Ableton for iPad? LK & AUM How To

Музыка

Thanks to the great work of ipadmusic reddit pioneers I have found the closest thing to Ableton on iPad, and that is LK by Imaginando and AUM by Kymatica.
UPDATE 9.12.2020: Imaginando did great work and updated LK so save states with AUM are now matched properly, kudos to the team on a quick fix!
In this video I break down the most exciting new way to make music I've seen in a long time! Includes a full setup walkthrough for using LK as a midi sequencing matrix in AUM, with KB-1 as a midi controller and many different AUV3 sounds.
Shoutout to Jakob Haq, the Sound Test Room, Electronisounds Audio, and many more for their wonderful videos on AUM.

A few years back, I became convinced that using my iPad was the direction I wanted to go for everything, and I was still using Windows on a laptop at the time, mostly for work (CAD, and later, IT-related work I was doing for Microsoft, at the time). Since then, continuing with my love of tablets, I have a Chuwi Ubook tablet running Windows 11 (with my old favorite, Acoustica Mixcraft for music production), and a 7th gen iPad on which I use a number of apps, including Garageband, Cubasis 2, Audio Modeling's SWAM instruments, etc, and, oh yes, AUM, which I'm just beginning to use. I don't have Ableton and have never used it, and, until I saw your video,I had never heard of LK. But, I'm intrigued with the idea of trying it out and, to unlock it completely, $41 + is not a bad price, these days. Only yesterday, I encountered this idea of using AUM as a DAW, which I'm not entirely convinced of yet, but it's starting to make sense. Heck, at some point, I might even get Ableton, to run on the Chuwi Ubook. Where the Chuwi is concerned, I'm planning to get a 20" monitor, connected to the Chuwi via HDMI, which, as clunky and cumbersome as it sounds, is still much cheaper than investing in yet another Windows laptop or desktop, which would take me right back to where I was years ago, and I don't want to go there.

I actually came here via imaginando’s prompt on their video, this was an insert video at the end of their MIDI control vid. On ipad, I struggled for over a year, not short of anything but tech capability on a PC. What was partly the issue was that I refused to ‘give over’ my PC fully to music production. In other words, it seemed that by the time I had installed and routed everything correctly for Cubase 9 to work, my PC no longer worked as it did before, for normal use, which I need it to. The other aspect, related to this, is the surprising lack of youtube content explaining in detail, how to get a music production PC up and running, pragmatically. After a year, and the only thing I had to show was one lousy bass guitar recording, I gave up, and in desperation, went rooting around the much-derided alternative of GarageBand on an iPad. ‘Toy’ was one word used I heard. But I pressed on, I wanted my problems to be music problems not technical ones. And the iPad has in fact about 85% delivered on that aim. I think the epiphany was discovering that iOS plug-ins were of quite a high quality - some of them - and this has blossomed over the three years I have been on the platform. It was possible to record entirely ‘in the box’, then Apple kicked it out of the park, by making ‘drummer’ choices, not just giving a set of drums or even patterns, but enabling a baseline drum pattern and editing/fine-tuning thereafter. I have to credit therefore, Pete Johns with providing the utterly ludicrously basic guidance I needed, to get my tracks to the point they could be released. I then used the only guy’s advice on ‘aggregators’ I could find online, and went with CDBaby. I have my reasons, and it is nothing to do with them being cheapest (the absolute best value aggregator, had some difficult things they did to their users/artists). Pete was just starting out really on the toob, but he had enough vids on iOS iPad GarageBand that I knew I would get there. He went on to release an album recently. I wouldn’t dream of mastering anywhere but the iPad. I used a mouse recently when Apple made that facility available and that was WEIRD. I just like and prefer touchscreen. I have to recommend - your vids obviously - but also imaginando the developer’s vids, because they really do proper detailed, pragmatic sound design, using their own frankly brilliant DRC synth. I have not purchased it yet - because I purchased Moog’s recently and it’s made a dent in the wallet - but theirs is sufficiently different, and they pull you through HOW to do sound design IN THAT SYNTH, which I appreciate. So, a purchase is imminent. Take care, keep well, thanks for the vid.

