Abandoned digger gets some much needed maintenance- Thanks Supercheap Auto

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

After sitting for 16 years in the forest, the radiator needs a good flush out and the hydraulic oil is past its use by date, so Supercheap Auto and Gulf Western sent me some new fluids to put in the old girl and also some shiny new tools. Thanks guys, you saved me a fortune.

worked on this stuff for many years, the wear on the pins has nothing to do with the hardness and everything to do with the LACK of grease. Go with mild steel pins and proper grease, if you put hard pins in there you will bugger up the bushings as well as the pins. Look after the old girl and she will last years. good luck

  • @randys6698

I’d put automatic greasers on the pins as well. My paw did this on all his equipment, pins lasted seemingly forever. I used to run an old Hough 120 and I’d grease the pins in the morning and they’d be dry by noon. Greased them again and they were dry at the end of the day. My Cat 988 had greasers on it, pins stayed in great shape even after years of work.

@Marty T Just an opinion here, but I would leave mild steel pins in for the pivots. Pins are cheap and easy to change, bushings are more expensive, line boring worn out bores is way more expensive then pins. I know the work is done already, however just something to keep in mind for future endeavors. When a system is designed that will experience wear, it is common to design the system to wear at a central component that is easily repaired. Good work either way.

Maybe add some diesel fuel additive next time you refuel to clean the injectors. Do you run it on red diesel?. In the UK, red diesel is taxed much lower and used in machinery on private land only - tracktors, diggers, generators, etc... Using red diesel in a diesel car or truck/lorry on the public road is very illegal and if you're caught by police you get a big fine.

I don't know if the quality of the stuff they sell today is still the same but the sockets etc don't have one bit of wear on them and this is despite being used all the time. Which is a lot more than I could say for the few over priced items I bought from the sharks in the White and red trucks.

My take on pins and bushings, with wrist pins and rod bushings the wrist pins are very hard and the bushings are a bronze alloy, yet the pin wears and the bushing doesn’t. Any impurities in lubricant embeds itself in the softer of the two materials which is the bushing. The impurities embedded in the bushing then act as an abrasive on the pin hence wearing the pin, albeit hard, faster than the bushing. Take this as you may in regards to the pins and bushings on this machine, most importantly it is best to lube often even if it doesn’t appear to need it to push dirty grease out and replenish with fresh clean grease.
