Chris as someone with a child thats non-verbal and on the autism spectrum, i expect the ignorant autistic jokes from most of society, but not someone as educated as yourself. Take a second and imagine having a 6 year old that cant communicate in nearly any way whatsoever and hear people joke and wildly misinterpret what being autistic means.

Huge props on wanting to make your kid comfortable to come to you bro. Despite what everyone told me on how I should parent, I also did it this way instead of "cry it out". My daughter is 9 now, you and I are same age but I had her really young and I took it serious for sure. She's a super respectful kid and very close to me, I think those parenting methods you are going to try are awesome.

Refreshing to hear you guys talk about this topic. I was born in 1990 and I feel like, as I was growing up, boys weren't taught to deal with emotions.. we were always told "toughen up" "be a man" etc. And it taught us to push stuff aside to proceed with life and at some point you just overflow with these unknown emotions and it causes a plethora of problems. You're a great role model Cbum, don't ever change bro! Good on you for bringing this topic to the surface, huge praise from me.

This. Can 100% relate. I was diagnosed with C-PTSD a few weeks ago after close to 10 years of struggling with symptoms. I guess I had an above average level of adversity up until this point but I think a big reason it had the effect it had on me was due to the lack of emotional processing and shutting down on everything. We’re social and emotional animals. We’re meant to process, not toughen up, and we’re meant to feel comfortable processing it together (Not be co-dependant, but feel like we have a support system to help us). The toughen up, be a man, boys don’t cry and the whole let them cry through it (emotional neglect) has surely ruined a lot of lives. I caught the effects early on and will recover. Not the same story for everyone else.

I hear you, & I also don't. Men largely are the way we are because of genetics...the vast average difference between how men & women process trauma & the like has far more to do with nature than nurture. Sure, we want our men to feel free to express their "feelings", but I frankly do not want a world full of men who feel like they need to mimic women. Humans make changes with a pendulum approach, so it's always going to swing way past where it "should" end up, & I do think we're currently in a time where the pendulum is on its way too far to the other side....I'm hearing way too much therapy-speak nowadays from men & women...and children. Men, on average, should be more emotionally stoic than women, on average.

Love the take on helping your children manage their emotions. As you become a parent you can really take the things that you felt and harm you’ve seen others experience to mold how you try to do your best to care for them. I think when you have young kids, I’m talking like 3 and under , that they are still learning to understand what they are experiencing. Many times if my little girls throws a tantrum over say not getting candy. She’s not actually mad like I originally thought, she is actually sad beyond her control. Most of the time I can say to her that I love her, and understand that she is super sad and it’s ok to feel that it’s just not ok to kick and scream, usually every time if I ask her if she wants a hug. She like stops right in the middle of going crazy, says yes and then gives me a hug. It’s wild though to like try to understand what they are going through and their age appropriate level. I truly also think this can be done with out turning your kids into soft weak people, I think that’s a negative connotation that comes with understanding your emotions. It doesn’t mean that you won’t hold them accountable and that the way you handle these “tantrums” over time won’t evolve. The more we understand about ourselves and can control our emotions, the better off we all will be together! Props to you gentlemen!

I want my sons to feel like they can talk about their feelings, but I also do not want them to talk about their feelings nearly as much as their sisters do/will. Men need to retain a healthy portion of the grunting stoicism that defines us as well.

It looks like a road sign like "this way leads to this" you know, that's very helpful, it gives me a certainly that wouldn't have alone just experimenting express myself and all

Good stuff! And every child is different. You will figure out what your baby needs and just lean into that. Your next one might be the opposite (like mine were haha) You and Courtney use your intuition and you will do great. Excited for you 🤝

Imagine these two get together and do a podcast together. The set could be Bumstead’s gym and each episode of the podcast they train with someone for 45 minutes and just talk like this. That would be a great podcast. Cheers gents 🍻
