Abercrombie Part 1 - Australian adventure riding

It’s time for another Australian adventure riding trip, and we’re heading into the steepest national park in New South Wales.
Located just over 200 km West of Sydney, Abercrombie National Park stands out with its unique Australian landscape. It may be the 'poor cousin' to the adventure riding capital, the Victorian High Country, but its deep valleys, steep gorges, rolling hills, and dense eucalypt forests offer some of the most breathtaking scenery. Notably, it boasts the steepest incline in the state.
Our campsite selection is a strategic process, often guided by innuendo; the Licking Hole seemed the perfect fit for our venturesome group, inviting us to explore.
Would this be more difficult than our previous rides in Boyd River and Yerrenderie, just east of Abercrombie? One particular spot had me concerned. But there is only so much a map could tell us, so we’d just have to make a call once we got there.
We could either take the northern approach, but instead, we decided to approach from the south, getting the highway section to Mittagong done first before heading down Wombeyan Caves Road across Goodmans Ford to Langs Road.

    About 40 years ago we rode down from the western suburbs to Mittagong to find the Wombeyan Caves Road closed so carried on regardless, turned out the Abercrombie was flooding but a kind farmer took the three bikes across the flooded causeway in the back of his four wheel drive, it got dark soon after we crossed the river and started to rain heavily, we stayed on the Wombeyan Caves Road to the end where it meets the road between Oberon and Goulburn to surprise some mates camping there We found the mates, camped there and next morning Easter Sunday we couldn't go back because of the flood so we rode out through Oberon where we stopped to gas up and met up with a vintage bike club who having attended the vintage races at Bathurst on Easter Saturday were on their way home and generously gave us five of their entry passes to the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, got in watched the three main races and headed home via the Bell's Line same day Wild ride and a top night away Old mate was riding a Honda CB450 the other bloke had a Honda CB750/4 and I was on a Yamaha SR500

    Man, love the old KLR. She looks good, best looking KLR I think. Don't scratch it, and those plastics are hard to get. It's a C model, but what year was it ? 02-03 ? Don't think the Yanks got them. A BMW F800gs, nice. And I see a XT600 or 660 ? What's with the yellow mudguard ? Love the sound of that motor, it purs. Stay out of the rocks and a touch of front brake (one finger) as that is where the weight is & use engine breaking but don't use the rear break too much and stall it. Taken me a bit to relearn after not riding for 30 years. Good share, been almost 60 years since I last visited Jenolan Caves, have to put it on the list when I get down that way.

    Nice...and you didn't get your drone stuck in a tree which a always a win😂😂. The Werong end of Range is definitely getting worse but still very doable. The western side of Goodmans is a bit ordinary too. Probably a lot worse after the recent rain. We got 200mm in 24 hours here yesterday. We came into Abercrombie from the northern end. It was pretty steep down to The Sink but the track was in good nick so no problems. There's a video on youtube of a car who's handbrake failed where you dropped it. Pretty scary seeing they were in front of it checking out the track.

    I took it off to find a rattle and then loved it! I honestly didn't really feel like the wind was any worse and there was no buffering because the wind is hitting you directly.

  • @Woodskin

    @Woodskin

    @@MotoRidesAustralia I've tried a bunch of things to get rid of the buffering. Drives me nuts after a while. It's energy sapping. I've got very good ear plugs that pretty much block all noise, so I can't hear a single thing, but the helmet vibrations are insane. It's like getting slapped in the side of the head 50 times a second. They should wind tunnel test these things before sending them out to production. I'll try without the screen and see what it's like.
