Abandoned Retro IMAX Movie Theater Full of NEON Lights

Ойын-сауық

Trust in the Lord with all your heart- Proverbs 3:5
Today I am taking you to a retro 90s movie theater full of beautiful neon lights and stadium seating for IMAX. The theater opened its doors in 1999 and had very good run with business. But as time went on and streaming services have become increasingly popular the fate of many movie theaters will come and that’s the story with this one. Only about year ago this amazing theater closed it doors for good. So join me today and let’s see what’s left.

Looks to only be abandoned for about a year. Starry (which was rebranded and tweaked Sierra Mist) launched in Jan 2023. That is likely why the theater is still in pretty good condition. I hold close my years of working in megaplexes and small theaters in every position including projectionist. I've also watched them close and all the contents ripped out and the place gutted and it still sends chills down my spine and saddens me that these wonders of our youth are slowly going the way of the old Drive In's.

Man I miss being a projectionist. I didn't realize how much I would love the job. They hired me off of the street too. (Usually you have to move up from a floor position first). Starting movies for everyone. Not being bothered by hovering managers and supervisors(although they would randomly walk through to check on you). Using walkie talkies to communicate with employees. The isolation from everyone there was peaceful. Now my job is gone due to technology. Concession stands have turned into mini bars. Movies were better back then. It has all changed for the worse.

Movie theaters are so important to me and how I was raised.. and how so many others grew up and what they experienced. It’s so incredibly disheartening seeing places I and others care so much about just forgotten about. And with this one having all its lights on dust just visible and it being so clean it almost makes it even more sad . Somehow more sad than seeing it destroyed? Its odd. I’ve never been there but I feel every oz of nostalgia

Do you still go to the movies? I know I don’t. I always did when I was young and I also took my kids a lot when they were growing up. But nowadays we have the comforts of our own movie rooms at home and it’s free. Plus our own food is so much less expensive. And the movie theatres just don’t put out good movies anymore. It’s sad, but reality!

I was a protectionis for Edwards in the early 2000s. The reason why some screens were wider is because of the aspect ratio. Some films were in 1.85:1 or 2.39.:1 and many others. IMAX is 1.43:1 to 1.90:1. Looks like they converted to digital projectors. Film projectors had platters. The platter is a film trasport system were you lay the print on. They had an infrastructure of pulleys, so you can thread the film into the projector. Unfortunately, this theater was not an IMAX one. Great video

  • @toxicmoldmedia

I was a projectionist too and i loved the job. The platter system and having to clean the purple residue with like rags that would build up by running the films through. Opening the shutter for the light after the automated preview machine would shut off. Man it was an experience. I Was running 24 theaters at once for some hours. I put the wrong movie on ONCE. It was a hectic schedule and some platters had double films. Got mixed up once in the year i worked there.

The theater I worked at was an IMAX theater, which had 21 screens. I also had to manage 20 screens at once, and it was so stressful. I also threaded the wrong print because of the two different prints on the platters. Thankfully, it was on a different day. Unfortunately, I never got to experience the IMAX side of it. I also loved it, and the only reason why I moved on was because I couldn't pass on a job opportunity, and because of that, it opened up so many more. Those we definitely good times

I think the switch to digital along with the recent pandemic also played a part in the closure of movie theatres in recent years. It's sad to see a lot of theatres, especially big megaplexes like this one, get left abandoned. Unfortunately, there aren't many movies coming out from Hollywood these days that are worth seeing in the theatre in my opinion. I also miss the days when theatres ran their movies on actual 35mm film rather than those high-tech digital video projectors that you would see in most theatres nowadays. I don't think this theatre had an IMAX, unless it was an IMAX retrofit or a "LieMAX" as some people would call it.

  • @TOM-C.

    @TOM-C.

Yeah, I hadn't thought about it until you mentioned it. The largest screen shown in this walkthrough seemed very small to me. Unlike the Cinerama dome, in LA which was huge at 32 feet high and 86 feet wide. IMAX was larger still at 72' x 50', but none of the screens shown in this vlog came anywhere near that size. Must have been advertising jargon to get people in. Never been to an IMAX, but have been to the Cinerama Dome, and it was huge, way larger than the screens shown here. I think you, and others have it pegged, LieMAX!👍😎✌🗽🎄

On of my friends was a manager then ran several theatres for many years. He said by early 2000's all of the major chains had gone bankrupt at least once. Digital was all about cost saving having a better picture was just a side benefit and marketing tool for them. The audio used to frustrate him they started upgrading the audio systems but couldn't really use them. Usually people would bitch so you'd have to turn down the volume and set the EQ where you might as well have a boom box.

