It’s so interesting watching western zero waste living. Coming from an Zimbabwean African. Literally this (or most of it) is how people there live. It’s very sustainable and organic and natural. The west could learn a lot from their ways.

You're absolutely right! Even us non rich people over here in the west, or poor people in the west, use up about ten times more energy than people who aren't from the west. Just because using energy for showering, cooking and heating had been so incorporated into our lives! That was so interesting to me.

We are under constant pressure to consume in the USA. In many white collar jobs you are told you must dress and drive a car like your boss, especially if you want a promotion. Then there are all the commercials that inflict FOMO (fear of missing out). Biggest examples are Black Friday sales. Latest example was the fear buying at the beginning of the pandemic and then just last week they tried again saying people were stocking up again because of a second wave of corona, or because there might be civil unrest due to the elections. After 9-11 Pres. Bush told people it was their patriotic duty to go out and spend. When you work two or three jobs to make ends meet anything "convenient" (AKA wrapped in plastic, bad for the Earth and human health) is what you grab for. Many times to do things the Earth friendly way cost so much more because the bad way is subsided. My grandparents went through the Great Depression and lived much more sustainable, but my parents generation went for the "easier" way of life and lost the knowledge and without knowledge you are then forced to depend on that "easy" solution, and are enslaved by the ignorance. Many of the younger generation are trying to learn how to do things better and are even willing to pay a premium price to buy organic or zero waste products. Even after that our litigious society hinders you. Can't let you use your own container to put the deli meat in at a grocery store because if you didn't clean it out properly and you get sick from eating the meat out of it you might sue the grocery store saying it was the meat that was bad and not your washing. I am thankful to those that come from societies like your that share the knowledge of more suitable crops to grow , as well as different habits to create to live better for all concerned.

This is such GOALS! It really is a journey, not the destination. Zero Waste is not as big in the USA (where I'm from) as it is France (where I live now). Living in France has opened my eyes to a new way of living - especially in terms of slow living, eating and living more naturally, and a deeper connection to the Earth. Your films always bring me this same sense of peace and calm @Fairylandcottage. I always look forward to your Sunday film :) If you’re curious, last week I created a peaceful video of the forest in the Alsatian countryside where I live in France. An Indian rural woman uses less resources than an American rural woman who has electric appliances, a TV and computer in every house, air conditioning that they use excessively, and they don't stay in the village but drive 10-60 miles several times a week, and fly to their relatives' house once or twice a year, and buy unncecessary food that has traveled thousands of miles and has excessive packaging. it's possible to live as Fairyland Cottage does, or have your own farm or work on a nearby farm, but inevitably many people don't. Instead they live a suburban consumer lifestyle in a rural area. That's worse than if they just lived in the suburbs. If we're going to feed millions of people, all with a civilized level of electric conveniences, and access to periodic medical services, then we need to recognize the environmental efficiency of having many of them live in cities and towns, at a denser level than a typical suburban house. People in cities use less land per person, have shorter utility cables and pipes, can walk to more of their everyday needs (if the city is designed well), don't have to use wood/kerosene stoves, use shared parks instead of large yards, etc. I've asked Fairyland Cottage how far she drives to the bulk food store, how many times a week she drives for other things, etc. That could possibly negate some of the sustainability benefits of living in a lower-density area. A big yard with your own vegetables and compost is a good thing, but what good things are you trading to get that?

@@sluggo206 I am sure you know the difference between living the rural way and living in a village itself. 1. Cook own food in place of eating out. 2. Buy less. 3. No canned, packed, preserved food. 4.Observe occasional fasting. 5.Daily puja (meditation, gratitude and focuss) ritual. 6.Daily get together for social bonding and improved sense of belongingness. 7.Least use of gadgets. 8.Spending time with family and nature while doing household chores. 9.Walk to local market. These are few Indian rural ways I find healthy and feasible with a little effort even in cities.

@@meenakshiprakash5177 I agree with all those, and thanks for the list. Latin America villages are similar. My concern is, I live in the US where many people say cities are bad and everybody should live in rural areas or suburbs/exurbs/towns and we should decentralize everything. And we have laws preventing cities from being as dense and walkable as Boston or Paris. They believe this is more sustainable, but it doesn't scale to hundreds of millions of people. All that land and per-capita resource use add up. Plus, most people would not follow your list: they would bring their high-consumption lifestyle to the village.

We have been more mindful of what we buy and reuse lately but I agree with you that sometimes you can only do what you can and have to work with your limitations and not feel guilty. We have a pool and enjoy staying home instead of travelling in a car to the beach etc but I have to buy chemicals for the pool and they are not zero waste, I buy some bottled items and I don't need thousands of bottles sitting empty in the cupboard I try to use some but not all. Our local bulk store is closed because of covid 19 so we have no choice right now but to buy packages. That was a truly inspirational video. The longer I travel on this journey the less I need and the happier I become. I could give up a lot more, my books, my piano and music, my weaving and spinning but these activities add a richness to my life and I love doing them. Thank you for these delightful posts every week it is so lovely to see other people on the same journey

Once again, a beautiful video! I was just so surprised it finished so quickly! I also don't make my bed 1st thing in the morning, but I still like to have it done. I'm also in process of using tea instead of coffee and using what grows in our garden as much as possible, instead of going often to the store. At the moment I still have some products to use, but I plan to make my own when they are over. I'm still looking for a good natural sun protection to apply to my babies's skin and also anti-ticks and anti-mosquitos

Inspiring as always Niamh, thank you. I've really reduced all my bathroom products down to simple essentials, and it's all I need. It feels quite liberating! Like you, I always air my bed, and then start my day out in the garden with my dogs for some fresh air before breakfast. I've been enjoying a much slower pace of life during lockdown here in Scotland, so I'm hoping I can keep to it once things start to get back to 'normal'.

This was a lovely video. Very calming. In the past few years we have regrowing many of our vegetable scraps or making soups with them and composting. We save our dish water in a tub to water our outdoor plants and we also save some rain water. We mow high to preserve the moisture in the grass. We flush the toilet only when needed and only bath every other day saving the bath water. We’re trying to use less packaging though we are finding that very difficult in our area. Baby steps but I’m loving getting ideas from you. Thank you so much. 🦋

I look forward to "KZread Sunday" every week with your lovely videos. One practice I've adopted from Ayurveda is abhiyanga, the practice of self oiling. Living in western Canada, this is a lovely way to protect your skin without all the added scents and preservatives in commercial moisturizers. I use sweet almond or avocado oil but will look into more locally grown oils when my current supply runs out. Have a great week!
