Very useful information. I have a boy who has abscesses that reoccur near his neck. I'm concerned he's got a small pocket coming up by his jaw. He's so tolerant when I try to relieve him. I'd understand if he lashed out on me as I have been lanced for an abscess and it was incredibly painful even with meds. He's such a good boy. He gives me cuddles and kisses when we are finished.

I have a condition called PVL, so I get recurring abscesses A LOT. Since I was diagnosed last year, I've had over 40 abscesses, and I was hospitalised before diagnosis and develop sepsis. So I definitely know how painful abscesses would be to a poor rat! Great video :)

I’ve found that resolving at home is usually more reliable unless ours an awkward one. When I’ve had abscess lanced at the vets I find that due to the tiny hole they use they often refill, where letting a natural scab form leaning a bigger crater improves the chances. Of course this does really depend on the location. I

He cleans the remaining bits himself then I wipe it daily with an iodine water soaked swab. He gets so many. He was a rescued feeder rat.

My boy has got an abcess on his back. He has had it for a while. Saw the vet who put him on antibiotics (tablets, which was an absolute nightmare to get him to take) and it seemed to be drying up quite well. He doesn't like it when you try to clean it. The pus has a cottage Cheese consistency and it smells too. It's looking nasty again now and it's bleeding. He is also trying to get to it which I haven't noticed before so he is back to the vet tomorrow. I don't want him to have to have any surgery because he is elderly so fingers crossed the vet can put him on something strong enough to get rid of it once and for all. After watching this video, I'm going to ask for them to take a sample of the pus and get it checked too. Thanks for posting this. It's so helpful to watch videos like this when you have concerns about health care.

Ive got a mouse about 1 year and a half years old and shes gotten real skinny and loss of hair and that’s probably just because of her old age but shes got a lump on her muzzle , the side of her nose and its scabbed now, took her to the vet but they couldnt test her as she was so thin . There was pus just by looking at it but also a hole in it looking like a tumor so we have no idea what it is , shes showing no signs of pain either and its not growing , about the size or a marble . Any idea what this is? Thank you x

One of my rats has a round ball under his neck. I have only had him for a few days and it has grown fairly quickly in that time. He doesn’t seem very bothered by it though. I was worried at first that he had cancer developing but after watching your video I think it could be an abscess. He is a little over 8 weeks old. Should I continue to let it grow and see if it will scab over? Also, for young rats do you suggest anything to keep them calm while putting a warm wet compress on the neck area?

I’d also like to add, if you have a rat with a one around the neck, pull the skin gently so that when you squeeze anything out the abscess, you don’t put pressure on their wind pipe. (Source: a boy who occasionally gets abscess around his chest/neck)

so my rat has what i assume to be a cyst from getting bitten by another rat during introductions. this cyst keeps coming back over a few days after it having poped and dissapeared. so I've cut the fur around it to better keep an eye on it (just started doing this for like a month now) she's had about 5 different cysts in the same spot in the span of the 1 year she has lived for now. we went to the vet with the first one and got antibiotics which kinda worked but the cyst comes back again after a short period. I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to do about it or if it's recommended to shave/cut fur around the area or not and is there something I can do to kinda help this circle come to an end? so far I've cleaned out with "salt" water (something i bought) and I was told previously to use alcohol to clean the outer area but it seems kinda harsh ^^' and then sometimes have put antibiotics on the wound left behind aswell as given it as medication during the amount of time that the vet specified (or try to as I'm not that good at remembering ^^')

Both my boys seem to have preputial abscesses, they've both just turned 2. They seem to have some firmer lumps closer to their penis, with bruising on the sheath.. my vet is investigating further to make a plan for treatment which likely includes surgery. What are your thoughts on this? Would the smaller lumps closer to the penis be tumors? I'm very worried for my boys, they're very healthy otherwise, both abscesses have popped, but the smaller lumps are intact

