Abandoned Ames Collins, NY - Exploring With Aces Adventures. Thank you to Anthony for taking me to this small stand alone Ames in Collins, NY. Small store at only 33,000 square feet. Built in the late 70s. Closed in 2002.

I actually helped to set up this store when it was first built. I remember opening day- the lines of people were way out into the parking lot! I want to say it was around 77 or 78.
Ames store chain is another example of a store that should be around today but it is another victim of poor management!!!!

The Hills buyout killed Ames....that was the beginning of the end for them.

And was a victim of K-Mart. Then, K-Mart was backed stabbed by Wel-mart. Now, Wel-mart is struggling too keep up with Amazon. Ahhhhhhh.....The cycle of Life.

@@fristnamelastname5549 Retail and business in general is predatory. The entire country is run as a business, we even have a business man for a president. The issue with that is it's accepted as perfectly normal. It's a so called civilized kill or be killed mentality. We're supposed to be an evolved species. Could have fooled me.
Hey Wallie, It’s cool you came up to this Ames! I remember coming to this location as a kid with my Grandma for skeins of yarn back in the late 80s.. definitely brings back memories.. wish you could’ve gotten in!
Ames Bargains by the bagful.
Up until about 5 years ago, the Ames in my hometown had the original sign still up on the building
This store is now a Big Lots but will always have Ames deep within it's walls. Big Lots actually refurbished and reused the original steel frame from the Ames sign which is pretty cool.
it feels like a ames that is so small it's for just a small neighborhood!
We had a Ames store in Alden New York. It was store 78 it has since been converted into a Save-A-Lot but it still shows the features of an old Ames store inside
You two work well together. Those Ames are classic. It's ashame the company went under. Imagine if either of you could bring that Ames sign home! Another Awesome video
Just watching the video made me think that this building was constructed as a grocery store or some other retail business originally. I know that there were stand-alone Ames (especially older ones), but I was surprised to see comments saying that this always was an Ames.
FYI: There's also a standalone Ames up in Elmira, NY area. I drove by it while deal hunting up that way about 6 months ago.
Great stuff right here. ✌😁
Great find, yet again.. Still catching up on your awesome videos!
What an amazing find! Love that labelscar! And that sign on the road is just magnificent. Good stuff, guys! Tell Anthony I said hi ;)
We need to watch this 15 more times because it’s so close to 10,000 views
Another Ames wow I bet you had fun checking this one out that was a good find
Great Video! Love this site!
And here I thought I was the only one who remembered Ames! I remember that they had great nachos for snacks!
Hell ya Wallie! Keep on grinding these vids
This is an awesome video
Great video Walle
Love, love, love this!!!!! 😀😀😀😀 next in bloopers with Anthony, lol. I was going to ask in Anthony video awhile back, but maybe you would know, if this one is in a kinda rural area? Just with the old houses, narrow ish road, and no graffiti on the side wall in sight!? Simply amazing.😀
So many huge store chains from the past are gone now... And some amazing ones too... All we have left today is Wal-mart... LAME lol The 70's, 80's and 90's were amazing times to grow up and go to all these stores as kids/teens.

Reading their histories, it looks like all of them started off profitable by working in niche areas (cheap real estate, recycled industrial sites, etc), and they all took on debt to expand into places that weren't in their wheel house (or buy other chains going out of business) and went down the tubes when business slowed down.

If Ames stuck to their original plan, witch was to provide discount retail to rural communities and not acquired other companies, they may still be operating today. This store is a great example of how the focus on rural areas was a good idea as there is no other stores nearby to create a competitive retail environment. It’s also why Sears Hometown is largely unaffected by the Kmart/Sears closures.
Man the front of this looks straight out of an apocalypse. Awesome find bud!!!
Love the video
If it wasn't such a trek I'd say to check out the Ames in Baltimore, Maryland. It's been covered by Dan Bell and a couple other KZread channels and Dan was even able to get inside, which wasn't hard since the store was WIDE OPEN. Lotsa mold and mildew in that one though and I think the roof was even getting holes in it.
I’d so buy this and start up a Ames museum.
its amazing these places are still standing after all these years, who would want to lease these old moding bulding
COOL VID...THE BUILDING LOOKS IN BAD SHAPE..UR BLOOPERS PART 1 IS MY FAV
Just checked this place out yesterday, Wallie! I didn't go inside because there were people working outside if the building and I would have gotten in trouble.
Cool :)
Buford's kitchen JUST closed in the moon township plaza last week!!!

mpbirds did it really? Didn't they just open there?
Not that I WOULD, but as a bored kid at the bus stop in high school with the other band kids, I would sit there and figure out everyone's combination locks lol. I learned from years of messing with combination locks how to feel for that lock tumber click lol. Not that I'd ever use that skill for evil or anything 😂😂😂
That has been abandoned for years. The last Ames store closed in 2002, although there were different rounds of closures over the years including a bankruptcy in the 1990s. Ames also went through a phase buying out stores of other chains. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ames_(store)

The other thing is that Ames switched to the green logo in 1990. The red Ames logo was used prior to this so this store possibly could have been abandoned much longer. Perhaps this was one of the ones that was shut down in the 1990 bankruptcy of Ames and not in the 2002?

It shut down in 2002. This was my local Ames. They never renovated.
These stores converted to community colleges and offices near where I grew up (Gettysburg). If they're in an area that has no need for offices, they're probably out of luck. I'm surprised more people don't set up rent-a-booth antique markets in them, though - especially in rural areas where the rent would be cheap. Ames and Jamesway were the stores in Gettysburg. Wal Mart eliminated them once it went in.
We have a lot of abandoned places here Wallie come to WV love to meet you new subscriber here love your videos keep making them ! Love to even explore with u sometime ur very cool and even make me laugh in your videos
I miss Ames/Zayre. Getting ready to lose Kmart too.
Speaking of Ames, I think the one in northern lights might be coming down soon. Not so soon like next week or even next month, but theyre about half way through tearing down the strip of stores that sat to the right as you enter the parking lot. I suspect once that's totally down, the Hills/Ames building will be next.
Yes yes yes yes YYESSSSS YES YESSSSSS
That ames has been shut down for decades, that building has gotta be in rough shape by now. I remember going there when I was a kid.
Please don't slip and die then who would bring us cool abandend videos. (LOL) That is such totally sweet find and that vintage sign in the front of the parking lot is awsome
Looks like the heat is probably on with all the condensation on the inside
collins ny my home town ill tell you the in side is biggg
There's a video by a fellow who likes picking Master Locks that shows how to open one of those, but defeating the lock would still be a cop car ride if you get caught.
Unloading a truck there was probably a thankless job.
I actually contacted the company that owns this building a few months ago and tried to buy the Ames sign but they refused to sell 😕
Was the original sign for Ames red or green and white cause red is the original color for Hills
The combination is 1-2-3-4-5

Not very many abandoned Ames stores left now, are there? Good thing you got this one before the signage and the name scar will soon disappear for good.

There are a bunch of us in the area who are super protective of this Ames and don't want this building torn down. I'm glad that it's being recorded and photos taken :D
A friend who lives in the area told me the Ames sign on the store fell down in 2007 or 2008
