About Bach Megatone Mouthpieces

It seems there's some confusion on what Megatone mouthpieces are... Hopefully this video clears that up.

    Re: "This is a normally proportioned mouthpiece on the inside" (Bach Megatone) Well yes for the most part - but the Megatones are not 100% the same as the standad Bach's on the inside. The regular Bach mouthpiece models have a #27 drill/bore/throat and the Megatone versions have a #26 - the cup and backbore are essentially the same (albeit the slight change in bore forces very minor changes). And the reason for this is that the extra weight of the megatone also affects the feedback the player receives and it'll firm up the slotting a bit - both of which can give the impression that there's more resistance (even though there isn't really)

    The printed mouthpiece (intonation woes aside) sounds almost like the instrument has a cup mute. Interesting to see the effect on the sound, even if it makes it impractical for normal use.

    Been looking for a demo of this style of mouthpiece before replacing my flugelhorn with a megatone -- THIS VIDEO HELPED in more ways than I assumed. I've got an antique trombone from a trader magazine in HS which came with a mouthpiece cup I'd never seen or played since cause I loved the shit out of that style of mouthpiece and in buying a flugelhorn I've been searching for anything to replace it's mouthpiece only to discover the name of the shape of my favourite trombone mouthpiece.

    I use a Megatone 3C trumpet mouthpiece as my daily driver. While i think the differences are too subtle for an audience to pick up, what I like is how it redistributes the weight of my instrument. With other mouthpieces it can be a bit bell-heavy, but with this mouthpiece it makes the weight much better balance. Not to mention it’s a Bach, which I tend to find most comfortable.

    It took some getting used to, but I started using a Bach 5A on my Olds Ambassador cornet for sitting in with my kids' homeschool orchestra and it did darken the tone noticeably. Haven't tried a Megatone, but it's my impression EnglishTMTB has the right of it in a previous comment.

    Can you make a video concerning the meaning of mouthpiece specifications? Something that explains how all the different parts of a mouthpiece change/affect the sound. I haven't yet found a video properly explaining this. I find your videos very interesting, but I'm lost when you talk about "shanks" and "bores" and things like that.

    Yes each instrument has it's own range of acceptable depth of cup for their prospective mp's, stray past these and the results are dire :D i found the shape of the transition from cup to the throat of the shank and the size of the hole to be crucial when designing my tuba mp. I wonder what changing the cup shape from a curved "U" shape to a straight sided "V" would produce? btw Trent, thats a beautiful looking MP in your trombone :D

    When I played trumpet (I do trombone and euphonium, now) I used a Schilke 13A4 for years and loved it. It gave a bit of help with the upper range, but would still open up nicely in the bottom of the horn. Worked very well with my old Claude Gordon Benge.

    I play both the normal 2C and the megatone and I noticed recently that the high B is flat with the megatone but with the regular I can play it in tune. For the rest the megatone is darker, blends more with violins, has a more objective, less lively timbre which imho suits well contemporary classical music which we all love of course :-p

    A trombone mouthpiece doesn't fit far enough into a trumpet receiver to be any useful. But Jazz trombonist Wycliffe Gordon uses (I believe) a sort of double cup mouthpiece with interchangeable shanks that works on both trombone and trumpet, and he's frequently seen using it too.

    Megatone mouthpieces are cheaper to make because of less lathing, but around twice as expensive as standard Bach mouthpieces. Also, the primary reason they have a different tone, is the bore (throat) is slightly larger. Still fine mouthpieces, though.

  • @royalcat10

    @royalcat10

    I do believe so. Different mouthpiece manufacturers make mouthpieces differently. It's most likely that they are using the same model as these trumpet mouthpieces displayed here, but I'm sure there are some makers that make their mouthpieces exceptionally deep. You can always just ask your friends if you can see their mouthpiece if you're truly curious. Also, I've used my bass trombone mouthpieces on my tenor for when I accidentally misplaced my tenor mouthpieces and everything was perfectly okay. I've even used a tuba mouthpiece on my bass trombone, and while obviously the partials and just general playability was all out of whack, the intonation didn't seem to suffer all that much. This makes me wonder how much of Trent's experience is caused by the depth of the cup, and how much is caused by the material.

    Arin George the schilke 51d is interchangeable with euphonium I'm not sure what you mean when you ask which one is the trombone equivalent because they're basically interchangeable lots of trombonist use the 51 D as their normal trombone mp. A schilke 50 maybe? I've tried schilke 51Bs and they have a little bit less of the darkness and more of the tromboney edge you might be looking for.

    I bought a megatone 3c today, and the differences between my regular 3c and the megatone were not in the slightest bit subtle. For me personally, it works incredibly well. I can play with much more accuracy, force and range than I could on the standard mouthpiece. Perhaps it's that slightest bit heavier, but the upsides outweigh that con to an unmeasurable extent.

    Your printed mouthpiece was too deep to be effective. I think that the best comparison you could show would be between an American cornet mouthpiece (essentially a trumpet mouthpiece with a cornet shank) and a British cornet mouthpiece (which is very similar to a flugelhorn mouthpiece). There is a large difference in tone. I believe Dennis Wick has both.
