Abandoned! Fixing up a cheap 4020 John Deere

Ойын-сауық

Fixing some stuff on a 4020 that I traded my 3020 diesel for. I didn’t film it all but it got different frame rails, seat, steering wheel, pump coupler, batteries n boxes, hydraulic control knobs, a tie rod end, all new fluids n filters and probably other stuff I’m forgetting. I used the tractor all last summer and it seems like it’s in good shape overall. It’s I think a ‘65, still has the big injectors anyway.

Ain't nothing cheap about a cheap 4020. At some point I see you'll want to rebuild the steering valve under the dash and if the steering still turns you'll have to pull the steering gear out of the front and replace the piston o rings. These are two really fun projects. There are benefits however to buying one like yours. You have a little bit of a gamble but you can pay a little as you go and hopefully use it in the meantime. Besides, someone has to save them.

You’re right. Probably no such thing as a cheap one. But for what they want these days for the nice ones I’ll take a chance.

You are Correct about in your statement......That steering valve will give a seasoned Deere mechanic The heebie jeebies.....There are very few tractors that can do what a worn out 4020 can still do.....We got a 69 model that single handly handles a complete rebaling operation for going on 5 years.... Probably has been the power source in turning 4x5 rounds into 21 bale bundles worth approx a 1/4 of a million bucks..... GO FIGURE!!!!

Yup. Also someone had cobbled a combine rear axle under the front. Had a rough life.

Thanks. This is old footage, the D was two summers ago already and this was this last summer. Wish it was that nice here in Wisconsin. It’s kinda fun filming stuff but I’m pretty new at it and I should’ve filmed a lot lot of what I did to this tractor. I might do a follow up.

I had no idea it was that easy to change a frame rail. Lots of new parts, good job!

@@rustyoldjunk Awesome. Thanks. That model is a fantastic tractor. Everything was still relatively easy to access and replace or repair.

I’ve baled some with it. The power shift is nice for baling that’s for sure.

That’s the main reason I got it. I traded a nicer 4020 synchro range for it.
