to me. That people think a turbo running at 20 pounds of boost pulling 3500 pounds at 100mph for 15 seconds produces less heat than a petroleum based cleaner is weird. With that said, is Seafoam willing to back up possible repairs? I recently bought a Fiesta ST. It only has 64k miles, it runs amazing, no issues that I notice, but I want to run this before things get too bad. Obviously after a brief Google you find the myriad of people advocating against doing this, for the reasons mentioned here 50 times over. So if I were to use this product in a perfectly running engine and 5 days later the turbo crapped out, would Seafoam cover the cost of repair there, or would it become a "he said she said" kind of ordeal where there is no definitive proof that Seafoam caused the failure? This is my, like many peoples first GDI engine, and I understand people's (and my own) fear, because turbos are expensive. I also understand that it's pretty illogical that Seafoam would cause the turbo to overheat, and even chunks of carbon seems reasonably unlikely because that's insinuating the "chunk" would make it past the relatively small opening in the intake valve AND survive compression and detonation, to still be large enough at that point to go back through the exhaust valve and damage the turbines.

Turbos have oil feed lines that feed from and go back to the main engine oil. (i.e., should turbo engine owners not put Sea Foam in their crankcase)

  • @SeaFoamOfficial

    @SeaFoamOfficial

    6 жыл бұрын

I think you're supposing that Sea Foam breaks up forms that end up circulating through the turbo's oil supply lines. That is NOT how it works (that's how detergents work). Imagine this: Crankcase residues are heavier forms of petroleum oil - the forms are soft goo, not coarse chunks, globs of gunk, or hard particulates. Sea Foam reliquefies the petroleum goo back into fluid oil. Nevertheless, anything in oil that could obstruct a turbo oil line could not pass through an oil filter. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Chad. Yes, we appreciate healthy skepticism...But unhealthy is tough to overcome. To expand on the pooling concern: Applying too far upstream of the throttle body can cause pooling of liquid. The liquid will rest in a pool in the intake boot...then one day the driver takes a sharp turn and all that liquid fills a chamber...a connecting rod bends = toasted engine. Anyway, having one way to do things correctly is often enough for most of us.
