ABANDONED ‘60 El Camino gets new engine , transmission and brakes!

Dad and me are installing the 327ci and 350 turbo that was bought for $400, don’t know the history of the drivetrain. All stock. A few gaskets and seals and were gonna run with it. Also finishing the brakes and rodding a radiator.

Your content is easily worthy of being on PBS stations, same as "This Old House" years back. Seriously, you show what can be done, do it and explain it with plain speaking sans expletives. This El Camino series is terrific but I'm still waiting to see the door replaced on the IHC pickup some farmer pulled off 70+ years ago. Keep going !!

So good to see you putting the 60 El Camino back on the road. My first car bought in about 1982 was a 1960 Chevy Biscayne 4 door post & I still have the car , but its not run in 35 years. In a pinch to repair the radiator in my 60, I used clear silicone & sand on the main vains. It worked several years in front a 283 as well. My 60 was the copper color just like the pic I have on my page.

Great video.I learned a trick on packing bearings. Put the grease and bearing in a Ziploc heavy duty freezer bag and pack it from the outside of the bag. It a is zero mess step. And you just zip the bag shut and the grease can be used again till you need more added.

The way I thought you were gonna do this was just put it together and drive it, but it's old fashioned hard work and knowing how to do it, another friend used to use superblue, an easier to push in and great lube also a great grease pusher is a cone and push through that works great, the radiator trick for cleaning is great, I wonder where he learned it, great watching someone able to do all of this

one of the best old bearing greases was Texaco 'Alemite' grease, it was thick and 'stringy' when you pulled a gob out, once packed it stayed in the bearings better, could pulled some apart packed 7-8 years prior (and after that they were neglected) and the grease and the seals were still good, but still put new seals and grease in them though.

No Tesla, I subscribed!! I have to tell you as an old man it warms my heart to see you and your dad work together. From him alone is a college education but so much better. Hand on experience as it's being done, no OJT. Whether you go on to something else or open up your own shop you'll have the wealth of knowledge from us old timers that grew up with all these cars. I started at 15 bought my first car, I'm 66 now, well over 100 cars, mostly Chevy's BTW and can work on them all except this new CRAP that is controlled by computer and monitored. So for my last car I bought a 68 Chevy Impala, 327 auto with floor shifter I am putting in with a console. I'm rebuilding it old school. I taught my own kids how to do a ton of their own work and still help when needed. Thank your Dad from me. BTW, where in Southern AZ? I live in Tuscon until 1991 when I came back east, I wish I had stayed there. I miss the hot and warm dry air. I'll be uploading some stuff on my impala. I really need a go pro and camera stand.

So…that’s what “rodding out a radiator” looks like! Dad always mentioned it, but I’ve never seen it done ‘til now. I haven’t worked on drum brakes since auto shop class in ‘76; that experience helped persuade me to buy all-wheel disc brake cars when I was young, lol! I can say that the design of the parking brakes in all-disc systems can vary in quality among manufacturers. By the time I grew older and moved back to the land of the double-nickel (the 55 MPH national speed limit of yore), I tried a couple of front-disc/rear drum cars that seemed good enough for me. As I’ve said…I’ve missed working on my own cars after 9 years of having none. Mahalo for yet another great video from you two…and Boo!

I've done many radiator rodding, I saw that while u were soldering the tank u kept heating the solder to drop onto the crevices , next time try heating the tank n then applying the solder, it will fill that gap fast. It's like soldering copper tubing, heat the metal n apply the solder to the metal it will run itself into place . Just a suggestion, u will see how fast it fills. I usually can solder a radiator tank in about 5 mins.

Great series on the el Camino. My first car is a 60 bel air. When I bought it in 1995 it had a similar v8 swap and for years it had a horrible driveline vibration around 55 mph that I couldn’t fix. I eventually figured out when the v8 swap was done the 6 cylinder frame stands ands were left in the car. They cause the v8 to sit about 2” higher and 2” forward that’s why you had to use the modified trans cross member and it makes the motor and trans sit a to much of an angle for the driveshaft. The v8 frame stands will correct the motor placement and you should be able to use the unmodified trans cross member. Unfortunately with the motor sitting in the correct place the hei distributor will not clear the fire wall. I still have the car it currently has 500hp 383 with a tkx 5 speed and it can comfortably cruise at 80

I had a chance to buy a 1960 Chevy Parkwood, the same as an El Camino, just a base model, no chrome or other fancy stuff

After spending all that time and money on the motor, I would go with a new radiator for dependably!

You did put it all back together when you replace the seal on the pinion the same way it came apart? The old copper radiator is worth a little bit and scrap it can offset a decent chunk of that cost of your new aluminum radiator.

is there a rule of thumb when tightening the rear diff pinion nut, with regards to the gear backlash? i could see Rick jiggling it, like he was testing for proper lash.
