We are sailing an Ovni 32 and if one day we safe enough money to upgrade, this boat would be our choice. With just under 12m, it’s a perfect size for shorthanded, comfortable and wallet-friendly sailing. After 30 years, our boat has aged very well, in particular the interior wooden furniture is still in excellent condition, and Alubat is known for quality welding and great after-sale customer care. Last but not least, there is a well organised online community of Ovni owners, ready to help finding solutions to any problems you might encounter. Btw, you did an excellent job with this video, really enjoyed it 👍 Merry Christmas to all!

What an absolutely sensible boat. I tire of seeing one-after-another that are built for the racing crowd; no offense intended; when many adore the cruise and care less about speed. Now all I have to do is start life over and setup a special savings account. Modern boats don't really call to me, but this one is almost screaming my name. Not often that you see such superior utilization of the available volume, and the construction makes me think of a seagoing tank that's going to get you back, from way out there. Congratulations to the designers and hope the builders make a marina full.

It is telling that this day and age a well placed handrail to get onto the foredeck is worth spending 20 seconds on. I suppose one can be (somewhat) hopeful that sailing does not succumb to getting drunk on a dock in the marina. It is good that some boatbuilders still make sailboats, not party platforms.

Terrific video. I really enjoy them. Being a bit of an old busy body and old photographer for a minute..... For shots through glass like the down the keel compartment, get a piece of black cloth probably 2m x 2m would work. If you use rip stop nylon it would be super compact and lightweight ( You would need to hem the edges.) Then you just drape it over your head, maybe tape down a corner or two. I think you'd be surprised how quick, easy and useful it would be. (I've done this for many years as a photographer. In a pinch just about anything will work.) If you have some kind of a collapsible pole and can sew a slot along one edge you can have someone hold it up. Make the slot fit a boat hook - there'll always be one of those onboard. (Or just tape the fabric to the ceiling) for shots out of the portholes. (I always have a slit in the center of my panels that I'd poke the lens through, then I and my camera won't reflect- at worst will just be a small dark circle of the lens. I keep the slit from hanging open with just a piece of gaffer tape. (What's the difference between gaffer tape and duct tape? It won't pull off the paint if you stick it to a wall. To carry small amounts I just roll it around a pen or marker that I'd carry anyway. You'll never need more than about 2-4' on a boat inspection.) They also make 'pop-up' panels (like auto windscreen shades), reflective on one side and black on the other. I've had reflectors like this but never a black one. Unless you need a reflector (fill light - not really needed with digital) Personally I'd go with just a piece of black rip-stop.

Looks like a very promising design. Advertised as a 37' boat, though it is really 39' and yet the specs on this video show it as 54.75' boat, which has to be a typo. That bowsprit is no more than 4', if that (though very sturdy looking). The aft swim platform may add another 3' or maybe a meter - if that... So this could be very similar to a Garcia 45'. I like the variable keel design, though it appears the twin rudders have no skeg ... though I am sure that could be a bit tricky - depending on the steering setup - it would seem even the twin rudders are the Achilles heelof this boat. The simple head and separate shower/locker room is a great idea too... and the technical area/pilot birth (maybe - though having to go through he head maybe makes it not a pilot birth. Looks like a very versatile 39' boat!

@@drx1xym154 Very astute observations. I like attention to numbers. The Achilles heel may not be as bad as you think. If you loose a rudder, you always use the other one. Try that if an Orca bites a mono spade rudder off. We have two and can beach our boat standing on them. I also sail on boats with one rudder, and most of the time you would not be able to tell the difference. Unless you try reversing with the board up.

Would add more round corners in interior design, more user-friendly for cases of contact. Also would add some cover or door or hatch to entrance from store room to steering compartment, to avoid any unexpected "visit" of a spare equipment to steering room. Also, one more question - are the hatches/doors of extreme stern lockers, where gas cylinders located, strong enough to meet chasing waves?

Hi Henrik ! The iPad is an option ; a quite practical one if you ask me, as you can control everything from the steering wheel if you wanted to, and also from miles away on your phone (so you could check the mooring, the engine, if someone got in, start up the heating in advance, etc...). But of course you can still have a fully traditional system. Also, with the Power Rail system (the iPad), everything is redundant : you get an emergency re-wire system under the seat of the chart table, and a more traditional electric board with switches at the chart table.

