This song described my life 32 years ago, working two jobs as an immigrant who came to the US with nothing, I was working routinely without aim, lived the single life yet still without aim, 5 years later I saw her smiley eyes in a night that changed my life. The very next morning I stood at the window and listened to this beautiful song for the thousand times yet I finally felt what it meant, I listened to my life in a song and I discovered that I am in love with that beautiful girl I saw the night before, fast forward almost 28 years that girl still my wife and I still feel the same feeling that I felt the morning after I saw her the first time. ABBA has impacted my life in the most beautiful way. Today July 2nd, 2023 we celebrate our 29 anniversary and the day after you came continue to be written, love is a gift that I cherish and never take for granted.....

A musical masterpiece. Doesn't matter if you're into heavy metal to Mozart and everything in-between. This is just brilliant. The vocals and the story of a mundane day brought to life in this recording. And the background music. I'm no expert so probably a technical name for it but it's so understated but so brilliant at the same time. Just my opinion but i think this is the best Abba song by a country mile and possibly one of the all time greats. Love to hear your thoughts and if you agree or disagree.

Benny is closest to the classic composers that we had in our lifetime. This song is brilliant due to the mixture of synths, drops and the haunting backvocals of Frida, who sound like a grieving mythological creature. Masterpiece to say at least.

People don't realise it but this is truly one of the greatest masterpieces in modern pop music. No chorus, a double-beat that comes at intervals that feel right but you cannot put your finger on, an extremely mundane story that actually is so powerful from what it doesn't say. The feeling of sadness in the song, a contradiction given the implication it is about finding a new lover. There is so much it leaves you thinking about - just wonderful!

Nonetheless it’s one of their absolute best and it makes you wonder what would have happened if they had decided to stick together for a couple more records. Sadly it was emotionally draining for them to continue, you can feel Agnetha’s pain half across The Visitors 😢

A total iconic masterpiece in music history. This song best describes what ABBA was going through as a group at this time and tells the whole story with just the beat. So sad considering this was their last song ever recorded together. It gives me chills knowing that Agnetha refused to sing this song unless the lights were dimmed in the studio and the air was just right. She even had a certain distance from the microphone during the recording. The fact she left the studio right after her last vocal in this song, not saying a word to anybody, and valuing to never go on stage again is haunting. Just makes this song ever so much more meaningful, beautiful, and powerful with how much heartbreak and talent that was involved in its creation. You can hear her heart through her voice. There is no music that comes close to ABBA. They are one of a kind, never to be duplicated again. Everything they did together was a success. And it still holds true today. I hope they never forget what they did for our industry and how much we love them. We miss you ABBA!

The Day Before You Came" is a song that has always resonated with me, for a long time, as it beautifully captures the monotony of daily life and the profound impact a significant person can have on our lives. The lyrics, written from the perspective of the protagonist, meticulously recount the mundane details of their day-to-day existence, or at least, how it once was, and indeed returned to. This highlights the lack of passion and direction in their life, before the arrival of a special someone. The protagonist explaining their morning routine, such as leaving their house at eight and catching the train. This meticulous description of their daily life emphasizes the sense of obligation and the lack of excitement or spontaneity before the arrival of their lover. As the song progresses, the protagonist describes their workday, lunch break, and the commute back home, illustrating a rigid and predictable routine. The lyrics "I must have kept on dragging through the business of the day, without really knowing anything, I hid a part of me away" suggest a disconnection from their emotions and a sense of being only partially present in their own life, just going by, and by. The music video is also a departure from ABBA's previous work, which often featured the band members dressed in glamorous outfits and upbeat, energetic visuals. In contrast, the video for "The Day Before You Came" features Agnetha Fältskog as the protagonist, dressed in somber attire, riding the train, interacting with her lover, and driving home in the rain. To somber tunes. The individual shots of the band members sitting alone in an empty, theatre-like setting which indeed could before have been used to play a concert in, full of people, and now, empty, further contribute to the overall melancholic atmosphere of the video. As well as the shots of the train going by, and a sense of separation at it's core. In my opinion, "The Day Before You Came" is possibly the greatest love song ever made, or at least one of them. The song's emotional depth & versatility, coupled with its introspective lyrics and poignant tone, showcased ABBA's ability to craft songs that resonated with listeners on multiple levels. The song serves as a powerful reminder of how the arrival of someone special can bring newfound meaning and purpose to one's existence. Moreover, the song is particularly significant as it was the last one recorded by ABBA together before they split. The themes of longing, introspection, and the eventual realization of the impact this person has had on their life could be interpreted as a metaphor for the band's journey, with the members moving on from their time together and returning to their individual lives. When you also realize that they all were couples, it adds a deeper meaning to it as well. This added layer of meaning makes the song even more poignant and powerful, reflecting on both personal relationships and the group's journey as a whole. These different approaches help make it a lot more profound. This is a song that has deeply touched me, and i can listen to it again and again, as it captures the essence of love, longing, and the transformative power of human connection. It stands out not only as one of ABBA's most moving songs but also as one of the greatest love songs ever made. The song's themes and the music video's visual representation of the protagonist's life create a powerful and poignant experience that remains unforgettable. At it's core, the lyrics just describe a normal day most of us can recognize, but when you add the melody to it, it tells you that something more is going on here. This song remains one of ABBA's more less known songs compared to dancing queen, or the winner takes it all, but whereas those were part of their journey, i think the day before you came can be seen as the end.

