The history of Yellow Dog doesn't go quite the way you've described. The small mining village was built in 1911 by the the Pittsburgh Limestone Mining Company. The mines opened in the1890's...most of the homes were built from around 1910 to the 1920's to house the workers. However, in the 1930's there the collapse of the economy that caused the mine to closed down for short periods of time...The mines opened and closed for a few years afterwards until a new mining company took over in 1935 and thrived through WWII until finally ceasing operations in 1952... most of the workers found other work in Worthington PA and the surrounding areas but remained in the village while others moved away. By the 1970's the town started using the underground water source when the springs where they drew water could no longer sustain the town... after tapping into the new water supply the towns people began having sewage and drainage issues and the water wasn't as clean as the spring water and many people got sick. Most of the town's residents left leaving for good while a few remained who had lived there their most of their lived stayed behind...In 2011 the town was pretty much a ghost town...this made it a easy target for local teens from nearby Worthington to come in and start using the houses to party and started vandalizing the empty houses. It was pretty much being destroyed by teenagers running all around the place as they pleased. They are the ones that caused all the damages not caused by natural decay...in 2014 2 people purchased the land with all the houses that remained. It's now privately owned but the new owners have begun some new program to draw in people for summer activities and such. I'm not sure if that ever got started but it is their intent to bring the village back to life by making it a historical site for tourism. So most of those residents weren't foreclosed on (if any). The town just died out on it own. No big mysteries there. Just a small mining village (like many others) that didn't stand the test of time. Sorry so long...but I thought the place had a interesting history when my Sister took me there in 2012 shortly after the town was pretty much abandoned. The homes were in decent shape then, they looked old but not how they look now.

About this Explore: An almost forgotten village remains shattered along hillsides, tucked away in the quiet state of Pennsylvania. Yellow Dog itself was built by the mine company (the mine opened in the 1890's) to house workers, providing them with higher wages and better treatment as long as they promised not to unionize. The company workers accepted this, agreeing with anything the company wanted - hence the name “Yellow Dog” - and so the town was born in the late 1910s and early 1920's (Yellow Dog is a term used to describe a person or thing that is contemptible or cowardly.) After great fruition, mining of limestone came to an abrupt halt between the years 1930-33, due to the Great Depression. It lingered on and off until 1952 before operations were brought to a halt. When the village was originally built the town’s residents would use 4 springs on the hill to supply themselves with water, carrying it to their homes. They used dry sinks, and would handle laundry by using washboards. By the 1970s, as water usage needs changed the villagers tapped into ground water surrounding the areas, which was nowhere near as pure as the former springs, and thus begun sewage issues. The last few remaining residents finally vacated the village in 2011, leaving the entire place an eerie, quiet ghost town. The new owners of the land said they plant to open it to the public as a Historic camp site to stay in and learn about the towns history.

Apparently this entire village was bought in 2014 by Joseph Meyer and Amber Glaslow. The last people to leave left in 2011. Meyer's project will involve opening Yellow Dog Village to the public as a historic camp, where guests will be able to live in the space and learn the history of the mines and the town.

Rots of Ruck on that. You leave the heat off for a couple months with the windows opened or closed you're going to get major decay. Even houses like these built in the 1930's have to have heat in the winter (even a "Warm Morning" heater is good enough with outside doors opening and closing several times a day) and at least windows and fans in PA to stay dry to keep the paint from peeling and mold from forming.

I hope it wasn't heartbreaking for the innocent kids. That's the shit that messes with my head. That one room had so many toys. It was very obvious the child loved Winnie The Pooh. And they were just left. Breaks my heart just thinking about all those kids that were probably terrified of moving and scared for the unknown.

These places are really full of a personal, and close vibes. It's weird, when I was in my 20's, I never stopped and gave too much attention to the big picture of life...to realize how precious and short it is, and to fulfill all of your dreams, etc. If I had, things may have been different, today. And then I see places like this, and wish I could go back to that age with what I know now and change my outlook. It's more than just old, abandoned homes, is abandoned memories, and gives a good, personal outlook on life, and for me anyways...makes me look at things a lot different.

