Abandoned Nuclear Bunker War Rooms Reading UK

#readingwarroom #warrooms #abandonedbunker
The abandoned region 6 war room, a nuclear bunker dating from the early days of the cold war, built in 1953, located in the English town of Reading.
A two floor, semi sunk construction, that was designed to protect the regional government from the atomic bomb, allowing them to coordinate defence.
The layout centers around a main map room with control cabins, external offices and accommodation.
Its like walking back in time inside the concrete walls of this bunker, interesting things have been stored inside and left to decay, most remains perfectly preserved.

Thanks Sam and Jess!!! Even though a lot of that information in those store rooms may not be important it should be saved and digitized somehow like for instance maybe those weather records just seems like a waste to have all that information sitting there rotting that may only be in that spot. I could probably spend weeks in that bunker looking through stuff!

Notice the paperwork everywhere says "University of Reading" - it is a university storage shed (the phone has a dial tone because the building is in the middle of the campus) - it hasn't been a nuclear bunker for decades.

Oh so there is a bunker in Reading. I was recently exploring a ww2 air raid shelter in Weybridge, and there was some paper on the ground, looked to be from some sort of dystopian role playing, which mentioned a couple of bunkers in the Reading area. I'm guessing it referred to this one.

When you google this place it tells you exactly where on the campus it is so it's no great secret, it was built in 1953 and decommisioned 1956/57 following a government decision as it was decided it was no longer strong or well built enough (one article suggested it only had one secure blast door which was hollow and could be opened from either side.j) no longer ,fit for purpose, and was later handed over to the university, so no secrecy but nonetheless still an interesting tour

The bit at the end use to be an underground carpark, there was also a subway that joined up to the old Reading Railway station before it was re done, I use to pull trollies of parcels along it from the station to British Rails Western Tower which has now gone. There's also a underground pub/club which I think was linked but I'm not sure if it's still there or filled in.