Well BigBankz I didn’t know you were gonna be in my hood. If I had known I would have had you over for a good home cooked meal!! This theater closed a yr ago due to bankruptcy! Their prices were ridiculous as compared to other theaters. For those of you wondering why some of the seats so close those seats were almost double the price. They reclined all the way back. Been here like hundreds of times. Only very recently have they boarded up the front windows. Some idiots and low life’s started dumping garbage, old furniture, tires and other junk all around the building. Thank goodness the local county took quick action and hauled it away, hopefully it wont continue to happen. Yes Bankz they often played IMAX. There are still very active business’s attached to this theatre as well as a small strip mall up front. I read Regal was like 10 Billion $$ in debt.

Yeah this place is impressive because most places this old and abandoned tend to maybe have half of this stuff working yet there are still some areas of this building that looks clean and most of the lights still work they could easily restore this place to it's former glory not to mention this also shows how cool going to the movies used to be or just going out in general because now everyone has their face stuck to their phones. It's to bad really but i do think that eventually people will get tired of not going out much and they'll get over their phones to do other things again even if it's not to the same extent.

The larger theater in our town got a big audio upgrade which you could experience for about 1 day my friend that was a manager said. A few people griped so it got set to basically be a waste of money quite a large amount no different from the old one. However after hours you could actually hear the little surround effects and details.

It must be the location and area that killed it. There are IMAX's where I live and they've been going strong for DECADES now. I even think they built a couple of new ones in the past few years. Did you say where this is located? I don't remember. I've never been to one, but I hear they are amazing for watching nature films, space films, and underwater films. You feel like you are there, so I've been told. They must have plans for it, if they keep the lights and ac on.

Ayyyyeeeeee love a good Warren shout-out! If that room at 17:04 is the biggest theater you've been in, then you need to go to an IMAX movie at Moore Warren. So based on the style of fabric in each auditorium in the video, the style of neon, Pepsi products, and the overall architecture, I'm guessing this was a Regal, I absolutely love the look of the late 90s ones. Since you're familiar with the OKC area, the AMC Crossroads 16 at I-35/I-240 was built less than a year earlier and was originally a Regal, and looks very very similar on the inside to this one, right down to the crazy neon and lobby. That location just closed permanently two weeks ago, so if you're from the area you should check it out (maybe give it a few months so that it's more abandoned lol).

Definitely vandalism. This makes me so very sad. My Dad used to fix the old projectors bitd. I miss those times. Always so fun to go with friends. It makes my heart hurt that movies have gone home. 😢😢💔💔

Very nice theater. It is a shame that these areas can't be repurposed. If costs so much to go out to movies any more. It was so much fun to be able to go in a group. It is a shame that so much creeps you out. You need to stop watching horror movies. Your letting it get into your real life. 😁 I think all of this is sad and yet facinating to be here. Thanks for the adventure. Blessings and stay healthy and safe. 😁✨

The last movie I saw in theaters was the 2022 re-release of Avatar. It was crazy, since the entire theater was next to empty! Probably about as empty as an operating theater could be; it was a skeleton crew and almost no customers showed up. I was literally 1 of 3 people in the actual theater room! Got a good deal for Real-D 3D with a large popcorn and soda included! It was actually a pretty cool experience! Before the pandemic, probably the last movie I saw in theaters was IT Part 2.

That theater room, if it was a private theater, would be great for the viewing of a brewers game, the surround sound would have been awesome to listen to the narrative of a baseball game. I would have a field day with that sound system lol.

When things go out of business and the power is very obviously still on I don't feel like that qualifies as abandoned, especially since this one is relatively recent. Closed down, yes but abandoned? 🤔🤔🤔

So many places ARE actually abandoned with utilities on. Not uncommon years ago for companies to lose track of one or two customers after some many years.

You’re not supposed to be able to hear the buzzing of electricity that clearly. If those lights are making that loud of noise, they are on their way to the land of blown ballasts. They could be about to pop and go dark.