Hi there my rat has one on his leg bit it's been there for a few months now. He's gotten it drained at the vets before, and it filled up again. I took him to the vets about a month ago to get it looked at again, and he said so keep an eye on it and leave it for now unless is gets bigger or he starts acting strange. It has a big scab at the end and it looks like it's so ready to burst. Should I encourage it to pop by the warm water compress? Since it's on the leg I'm worried because you said ones on the bone are much more serious. So I'm not sure weather I should encourage it to pop or not

Hey Isamu - one of my boys had a pretty nasty fight with a cagemate about 3 weeks ago. He got a lot of nasty bites to his back which took a while to heal. The largest of them has mostly healed up with a small scab left, but I can see the skin around it is quite raised and it is close to forming a small 'hump' (noticable when I stroke him). Could that be an abscess forming? Should I try lift the scab or let things play out naturally?

My boy Tallis has had a lump on his back for around 10 months. When it was really tiny, one vet said it was a cyst and to leave it alone. It grew very slowly over time and it was about the size of a 5p coin and had a large opening/scab so I took him to the vet last week and he squeezed it and all this rubbish came out - it was all solid and crumbly - he said it was an abscess. So, I'm a bit confused, was it a cyst or an abscess? It's now encapsulated and has started to heal over now. He's on Baytril (couldn't get him to take Doxy, and I'm too scared that I'll aspirate him by accident if I syringe him). Have to say, he definitely has a spring in his step now!

I watched this video when you first published it, and I referenced it again because I have a buck with an abscess that popped/ruptured. I thought he had a tumor, so I made a vet appointment, but before his appointment came up, his lump started oozing and it was terribly smelly! I’ve been making warm compresses and made a saline solution to flush out his wound. He has a large dark spot on his skin, but I’m guessing that’s normal. His behavior is normal, he’s eating/drinking fine, so nothing to cause concern. I’m just wondering, how long does this terrible smell last? Lol

  • @IsamuRatCare

    @IsamuRatCare

    3 жыл бұрын

The dark spot is probably the scab, if you can soak that off it will help it heal faster. The smell disappears when the abscess is nice and open and dried out. If there’s still puss it’ll still stink.

One of my rats has a crater that I think is a popped abscess or cyst. I took her to the vet but she had no idea what it was and just told me to put an antibiotic cream on it everyday. Despite doing that the wound is not healing after a few weeks, so I'm getting concerned. Most online sources say a wound like that should heal in about 12 days. It is quite red and raw looking and the edges are hard and rubbery almost like as if you took a chunk out of a hard boiled egg. Do you know why this is not healing and what else I can do about it?

  • @IsamuRatCare

I wonder if there’s some sort in infection around it. I’d try cleaning twice daily with dilute hibiscrub or similar chlorohexidine containing solution and see if it improves. If it doesn’t improve in 3-5 days I would consider asking the vet to try and surgically take it back to good skin and have a good look underneath. There might be something causing issues. I remember a friends rat with a really stubborn throat abscess that they found actually was caused by a small fragment of bone that had got stuck in that area and was constantly irritating it. Surgery resolved it and it finally healed

Abscesses tends to feel a bit like a balloon so they have a springiness to them. Tumours tends to either be squishy (normally fatty lump/mammary) or firm and sometimes fleshy. It’s a hard one to describe but once you’ve felt a few they are pretty distinctive. Abscesses also tends to be in the skin layer (unless they are glandular) where tumours tends to be under it

Hello I’ve adopted a rat who didn’t see her friend pass and the reason I bring this up is because it’s happened to a rat I had when I was younger - the surviving rat grew a growth from the stress of the death perhaps. I live in south east London and I’m not sure what vets will handle this well as when I was younger they put my rat down which isn’t what I want to do. She’s pretty happy so I’m not sure if I want to fiddle w her at the vets but ofc don’t want this to get worse. It’s a soft lump on the left side of her belly. I’m keeping an eye on whether it’s growing. If anyone has any ideas I’d be really grateful. Kind wishes and thanks for your time!

