the allelopathic effect of cereal rye is limited to the extent of the root zone of the cereal rye. The other important thing to know is that the allelopathic effect is species dependent. Ie. Same species = problem effect. Different species, generally no problem effect. I have grown squash and cucumbers and cow peas with seeds side by side in the ground.

I wanna use cover crops to make more money and improve soil health.... unfortunately the two don’t go together ...it seems to me it’s not possible unless I use a Haney test... and as far as the Haney test goes and the “trust me it will work” doesn’t work for me.... I’ve been down that trust me it will work road before... also since I rent 95% of the land I farm how can I explain to land owners that I’m not going to be applying fertilizer to their fields anymore and traditional soil testing is wrong... this “Haney” test is what matters now... I know how that would turn out..I’ve experimented with them on a small scale... weed suppression isn’t increased... I’d need to invest in equipment to seed the covers.. and still have weeds going to seed...