As with so many people, I found you don't go looking for love, you just one day wake up and find you are in love. The thought that went into this song from people who sang phonetically, and were not totally well versed in the English language. How they captured these thoughts in a foreign language. Genius is all I can say about Abba. When I am in deep thought, I can put on Abba and their music brings me peace, calm and happiness. Silly, I know. Probably no one else feels this way, but the right music can do so much for a person. Thank you Benny, Bjorn, Agnetha, Anni Frid. How can you put value on the decades of style and perfectly matched music and voice?

I read years ago theories about who the "you" is in this song. The one that always stuck with me is that it's simply the band, because it had caused such turmoil and upheaval in her life. Her marriage had ended and the band was breaking up. It makes a lot of sense when you listen to the tone of the song and listen to the hints the guys made about what the song is about, since they have never revealed its full meaning, but they have said that it is not a happy song.

One of the greatest and most affecting storytelling voices in all of pop music. At risk of sounding facile, taking into account clarity, pitch control, and not sacrificing emotivity one iota, she's like a soprano version of Karen Carpenter. Her voice is like a single sunbeam emerging through a thick grey Nordic overcast, making a serenely sad lake gently glisten. Even in upbeat, spicier numbers such as Summer Night City, Dancing Queen, On And On And On and Take A Chance On Me, there's always been a 'sad' and wistful quality to her voice, even when conveying feelings of aspiration, jubilation and hope. I think it's doubtlessly a unique ingredient in the sound, especially when Anna- Frid has to push upwards with a bit more fervor to be more proximal, the magical result is like hot and cold at the same time. The Winner Takes It All and One Of Us, are pristine examples of her delivery drawing on the reservoirs of pure melancholy within us, our regret, and our desperately trying to find grace in defeat whilst looking for the way to claw forward. Yet The Day Before You Came, in my view, is on another level. How her voice carries the weight of the song's mystery like a crushingly sombre Stockholm sky. Somewhere between delicate deliberation and foggy vagueness, she is musing about the everyday mundanity of her life prior to the event of their arrival,- who or whatever it may be,- in a sopranistic sprechstimme almost. Like a twinklingly twee open music box, alone in a field, blissfully unaware of the oncoming tornado. Truly breathing life into a character "living without aim" and in seemingly a perpetual state of comfortable boredom, until whatever ominous thing encroaches upon her life. No emotional bombastics are present aside from sounding mildly exasperated on "...a quarter after nine!", it's just a far more casual, matter of fact soliloquy, recounting her regimented life like a shopping list, but manages to reverse- highlight some cosmic turn of events, like a tiny piece of pottery suggests a gigantic mould. A looming dread is created like Alfred Hitchcock's cinematography, and it's her voice in concert with the eerie synthetic backdrop that does this. She covers all bases, truly an astounding singer.

Your lovely summation of Agnetha's vocal delivery was absolutely spot on! It's just so beautiful, haunting and sad. This song makes me cry every time I hear it. I know it shouldn't, because she's met someone new, and her life might become happier again, but I think it's the Minor key and the bleakness of the video that tugs at my heart strings so much. Benny Andersson is one of the true music geniuses of our time; just sublime! Agnetha's stunning vocals complement his music so beautifully and make this one of the best songs ever recorded imo.

THE best song by Abba by far. A mysterious, haunting lamentation with a travelling, chunky, chugging, elastic bass; Frieda's plaintive, longing, cries; the melancholic burst at the finale and all the time those oddball, synthetic pigeon sounds. LOVE. IT.

The girl could win awards for acting. Such expression, timing and vulnerability. Great directing. The music gets to you deep in the soul. What a perfect song, along with The winner takes it all video and again the acting and directing. Doesn't get much better.

Such an intriguing song. If you saw the lyrics written down, you'd expect the outcome to be quite uplifting and with more tempo, yet the end result is so melancholic. Pure genius.

Yes. This song is a masterpiece as it can be interpreted as the boredom of life, hoping that a new person is just on the horizon, maybe tomorrow. For some people, that person never comes. But live in hope

What an amazing song, I did not realize that it was their last recording together. The haunting drumbeat, it takes you back in the depts of your own ups and downs during your life looking for that elusive love!! Agnetha, the most gorgeous woman ever born on this planet, with the kindest eyes ever, the most mesmerizing smile you want to die for. With an angel-like voice singing every word with the deepest meaning like she does in the songs "when you walk in the room" and "if I ever thought you'd changed your mind" she recorded later!!! Amazing that they still could put this together while they went all 4 through a rather disastrous time, as only true friends can do to be able to play and sing next to each other!! Especially Agnetha who seemed to be the most affected going through their troubles!!! I have the utmost respect for each of them, that they kept their feet on the ground, showing, being wonderful human beings!! Their music is just timeless!!