It sure is interesting. I'd like to hear anyone's more experienced opinions on the (apparent) tradeoff of the flat bottom vertical side hull shape and the uncomfortable pounding that comes with that in choppy conditions or the 2 -4 meter seas as found week after week in trade winds. I've found in my limited experience that maintaining a 15 - 25 degree heel reduced the pounding because the angled edge of the hull is entering the water, not the flat bottom (That was a Hanse 505 - terrible pounding). But of course with the heel comes another set of discomforts. So with my slight knowledge, flat bottom and ocean cruiser don't mix well. Or are there aspects of this Ovni's hull design that reduce this issue?

I've been through a F7 sea in 2029 in a Dufour aft steering like all the production, and it was a nightmare. The sprayhood protects quite nothing. Perhaps just a small steering wheel under the hood could do the job, like in the old beneteau Evasion

I suppose it depends on the use case, but for a cruiser, I think you're right that better protection would be better. Alternatively many cruisers actually steer from inside the cabin with autopilot if the weather gets bad enough. If so, the aft helms may simply not get used during bad conditions.

Takes up less space, is mechanically less complicated, and provides better steering using less energy, and I am sure is a lot less expensive to install. Once out of the harbor most people are going to autopilot anyways. Big fan of the hard dodger too with auto pilot steering.

Hi Toby, great to see an Alubat reviewed by YW! I wrote to you many years ago to suggest you review the Cigale 16, you replied positively but wanted to do it when you could do a full look at a wide range of aluminium boats - well, I think more recently you have been including a lot more aluminium which is brilliant - so how about the Cigale next?? How about - Cigale, then OvniCat, then ExploCat - and maybe a dutch alu one to complete the set?! Certainly a piece on the environmental benefits of Alu vs GRP would be super-interesting? Happy Xmas to all at YW, cheers.

Hallo Sven ! If you agree, I'll go ahead in English, as my German is very much conversational and I need to improve my technical vocabulary. As you said, this is the prototype and she needs some improvements,, but there are two versions of interior fittings, meaning the more traditional one would maybe fit your likings if you find this one to have too many corners. As for the different keels, the lifting keel (allowing the ship to safely land on sand and to go cruising in very shallow waters) is a big part of the Ovni range's DNA, so that won't be an option.

Of course OVNI are famous for their somewhat confusing numbering of their boats, this one is in fact 11.95m according to their website, ie over 41 feet overall, waterline length of 11.4m still over 37 feet! It's just how new boats of this type look. Some of these features on this boat they have been doing for longer than Garcia.

Thanks for the video. Would there be a corrosion risk given the steel anchor is in contact w/ the aluminum on the locker? I wonder how Alubat isolates the connection points between the different metal parts (davits, rail posts, etc) and the aluminum hull.

  • @drx1xym154

the "steel" anchor is likely a marine grade stainless ... unless I missed something. Sometimes the OEM will put in an OK anchor depending. At around $300K USD, this is not an inexpensive boat, though she looks tough and well put together. There is likely some corrosion resistance in the aluminum as well - or it could have a strong epoxy coat (several probably) to help with corrosion, though AL is fairly corrosion resistant, I forget how it handles ocean salt/water/weather over time. My guess is a cheap anchor would be galvanized steel, which may not last very long - depending on how often you are on the hook or anchor. Heavy anchors are great - some designs are better and setting or resetting and may handle different terrain better or worse... Good questions. Galvanic corrosion can be a big issue on metal boats!

@@drx1xym154 Aluminum alone won't corrode much, but Aluminum plus any other metal that has different galvanic potential in seawater (including stainless steel) will corrode. However Aluminum boat builders like Alubat have tons of experience working with these materials and should have corrosion protection systems engineered in and a maintenance schedule for it.

@@audible67 I didn't mean the chain plate covers. I meant the furniture. I've sailed several yachts with modernistic interiors, but sharp edges on the furniture where your body contacts is a red flag. I know 3 sailors who have ended up in hospital because of it. For example check the interior of the Jeanneau 45 DS. Looks pretty, but is a widow maker. The galley washbasin is right on the edge of the bench in the 45DS. Every water drip then goes into the drawers below. Modern, but useless. Also the hand holds are good if you are over 6ft, but there are basically none if below, and that includes the companionways. My experience of sharp furniture vs ribs and wrists maybe different to yours. Of course if you don't sail anywhere it probably isn't a factor to worry about. PS. If you don't put a like on my comment, I won't be notified of your response.

@@philgray1023 they discussed the sharp corners of the furniture. That's what we're talking about. I don't care about the chain plates. It's a prototype. The furniture design was probably rushed to get this to show. It's clearly going to be changed. These guys have a pretty clear track record. I've spent a lot of time on some of their older boats and I'm pretty sure they're going to get it dialed. Certainly by now they've been delivering boats that have all of the warts cleaned up. Sorry I'm not going to put a like on your comment because it's completely unworthy of it.