I reckon the horses were just checking you out Robb. Thought you might be an easy touch for a carrot or something. If ever you run into any out in the open with no place to get out of their way, just wave your arms and make yourself look big. They'll go away. I enjoyed the video. Thank you.

Hi There, Rob. To my knowledge, the dream catcher is for catching/capturing bad dreams. Could be why it was left there. That place stirred a bit of sadness and melancholy for what these families lost. A beautiful, lonely piano. Imagine how it brought life to people's days. Loved the shot of the ceiling with the peeling paint. Love seeing things from a perspective I normally wouldn't. They didn't take the toys because they were probably running from a hurricane/flood and wherever they end up, one of the first things donated to children, after food and water is .... you guessed it Toys. You need to saddle up and go for a short, but professional trail ride. They were definitely social horses, use to getting a carrot or other treat from humans. A little brushing they would be so beautified. : ) What? You forgot your horse brush, Rob? Lol kiddin' ya. The big house may have been the Mayor of Yellow Dog? Nice music and Great filming. Explore On! : )

Looks like the houses have asbestos shingle siding. It was popular back in the 1960's. Its advantage is it would hold paint well (wouldn't peel) and not need repainting for much longer periods of time than cedar wood shingles, because it wouldn't absorb moisture.

It really hammers home how worthless our possessions are and how temporary our existence is before we all join the eternal silence. This whole neighbourhood just vanished. What they left behind now rots and will eventually be reclaimed by nature. Makes you really think of the futility of it all.

It is a shame that these houses just sit here to rot. This place has an eerie feel about them. with a silent death creeping in. I do not like the way that all of the toys are left there but they probably took what they needed to get by with. Great find.

I also just wanted to say that I thought the horses coming over to you was pretty cool. Horses like that are pretty friendly, used to people coming and going. They might have thought you had some treats or somethings. That lone chicken at the beginning looked lost ,all by its lonesome. It was trucking around like "Where the Pluck am I? I need to get the flock outta here"... hahaha .

We today arent really interested in the history of places abandoned, i think it is as important today as it has ever been to preserve places like this and not to let it just go in ruins to thugs and teens with nothing better to do than destroy places like this. The history we have lost over the years we will never get it back to the same way it was. Time swallows anything abandoned, before long nature moves in and before you know it there is nothing left of what was. Homes used to be loved and cared for by those families, all the memories left behind for people to see the faces of the fun times they had there. It is an interesting story Anne B, it is such a shame for the amount of homeless people on our streets and the new developements popping up on farm land and all that just disappears. The new generation doesnt care about the property and neither do the new owner apparently. Its heart breaking to see the small towns left with doors wide open paint peeling and broken windows which see to still be a teenagers pass time that never seems to change. I love watching these type of exployers respecting what they are documenting with these old ghost towns and abandoned places and it blows my mind how many abandoned places there are in North America and Europe. History means nothing to a lot of people but there are a few of us that still look at the footage of explorers past and present that give us a sort of update on these abandoned places. Respecting what was there and leaving it just the way they found it. Most modern explorers have a code and they follow it no mater how tempting the items left are to take. I still find it heart wrenching to watch and it make me so sad to see another piece of our history falling a ruined state. Why build not new homes when homes are sitting empty and abandoned and unloved, just like the poor buggers left to live on the streets with no home of their own for what ever reasons . Put these abandonded homes together like a habitat for humanity program and give the homeless a chance to live a life again give them new skills in working on repairing the houses for a work for your house program. it kills two birds with one stone they are taught to do the repairs under guidence councilors and they get the house when they are done to live a new life and have a mortgage and a job will help them get back to living a normal life again. It can be a low income place to rent to own small payments every body wins.
