O how I wish I wasn't allergic to feathers!!! I started at a young age with birds, hence my love for them. I was older when I discovered my allergy was to feathers. It saddens me cause I love them so much. But you are great in taking Popeye and giving her a loving home. It's ha ha funny how your husband loves her back. Best wishes to you.

It wouldn't surprise me if they got it for the cool or novelty factor. My former roommate got a cat because he thought it would be a good talking point flirting with girls. When he moved in with his future wife, he left the cat behind because she was 'allergic. ' I would love to own a cockatoo but I'm in my mid 50s and don't want to adopt something that will outlive me

The cockatoo is an extremely smart bird. But Plz do not buy one unless you want a two year old child for the rest of your life. Hard for you to go on vacation without a sitter. You can not ignore them. They will scream.

You are very lucky to have her in more ways than one! She is a sulphur crested cockatoo. Highly protected species here in their native Australia. They can also be found sometimes further north in Papua new guinea, very rarely though. Beautiful birds. Mate for life and a total joy to see when there is a mob of them hanging out together. Its almost like you can watch the couples all having a chat together!🙂

Not protected enough. The Australian government subsidizing disease ridden animal agriculture is the opposite of protecting vital native biodiversity. As consumers, let's play our part by not demanding such destruction to continue by eliminating dead animal products.

Here in Australia, Victoria these Cockatoos are hanging around in large groups in trees alongside the Murray River, it’s frightening noisy in the late evening, but they are beautiful birds. It is forbidden here to take them out of their natural environment home as pets. In the Dandenong ranges, especially Kallysta picnic ground, where l just photographed them during their evening meal one can observe them along side Parrots, and Kookaburras. They can be very chatty among themselves. It’s a privilege to watch them closely. We are blessed with exotic birds here in the wilderness. To me it is strange to see this Cockatoo in a house, car...but l am glad it was rescued and seems to be happy. Greetings from Melbourne/Brighton, VIC, AUS

What people do not realise is the damage these buggers can do to native flora when in flocks. They can decimate a whole area, and can be aggressive to other birdlife. Not to mention the infernal racket! I certainly advocate for protection, but lets not paint them as these beautiful innocent benign creatures, they are bloody destructive pests as well!

Cockatoos live such a loooooong time. I don't think they should be pets but if they are, you need to plan and prepare for the day you die and they outlive you. And the next generation carer needs to be in their life way before you do die or are too old to care for them properly. Good on this family for taking Popeye on and I hope they have children who know and love him and who will be there for him when his current carers pass. ❤

A classic statement, "When an animal that has loved someone else starts loving you, I can't tell you what joy it has." It took our pooch a few years until he finally warmed up to us. Now he even rubs his face against my hand when he previously moved away whenever we got near him. Now that he trusts us he is so full of love. I felt that same love while watching this video. Thanks!

I had a beautiful cockatoo named George...he lead a life of being kept in a cage without friends or being able to stretch his wings or know human or bird touch...I sat beside his cage for ages talking, sharing cola (in a half oyster shell) & cheezels....because I was & he wanted to do the same...he would groom me by pulling out small hairs on my fingers (ouch) & holding my fingers...a hole was cut in his cage to let him out (with a door replaced) & he followed me around like a puppy....unfortunately, someone opened the cage & took him away....I was heartbroken....I have nothing but complete admiration for Popeye's new family in giving unconditional love to this beautiful cockatoo....Australian cockatoos can live to 120 years...have many Happy family moments...

Thank you for adopting Popeye and giving her a loving, enriched cockatoo life. Cockatoos are super smart and always with their friends…their brain needs petting (grooming bonding) and to be part of everything (safe) and socialising with you. Please make sure you make succession plans, as cockatoos often live to be 100 years in captivity. Hearing of her tragic caged life all alone was absolutely heartbreaking. I have wild cockatoos visit my bird bath and garden every day in small groups. They are so majestic…so curious..so intelligent.

Yellow Crested cocatoos are an Australian species which are protected here. They live in large flocks mostly in the bush (wooded areas). They are very vocal and communal and also mate for life. That's why they are so lonely living as a single bird. It's actually cruel to remove them from their habitat to use them as a commodity, which seems to be happening a lot because I've seen them in many videos as pets in other countries. Thank you for looking after her and creating a loving environment for her. So sad to see these beautiful birds misplaced through greed for profit. To see them together as a flock is wonderful as they are spectacular and very noisy lol. ❤

Cockatoos are too big and too long-lived to be a household pet -- because insufficient room to fly; but a rescue like Popeye is an exception. They demand the same attention as a dog, and for a lot longer.

They live for so long, I hope the cockatoo doesn’t outlive them she’ll be heartbroken again…

Her mom and dad, like most bird parents, have put instructions for her in their will.

I've gotten 3 of the sweetest kitties in the world from Rescue places. The last one we got with his adopted brother in another country when they both were about 6-7 weeks old according to the shelter and he's still hanging on at 22 years & 5+ months old! All he cares about is getting lots of loving (after filling his belly) - all day long and he was feral born.

Popeye was so lucky to have found you and you to have found Popeye as well. We have three adopted dogs and can relate to your experience. I wish people would stop buying dogs from puppy mills and adopt.

People don't realize how much of a commitment it is to adopt one of these birds. They can live up to 70 years so you need someone to take over if you kick it before the bird.

Three of our four birds are rescues. We had two others who went over the Rainbow Bridge. Also rescued, had belonged to someone else. Not always ideal people. We give them the best life we can, and consider what they like and what makes them happy. ♥️♥️♥️♥️ for Popeye!

Yay and God Bless you.we have 7 rescue cockatiels and 2 finches.over the years,5 of them crossed the bridge and sleep under our lychee trees.Everytime one went to Glory;we made sure another unloved one took their place.9 birds and they live on our Lanai aviary.and inside at nite.always!we give all they need.most of them have suffered some type of infirmity or special needs. If we didn't have they probably euthanized.Cant have that!!!!!!each one is so loving and sweet!they DO know when they've been saved.Only wish we could take in more.Aloha