Great video Dylan. I’ve been through a similar journey with these devices. I’ve owned Ableton from its release but never really finished any tracks with it. Always found a mouse and keyboard not very inspiring. I originally had a mpc 1000xl and a Roland keyboard and made a load of songs but found the sequencer difficult on a tiny screen. The iPad has renewed my passion for music making but it’s still frustrating as I can’t find the do it all daw. I love the simplicity of AUM and I’ve just download LK which is brilliant. It even works with my Novation Launchpad X straight out the box which means I can trigger the clips just like in the launchpad iOS app. I’m also into beatmaker 3 which again is a great daw but has its problems and I’m not sure I like the sequencer. The AUM and LK workflow coupled with the Launchpad hardware is quite a good set up and AUM has a great sound to it. Pity I can’t trigger the file player within LK but maybe I can - just can’t see a way of doing it. I suppose I could jamm within AUM, then record each channel as a file which could be loaded into cubasis to finish the track in a more conventional way. I was also interested in your comments about MPC live - what didn’t you like? I was tempted myself especially with the newer retro colours and built in monitor speakers . I still the think the iPad has better potential and unlike the mpc live it can be renewed with apps and doesn’t go out of date. The mpc live has also loads of ports that I just wouldn’t use. I’d prefer a stripped back version and maybe use the iPad as an audio source for synths etc. Your more recent video sums it up - logic for iPad. Plus I’d like to see both reason and Ableton bring something meaningful to iPad. For me it’s all about the right DAW now for iPad. The money I’ve spent on unused apps and synths (far too many) plus the iPad. I probably could have bought a MacBook and logic and maybe serum or an mpc live and a decent hardware synth. These £15 apps all add up. Especially when they don’t have all the features of their desktop equivalents.

Hi enjoyed your video, I’ve been using LK in AUM as a setup for live performance as well as using AUM to record into Cubasis 3, mixdown then master in Final Touch. On a slightly related question Using Ableton Link in the above live setup what would be the best way to mix multiple iOS devices through to one set of speakers as Alberton shows in their Link videos? Link allows AUM to control the start of LK which helps recording.

Dylan Paris Yes, it’s pretty stable. BM3 has a clip mode too. In both cases you can mix midi and audio tracks, LK is only for midi, I guess you could use something like MultitrackRecorder AUV3 to handle audio in an AUM track and launch audio clips via midi control msgs. AUM is definitely less error prone and has amazing routing. LK reminds of me of Modstep, really powerful but not intuitive at all IMO. LK controlling multitrack (4pockets) would be interesting, don’t know if it’s possible, to cover the whole spectrum of sequencing midi + audio in AUM.

Isn't it exciting how many possibilities there are with iPads and apps. I have suggestions for you to explore. There is no right or wrong. There is just various options for fun. Try running Korg Gadget outside or inside of AUM. Then load some synths In AUM. I recommend Magellan 2, Kauldron, Synthmaster One, and Drum Computer by sugar bytes. Use Gadget as your midi sequencer with instances of the Taipei gadget sending midi out to the synths. You can also use as many instances of gadgets as you need. The sequencer capabilities of Taipei are great. You can assign CC's to knobs in Taipei. The gadgets in general are incredible. I see the excitement in you. Just have fun, because there is a lot of it. Don't rule out things because if you are at all like me you will say this very often: "WOW, I didn't know you can do that! I have to try it." One thing to try is the multi-out ability of several apps. An example is that with Drum Computer, you can send each drum to a different lane in AUM so they can use different audio unit effects on each drum. It's insanely versatile....and, above all....it's fun.

Dylan Paris ditto that. Btw, I was doing precisely that. Tried it again and now it’s working. No ida of what was happening. It kept recording over the played notes. I mentioned on a previous comment it reminded me of Modstep, superb features but a not very clear UI. Feels the same with LK. LK is not ass deep and well eventually figure it out but, for example, the recording procedure is just not clear. Might it be a case where developers are so used to the UI they’re taking things for granted?. I say this in a constructive manner, in no way do I mean to be negative. - “m” we’ve learned stands for “monitor”, it could be “mute” or any number of things. A little, universal speaker icon would feel more at home. - it’s taken me a while to realize that when you open a sequence (piano roll) the top row of controls are for the selected sequence while the bottom are global. Again, it’s not that obvious, it’s confusing to see 2 “plays” that are exactly the same. Plus, unless you select a different sequence they do the same thing. Except the bottom has a “record”... I know it’d break the minimal (and great) design, but a little “sequence controls” and “global controls” label would help... These details might seem minor, but given the amount of choices in apps, feeling lost and frustrated for 10 minutes might be enough to close it and head somewhere else. I gave up on Modstep that way, and was close to doing so with LK. And it’s a shame cos this app is very appropriate to fill a gap in sequencing without a DAW. Thanks to this video I kept going. Make it obvious!. Obvious is good!. Cheers.
