Aboriginal woman’s ‘mystical views’ halt seismic testing

Sky News host Andrew Bolt has expressed disbelief over Woodside Energy’s seismic testing being stopped after an Aboriginal woman claimed it would disrupt the songlines of whales.
Raelene Cooper claimed she hadn't been consulted enough about the seismic testing and expressed concern over what it would do to the songlines.
Woodside told the federal court it had never been told of any whale songline in the area of its project until it read an affidavit from Ms Cooper.
“So this is why a major gas project of importance to all Australians is being halted - because one woman, with mixed heritage, has mystical views which she claims come from Aboriginal culture,” Mr Bolt said.
“I may be too cynical, but I often wonder how many Aborigines today sincerely believe such stories and how many just use them for leverage, for one reason or another.”

Not so surprising when you contrast, for example, SA law professor Michael Detmold's understanding of Aboriginal tribal culture and "sovereignty" with say, former Federal Court Judge Douglas Drummond's much better informed views. You can see these quite different views by reading Detmold's article: Unconstitutionality in the Voice Amendment and Drummond's article: The Queensland Government Endorses Domestic Violence. Prof. Detmold seems to have what Bess Price has described as a "Disneyland" view. Aborigines aren't an homogeneous group. We shouldn't think of them that way, as Warren Mundine and many others of the No view keep telling us. Furthermore, "The Gap" is really between the experiences and conditions enjoyed by employed, urban aborigines and those still living remotely, often stuck painfully between tribal and modern modes of living. Bess Price's recent article: Making Life Even Worse for Us describes some of the issues.

Nor do they care. Power is all they want and Dividing Us is how they can achieve it. The whole "White, Black, Brown, Yellow, etc. and so-forth" is a *Very* recent development in our history. Our ancestors didn't see each other like that. "What Tribe are you from?" "What Country are you from?" "What do your People do?" These and your actions, especially your actions, were what you would be asked. If you were worth a damn, you might be able to take the other man's daughter's hand in marriage and/or do business with him. The shade of your skin didn't mean nearly as much as it means today and that's because of some folks who have done their best to take our world from us and divide us to keep us from getting it back.

All indigenous peoples in every continent have been under genocidal attack since western civilization discovered them but want their land. Aboriginal and Torres Islanders lived with the land they had the longest running tribal organized society going back many tens of thousands of years. So if an aboriginal says the land should not been seismically shaken. And her human rights and belief in song lines are just as valid as the science of industry. I believe this lady and she is tuned in. Aboriginal people have been attacked and told to just go off to bush and die off. They are inconvenient to the use of their traditional lands for mineral resources. Disgusting racism to say Raylene is a nutter with no truth. Everything is connected. The song lines are everywhere not just on land. Saying they were stone age living they had a very balanced life with the land and sharing it with the animals. That does not make it less worthy than modern electricity gasoline driven society.

Thanks Andrew. Please keep airing these kinds of 'insightful' and 'obviously truly representational' views that all australians support? I keep hoping that we will get past this and realise that we are not an aboriginal country. We are a multicultural country of 25 million people from all around the world and what is best for the majority is what we expect our 'fairly' elected politicians to deliver.

Their only interest in each other was fighting and stealing land from each other. The Aboriginals were not a civilization, nor a nation. They can only talk to each other now thanks to English.

It became clear to me back in the 1980s that the indig 'Dreamtime' malarkey was NOT indig religious or spirituality beliefs BUT a mis-appropriation of a term from what we Anglo/Celtic/Saxons have done since time immemorial. Their DREAM-time stories are nothing more than our BED-time stories. Since day dot, fables, myths, parables, nursery rhymes, or simply creative stories full of mystical fairies and dragons or whatever have been told or read to young children to send them off to sleep. There is no way in the wide world that the average indig adult believes that fiction is their real religion or spiritual zeitgeist. Of course, there is always a minority of off-with-the-pixies people in A/C/S society who believe a little too much mythology is real, just as there might be a minority of indig people who buy too much into their mythological tales. [Let's not mention mental health situations or too many drugs ...] However, there is always a bell curve to measure most things and I bet the bell curves for both A/C/S and indig run parallel for this topic.

Just checked a scientific paper on Whale Song. Longitudinal studies suggest there have been no changes in the song of individual whales measured over short time, yet changes in the average song manifestations over time. The scientists feel in the post whaling era, whales have the opportunity to grow greater mass, which influences the acoustics of the measurement of the average song manifestation of the entire pods over time. More bigger, older whales in the group.
