Roccascalegna - Castello and village, Chieti, Abruzzo, Italy
Roccascalegna is a small and enchanting village located in the Chieti province of Abruzzo, Italy overlooking the Maiella National Park. With its origins dating back to the 12th century, Roccascalegna is characterised by its quaint narrow streets and ancient stone buildings and, of course its famous castle also known as Abruzzo's ‘the castle in the sky’. The castle stands proudly on a rocky spur from which it dominates the surrounding area and offers stunning views of the beautiful Abruzzo countryside that stretch for miles.
Roccascalegna’s castle was initially constructed in the 11th -12th century as a watchtower of Lombard origin and then, during the Norman domination was expanded to become a fortress.
We followed the tour from the leaflet you are given at the ticket office which allows you to discover the main rooms and towers including one dedicated to torture instruments!

I am originally from Gagliano Aterno Province of Aquila, before emigrating to the states, in 1958. It is located in the subequana valley . Settled by the Peligni and Aequi 4500 years ago. Controlled by the Counts of Celano during the middle ages and noted for the Lazzaroni Castle. You might want to consider visiting the Marsica region settled 4500 years ago by the italic people known as the Marsi and ruled by the counts of Celano in the middle ages. Aielli Alto is a beautiful town at 3000 ft altitube and is known as the borgo dei murales, or town of murals.. Celano, is about 6 Kilometers from Aielli and is known for the Piccolimini Castle, seat of the Counts of Celano. This castle has been turned into a museum run by the province. Just below the entrance of the castle is a gelateria that produces exquisite gelatos. The owner won an european competition for his gelatos. You can find youtube videos of both of these towns. Quite an experience You might be interested in the historical fiction books of Colleen McCollough. In her historical fiction books starting with "The First Man in Rome goes into the history of Rome primarily but also deals with the Abbruzzi region including the Social Wars of 80 BCE. The book starts in 100BCE and covers Rome as well as the area known to the Romans as Aprutium or the Abbruzzi.
Thank you so much for sharing, I love that you take us around on your trip, it's very interesting, and a beautiful side of the country, please keep posting, I love Italy.
