Abandoned Leisure Centre Forest Glades Kidderminster (Power Still On )

A visit to a former swimming baths local to myself , opened in 1986 by Lady Di .
In the 1980s this was the place to visit for modern swimming with a wave machine this was the best in the area before the crystal Centre opened a bit later on in Stourbridge , completely smashed and stripped but weird the power still on with big lights burning .I would have liked to have made a better job of filming but was a bit rushed and wasn't feeling the best .
filmed using a go pro hero 4 sliver 1080p 30 in PT iso 1600-6400
urbanExploring:- don't break or take .
Music credit :- fragmented records Chris Gray

Blast from the past. I used to go there all the time as a kid. Maybe 12 to 14 years since I was last there. Sad to see it has become this. But thank you for taking the time and risk to film it. Got some great childhood memories of the place.

Wow this is so strange to see the glades all abandoned. I used to come here with my dad as a kid, this evokes a lot of memories. The only real reason for closure was to save money.

I remember the Glades so well! went every Saturday, even showed up on the last day it was open. First time I went was around about 2010, I learned to swim in this place! Seeing this brings all them amazing memories back, I was and still am so devastated they demolished such a happy place to be and have done nothing good with it since. I miss the good old glades, love how it kept its cool 80s character up until the very end too.

The staircase up to the slides used to give me anxiety waiting up there on a busy day because they would never feel safe😂 felt like it was wobbling side to side on occasion🤣 first time I went was in 2013 and last time in 2016 so towards the closure so that’s probably why.

Thanks for posting this vid, I had no idea it had closed much less been removed from existence. Seeing it empty and still like that is nostalgic and melancholy. I have loads of memories of being taken there with my sister in the early to mid 90’s. We’d go every Sunday and then go to the Maccies in town afterwards. It’s a pity it’s gone now.

I grew up in Kiddy, and remember this place being built in 1984-5 and then getting the day off school to see Princess Di open it around Easter '86. It was on Central News! Later it would be a big part of my childhood - walking into town with mates in the early 90s to go swimming there on a Saturday afternoon, and the roller disco (which I believe was still going right until the end and was the place to be during high school, before we were old enough to get into Mirage!) Then later on, renting out the sports hall on a Sunday evening for a kickabout. All these leisure pools are closing now. They were very much an 80s thing and were great for getting kids used to the water, but apparently now people want to pound up and down doing lengths because since the stupid obesity thing got the govt involved, sport isn't meant to be fun anymore, but something to be taken deadly seriously. The glades cost millions to build, was a nice modern building with all the exposed brick (compared to the soulless glass boxes they throw up now) but wasn't even open 30 years. This is the sort of criminal waste that Tory councils love, but Wyre Forest does seem to be amongst the worst for it. As other have said, why not refurb it instead of building a brand new one in a place you have to drive? Why not refurb Crown House as council offices? That's the history of Kiddy from the 1950s on, short sighted decisions and half-arsed plans that line powerful pockets at the expense of the town, it's heritage and facilities. I left 20 years ago and have never regretted it.

It's heart breaking watching this, this was so many our of childhoods :( Used to go every Saturday afternoon then to maccies (where Poundland is now) anyone else? :( Also all the birthday parties that were up in the ballpit area up stairs. Man, miss those days so much! It feels like this was the last part of my childhood and now even that's gone. RIP Kiddy, you'll never be the same.

I wonder whether you were allowed in there because it looks to me like a few people have proven in since it's closed and also the squash court there lol! It almost made me cry. Shame Crystal leisure centre and Dudley are going to be shut down and one built in Lye. No accessible swimming pools with flumes in the West Midlands now. Shame ;(

I've never even heard of this place before your video but I suppose bring from Stoke that's hardly surprising! Fascinating videos of places like this, as far as I'm concerned you're providing a public archiving service! I was sad to hear it's now gone but at least you provide the means to revisit something well loved for the people who knew it when it was a going concern. I hope Water World never ends up like this, our one premier water park and hopefully it won't get wrecked by some money grabbing council types.

It's not just sad, can we have a statement from Wyre Forest Council as to why a perfectly good leisure centre has been allowed to deteriorate like this? Local Authorities are the first to say how tight money is yet they can waste taxpayers money in so many ways. Top marks to the people who have exposed this scandal, thank you for posting it. For me it is particularly sad, as we used to go here with our beautiful daughter, who died many years ago.

Why knock something down just because you can't be bothered to make it better? What's the betting the new 'Glades' will suffer the same fate in a few years time, when all that's wanted is the land its on & how much money can be made from selling it? It was a community resource which could have still served this community in some form or another (with a bit of thought...but who seems to have that amongst planners nowadays?) And don't get me started on Crown House... why move the Council offices out of town when, with some TLC (and consideration for local people) it could be used so well.

*thumbs up* Great job council, the new one really took off didn't it? *sarcastically* What is there to do in Kidderminster as a kid? I'm just curious... before anyone assumes the worst from me, I'm not one of those people, I'm curious to know as a kid, is there any point in getting out of bed in the school holidays now? Town's dead, entertainment opportunities gone, no change, no hope of something fun to take your bored kids for a few hours to somehow lighten up their day. Nope not in Kidderminster, if you want that, you're going to have drive an hour at most to Dudley or Merry Hill where there's tons of stuff to do when previously it was on your doorstep, congratulations council, top notch decision there.

  • @Andyjb6

It's a crying shame that this was closed. It was a fantastic pool for taking kids for a relatively inexpensive trip out, and perfect for toddlers due to it's 'beach effect' which allowed little ones to paddle and get used to the pool. The new pool (Stourport Road) is just a standard swimming pool and caters only to those who wish to swim up and down - nice for them, VERY boring for children. And frankly, there was no need for it - there is at least one gymn in Kidderminster that has a swimming pool to cater for the 'only want to swim lengths' crowd. I tend to ignore the new Kidderminster pool and take my little one to the Crystal in Stourbridge instead.

I didn't realise that the Crystal had been condemned too! What a disgrace; no fun pool in the area to take a child for a little splash. I have very little interest in taking my little one to a bog-standard swimming pool. Anyhow - thanks for the video :)

I'm sorry, but watching clips from when Kidderminster was thriving puts me in a bad way mentally, mainly because ... I just feel so bad for the next generation of children because there's nothing for them to do, everyone bangs on about the new gen will be more ignorant and worse, this is why? Play centres, playgrounds abandoned because of fear of child predators. Parents are scared to take their kids to the park because something might happen to them, it's kinda sad in a way. Also they have to do it because the trust in people is gone. The parents think their kids have things to do, this is one example of that statement being false and they're wondering why they're on social media or browsing on their phones. There is one thing that troubles me is why did it shut? The last I saw of this was, it was being refurbished, but now you're implying it's abandoned... so sad. I went here for a swim in 2007 maybe with my school and quite honestly, it was the best trip I ever went on. Now it's gone *sigh*.