It never had a head and was removed surgically once but came back so Charlie was pts the second time after it grew too big and started affecting his QOL. It was bang in the middle of his neck. Have you ever come across that before? I’ve never seen anyone else have the same problem. Thanks 😊

It sounds like possibly salivary gland blockage or infection, though they have a couple different gland around there. It can be awkward to shift but I would recommend clavamox if you do see any more in the future

It does depend a lot on the size, it can take 1-7 days commonly but a small slow filling abscess can take longer

Oh my poor Bercow boy! Give him a scritch for me please! Just been dealing with a neck abcess in my old girl, 🤞 cleared up now! A good few years ago I took in a neutered buck from the London dungeon rescues. They had horrific abscesses with a nasty bacteria that was ab resistant. Only way to get rid of the problem was to let the mischief die out and then wait a couple of months before getting more. They were the stinkiest I've ever had! 🤢🤢🤢(and normally abscesses don't bother me!)

Yeah I was very much thinking of the London dungeon abscesses when I was talking about nasty bacteria. I didn’t have any rat’s from there but it hit a couple friends hard and they had to let groups die out too.

It can be as a skin disinfectant though it’s more usually to use a chlorohexidine containing wash like hibiscrub as it’s a bit easier to use and doesn’t stain everything as much (also smells mildly better too)

I had 2 early rats point to sleep because there head tilt didn’t resolve with meds so “must have been a brain tumour” thankfully I know a lot better now and vets are more familiar with rats as pets. It still makes me sad though

Clavamox is definitely the best for most post op abscess. Baytril does very little, it just doesn’t penetrate puss well

Isamu Rat Care I’ve been told amoxicillin will be the next course if this fails. But I’ve been doing warm compression alongside the antibiotics and it’s gone down tremendously and the vet is very happy with how I’ve treated him off my own back! I also made a saline salt solution with manuka honey and msm and I use it to flush the abscess after doing the warm compress. He doesn’t enjoy it, but definitely felt the relief once it had halved!!

It’s twice daily and the dose is typically 30mg/kg. How much to give would depend on the rats weight (grams if at all possible) and what concentration of clavamox you have available. I can help if you can provide me with this info If you can get hold of metronidazole/flagyl as well that will increases the chances of it working with facial stuff

@@IsamuRatCare he's been losing weight these past few days and weighs only 294 grams even tho he's an adult. the concentration of clavamox is 500mg/125mg and i have bought metronidazole tablets too and it's concentration is 400mg. i have also bought ibuprofen( conc. 400mg) to help relieve the pain but it contains paracetamol too ( conc. 325mg) so im not sure if it's okay to give him that or if it's too strong and i need to buy one with less concentration?? thank you so much for replying.

So your lad needs Clavamox (30 mg/kg twice daily): 9mg needed. Those tablets are massive so you would need to crush really well into a fine powder then make into a solution (water or better still something a bit thicker like coffee syrup). I would probably do it in 10 ml (or if the tablet is easy to divide do 1/2 a tablet crushed with 5ml). This gives you a 62.5mg/ml solution and he’d need a dose of 0.14ml twice daily Metronidazole (40mg/kg once daily): 12mg needed Same as above, crush and dissolve in 10ml liquid. Then give 0.29ml once per day With both of these I would be very sure they are well mixed prior to giving him any In tens of the pain killer I would get kids ibuprofen or paracetamol suspension, it’s a lot easier to dose than something containing both. I would only give one of the two. Kids Paracetamol (eg Tylenol) assuming 160mg/5ml would be 1.8ml as a mid range dose up to every 4 hours but I’d do twice daily. Get the other stuff in first though as this is a large volume of liquid Kids ibuprofen suspension (eg Advil), assuming 100mg/5ml suspension. 0.3ml up to 4 times a day, again I’d give it twice daily to start with
