    This generation of Commodore was sold here in Brazil as the Chevrolet Omega, became known as the "Australian Omega" for obvious reasons. Comfortable, luxurious, but not particularly a fast car with its Buick-derived 3.8L V6 and 200 hp. Things only got better years later, already in the next generation, when the Alloytec 3.6 V6 was introduced. It transformed the car. I wish the V8 was sold here too. But goddamn, seeing this thing flying around the track really makes me see the epic potential of this platform.

    @@SMR311SMR Funnily enough, according to some research I did, GM brought 5 examples (!) of the V8-powered model, supposedly as a gift to dealership owners. And supposedly, there are only 3 left, but in the Denatran website (our national DMV), only one is registered. Here's one of the cars. kzread.info/dash/bejne/c2xtm9GwfM20hc4.html I wouldn't do the matte black treatment, would leave the car all-stock in the appearance and keep the mods (stainless steel exhaust + cold air intake). Here, the same car, no longer with the matte vinyl (these photos were taken in early 2020, so almost 5 years after the video). instagram.com/p/B7rIrMOHMME/ facebook.com/794480340685634/posts/chevrolet-omega-ss-1999-com-motor-v8-57l-e-322cv-a-chevrolet-trouxe-apenas-5-uni/1890558044411186/ Beautiful dark blue paint. The vehicles are registered as Omega SS, have a 5.7L V8 engine in the document and the chassis is from Holden. Interesting how they went on and registered them as a proper SS, instead of just an Omega or Omega CD, which was the trim level officially sold here. I'd love to get my hands on one of these. 😁 Another fun fact: it's in Manaus, capital of Amazonas, largest city of the state and literally in the middle of the Amazon rain forest. 😄

  • @Roddy_Zeh

    @Roddy_Zeh

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Zonda1996 Ironically, the Buick V6 had fame of complicated maintenance here, but I guess it's due to it not being a popular engine, not many mechanics knew how to work on them, etc. I know a collector who owns a few of the Alloytec cars (and dozens of other cars, he's a big Mopar fan) and the highest mileage one was above 250k km, I think. Surprisingly, apart from a fuel pump issue @ some 80-100k km, he never had any issues with the car. But I guess 90-95% of that mileage is highway drive, so that may have been the difference. I remember reading about the Alloytec's problems, specially with the timing chain, if I'm not mistaken. Very sad. In any case, the Buick-powered ones are are decently cheap, I'd be tempted to get one with that engine as well. For more power, there's always a supercharger build. 😁 I know they had supercharged versions from factory too, in Australia, and even Buick itself offered supercharged versions of many of its models in America. Either I'd simply take the stock parts to build mine or go with an aftermarket supercharger, maybe even a centrifugal compressor like a Rotrex... Or...turbocharger. Get some inspiration from the Buick Grand National/GN-X, haha!

    Lotta people who don't know Mt Panorama may not appreciate how tight it is, how many blind corners there are cutting away after rises, the worst being Skyline. This track is probably less forgiving than Monaco.

  • @kasuraga

    it's a terrifying track to run at the limit. It's so narrow, you have zero run off space on 90% of the turns, and the elevation changes so much that it throws the car off easily. I've only ran it in vr on my sim rig but god damn is it a terrifying experience even in vr. More so than the nurburgring.

    Have you ever driven a commodore mate? That ones obviously had some serious suspension and chassis upgrades to go up the mountain at that pace. Your average commodore would be lucky to take a country roundabout at 40kmh without the body rolling over so much you can hear the tyres scrub on the guard liner.
