A Year of Making Tomatoes

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I have documented a year's worth of tomato growing. I started in the winter of 2020 building a grow wall along one side of our furnace room. This wall consisted of a French cleat system that I hung trays off of. On the top of the tray, I put the tomato starts and on the underside of each tray I put LED grow lights. The tomato seedlings did very well in this setup. I then planted my seedlings in the late spring. In one of my garden boxes, I wanted to try a method of stringing up the tomato plants. This holds the tomato plants upright and allows for more air movement around the plants and easier picking of the tomatoes. This method worked well. I really enjoyed training the tomatoes up the strings. I built the frame to hold the strings out of some small cherry and maple tree trunks that I had cut down earlier in the spring. This saved me having to buy expensive 2x4s. Last year, I had purchased a large pot for making canned products and I was using it for the tomatoes. I had a stirring spatula but it just was not big enough for the size of this new pot. So I thought it would be nice to wood turn a stirring implement for the tomatoes. I started with a piece of driftwood I had found in the spring during our trip to the coast. But after cutting into this piece of wood, I decided it was too sappy and may flavor the tomatoes too much so I moved to a piece of cherry. This worked well. I made a large paddle shaped utensil that I could use for stirring the tomatoes. This first attempt at making a utensil had a very flat end. It worked great as a masher to mash the tomatoes as they cooked, but I thought I could make a better stirring implement. Next, I made a very similar utensil but it had a flatter, slightly wider spoon and a slightly shorter handle. This one works better for stirring. So now I use both one for mashing and one for stirring. Before harvest, I made two tomato boxes which are wood boxes that consist of two solid ends with slats running between the ends. It works very well for carrying and storing the tomatoes. I find these garden grown canned tomatoes taste very, very good and I use them in many recipes from spaghetti to chili to lasagna to pizza sauce. Here's to a fabulous 2022 for everyone.

I follow your channel for a good few years now. And every, I seriously mean every, video you make brings me a piece of joy. Be it for the poetry and originality of your creations, the thinking behind, the process explained, the story you tell around it. I truly enjoy each of your videos. And today, icing on the cake, you drift from woodworking to cooking. And I find myself (very) hungry now. Thank you very much for sharing and I reciprocate your wishes. All the best Frank!

Even if you are using store bought noodles, put them in your lasagna uncooked. There should be enough juice from the sauce to cook the noodles and it will come out closer to what Frank describes. Had no idea this was going to be the story of sprouting tomatoes to make lasagna. Never would have clicked on a video that claimed that, but evidently, it was exactly what I needed to see this Boxing Day. Thanks, Frank!

I always love your video skills, your restored enormous machinery, and your project ideas. But this one I loved for the lasagna ("longest hour of the year"), the canning, and the gardening, but mostly for the well wishes at the end. Came here to say this! Frank, I loved your experiences with each type of raised bed garden and tending to each design. Cucumbers are really good for this as well as Okra! Anyway, I've been experimenting with an elevated platform and 5 gallon buckets for my tomatoes to keep me from kneeling (I can certainly relate) with great success. It makes for a really nice refresh come fall planting season (live in the south) you just dump out the buckets on a tarp and add whatever compost or fertilizer, etc. The buckets last about 5 years before needing replacement.

My father-in-law grew tomatoes well. He used a similar method though with a significant difference. He had collected metal coffee cans. The tall skinny ones. He cut the bottoms out of them. Starting just before Christmas, he placed soil in a large tray and then planted the seeds apart, slightly larger than the diameter of the coffee cans. Once the seedlings were up about the height of the cans, he’d pinch off all the branches, leaving the top leaves. Then he’d placed the coffee cans around the seedlings, and then gentle filled with more soil. The stalks would grow many roots from where the limbs had been removed providing the plant with a lengthy root system. When planting day arrived, he’d make a trench for the seedlings, lay the coffee cans on their sides in the trench, push the entire contents of the coffee cans into the trench, remove more of the limbs from the stalks that had grown since the he’d added soil in the cans, cover with soil in the garden except for the last leave which he would turn them upward to protrude from the soil. The method rendered a horizontal root stem that was about 20” long. Once, after a growing season, I excavated around some of the dying plants to find the extensive root system.

An excellent all-encompassing video Frank! I really enjoyed the mashup of growing your vegetables, making the implements/tools for the garden, and finishing up with a from-scratch meal utilizing the harvested tomatoes. The thought, effort, and time management put into this video is impressive. Keep up the good work!
