If the M256 120mm gun isn't maintained properly, remnants of the combustible cartridge case can "Flare back," into the turret. People who violate safety doctrine and hold a live round to speed the process of loading the next round instead of removing a fresh one from the ammo compartment have died, or caused the death of another crewmember in a flareback. It is interesting that while unassing the vehicle for stupid safety reasons (the danger was over before the loader started freaking out) they chose to congregate in front of the coax port and the fifty-cal, that they hadn't cleared. Call the tower, clear your weapons, return to the tank line and have the stupid/lazy mechanics adjust the timing of the aftcap deflector, check the O rings on the bore evacuator and return to training. I may know a bit about this subject.

I got on the M1A1 in 1987 B 3-64. We were aware of flarebacks. Bore evac seals very important. Aggressor MG

Lap loading isn't the issue, as you said lack of cleaning is, if lap loading is so bad we wouldn't do it

This is not unique to the Abrams, the Russians experienced this for 40 years. I was in a M728 which is basically an M60 converted into a bull dozer with a 155 mm canon, 2 flare backs and both due to complete neglect. A breach loader cannon absolutely needs adjustment and maint on a daily basis if in use. I personally believe the Russians went to Auto Loaders for,,, partially this reason. If you are wondering why they frantically dismounted you are right, this team needs some time to mature.
