About the Nokota Horse | Rare Breed | DiscoverTheHorse
When horses were accidentally fenced into a National Park, a piece of living history was enclosed within.
These horses ended up being fenced in, in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park in the early 1950's, when the park was fenced in. Thought to trace back to Sitting Bull's war ponies. Their ancestors include early Native American and frontier ranch horses.
For at least a century horses lived wild in the rugged area of the Little Missouri Badlands. Harsh winters, hot summers and rugged landscapes made these already tough horses even more durable. In the 1950's when they were fenced into the National Park, they received a certain amount of protection from the fences, but their story doesn't stop there. In the 1980's two brothers, Frank and Leo Kuntz started buying horses from the National Park Service round ups in order to save the horses from slaughter. In 1999 the Nokota Horse Conservancy was created and the breed registry was formed. Today they are being used for all types of disciplines, from dressage to mounted shooting. Blue roan is the hallmark color of the breed, but they also come in a wide variety of other colors and patterns. Nokota horses are known as sound athletes. They develop strong bonds with the people they trust. There are less than 1,000 Nokota horses worldwide.

The nakota truly is a one of a kind horse. So intelligent, and beautiful, and kind. I hope the population of nakota horse will increase over the next few years. Also, RIP Leo Kuntz, you will always be remembered for protecting the Nakota breed I hope we will see the nakota horse in shows and eventing soon.

Leo was a good man. I worked at the grocery store in Linton for almost a year, and also lived on Frank’s farm for a bit. Both are and were great friends

One of my favorite horse breeds in Red Dead Redemption 2. An underappreciated horse both in the game and in real life. They're very beautiful.

Thankful that some were saved! How typically short-sighted that so many of these incredible horses were sent to slaughter---BAH!
Never heard of this breed before, what a history! And gorgeous horses - especially the blue roan. 🤩
I love what was said about becoming the horses person for the rest of their life . Also the cattle dog has a black spot on its back like my dog had . She was a cattle dog and German shepherd mix. Love seeing the horses and people .
The blue roan is gorgeous!
You can see ( or it’s my imagination) the wild look horse in them.. almost like a Donkey lookish horse… You look beautiful on them…
Such a large history they have. Nice to meet them in your videos. They are all beautiful, but the bleu roan is gorgeous. 🥰
Nice horses size and confirmation and that crazy blue roan.

I've always had sn interest in them! I wonder what actual breed they are bred down from....like which breeds are part of their background? It'd be interesting to find out. They're kind of distinct looking.
Sorry about my english. I come from Germany. Is the Nakota horse just a trekking horse also for using long distance with heavy bugs? I hear from this horse First Time from the Game rdr2. 😂

I currently have the blue roan in the game ❤️
There us so much more history then what is being said here , The Metis and the Nakota bred these horses The Dakota and Lakota did not have there horses untill Peace was made at Devils Lake. These are the horses my ancestors rode to Batoche when White Cap rode with Charles Trottier. So much missing history
Though Horse slaughter plants are closed down many horses are still being shipped over to Mexico and Canada in the thousands. Urge your elected officials for the passage of the Safe Foods Act.
Rdr2 gang
Alba! :D
Weird to see frank on video not face to face
They look like I would imagine an Indian horse would look.
But where they come from, who brought them ?

The Metis and Nakota bred them
And now the scum Park Service wants to eradicate them in the park.

Snowflakes to the rescue 🎉❤ don’t saved sitting bull horses and be louder for giving them the holy sacred Black Hills ones for all.😂😢😁🤬
So actually, the Nakota really isn’t a certain breed. They are a combination of ranch horses that were fenced in in the SE part of the Badlands, they aren’t a purebred like the quarter horse or thoroughbreds. Their color is gorgeous! But they are NOT PUREBRED, ARE THEY.
