I saw the movie yesterday and loved it. One day later I’m now looking for reviews and I really appreciate the way you talk about it. Subscribed!

One character in Ceylan‘s film Distant is a photographer too, and it features an interlude where he and the other main character go on a trip photographing in the mountains / countryside, resulting in pictures comparable to those in About Dry Grasses. That Ceylan is into photography is part of his story as a filmmaker, I think. He comes fairly early to digital cinematography, with the film Climates, where he introduces his, as you said in video, visual style that is unlike anyone else’s out there. It’s been years since I saw The Wild Pear Tree and Winter‘s Sleep, so it’s hard to evaluate them so fully, but I think About Dry Grasses has the perfect balance of emotional engagement and enjoyment / ease to watch of those three.

NBC is one of the least watched directors in Turkey unfortunately. Just like Orhan Pamuk who is one of the least read authors in Turkey, who won the Nobel Prize. If you love NBC movies you might also like Orhan Pamuk, especially his novel ‘Kar’ which means snow. Just thought you might like it.

I’ve been trying to get more into this director’s work. So far I’ve seen Distant and Once Upon a Time…. Unfortunately, this movie hasn’t made its way to Boston yet.

Can you talk about why you found the „breaking-the-fourth-wall“ scene profound? I thought about it fora while but I still don‘t see why NBC felt this was necessary - to me it feels a bit gimmicky, although I loved the rest of the movie…

I was shocked by that scene when it happened and I am a little split on whether it should be in the movie. Either way I did find it somewhat moving. When I think back to the movie, the first thing that comes to mind is loneliness. I guess the dry grasses are probably the people who for one reason or another have been deprived of something akin to water and light. Samet stepping away is a lonely moment. He removes himself not just from other people but from the world itself. This happens at a moment that is intimate, but also a bit contrived or performed. Samet has really tried to orchestrate the entire thing, pretending to bump into Nuray, tricking her into a date, lying throughout the entire movie, etc. I think the behind-the-scenes angle fits with how produced the date is and maybe alludes more generally to a tension between performance and intimacy. Maybe a simpler way to think about it is that Samet tries to act like a movie star, but can't escape reality (although ironically this is shown by smashing the reality of the film). I think that's a bit too reductive, but it hints at the themes of artifice, loneliness, and intimacy, which I think are key. I can't really put into words how they relate but I think I have experienced similar moments.

@@TobinFitzthum Thank you for explaining your point of view. This broadens my own reception and thoughts about the movie. I really like the way you describe the characters and topics. I also understand better now how the scene-behind-the-scenes fit into the arranged and manipulative context of the date. Were you also impressed by how good the actors were? The scene in which Samet with a certain cruelty tells Kenan about the night he spent with Nuray comes to mind, the subtlety Kenan’s actor displays when portraying the heartbreak and shock. It‘s only one example, the acting in general was very convincing to me.

@@christophlohnherr Yeah the acting and the writing here is amazing. It's almost hard to believe that this is a movie at all.
