I have been a retail dealer and a wholesaler for almost 20 years . Have made more money selling my cars at auction and to other dealers . The key as you said sell good cars at auction build a good name you will have customers lining up .

Turalay, yes both wholesale dealers and retail dealers can buy or sell in the dealer auctions exactly the same. The difference is retail dealers have the privilege to make more money by selling to the public. As he mentioned "all access pass" is what retail dealers are, that is the highest level besides franchise dealers who even have their own private sales. FYI wholesale and retail dealers can also export to other countries

I bought a black 2011 Jaguar xj, with a blown engine. I paid 1500 it was great condition, except tires were bald showing 167k miles on it. I did nothing but detailed it completely, and sold it for 4500 cash. If i could do that 10 a month id be happy

In Georgia all I drive are my cars under my dealership name with my dealer tags. I drive my personal cars so often to keep those fluids nice and running so they don't feel neglected lol. You're man Craig! I love all the cars you buy.

In Pennsylvania dealers have to put the title in their name then sell it. A good thing for them.they can sell a car with the check engine on to.a retailer. In New York the check engine light has to be off to sell it for retail

One of the best way to make money as a wholesale dealer is buying vehicles from an area that don't sell well in that area like 2 wheel drive trucks in places that get snow and then sell them in places that don't get snow and people don't care that the truck is 2 wheel drive. So you buy a 2 wheel drive truck in say Michigan and then sell it in Florida. I used to know a guy that did this very thing. He would fly up here to Pennsylvania, spend 2 days, buy cars and then ship what he bought here back home to Florida and sell them there.

I've been to a class twice to learn about wholesale car licenses. At least in California, you need a dedicated place of business and of course your city is going to require a business license which means you have to abide by zoning restrictions. You also need dedicated parking at the business for the cars. The class and test is easy. If you already have some business that is zoned for a car dealership you can piggy-back on, it would be easy also. But for the average schmuck, not so much.

Craig, in NH, suppose you had Wholesale only license. You buy a car at auction that your Son, Daughter or an employee wants it. Do you have to sell it to a Dealer and then your child or employee has to buy it from that Dealer? Or, a car your Wife LOVES, and she now claims it as hers. Remember, in this scenario, you are wholesale only.

It would vary by state. However, if you as a wholesale dealer have a car in your inventory that some one from the public ( Family, Friend or Stranger ) wants to buy you could have a retail dealer process the paper work and do the title transfer for a fee. It is a legal way to sell to the public as a wholesale dealer. Some retail dealers I heard of charge between $500 and $800 for that service.

One thing he's correct about all the small dealership's around the Detroit area are low on cars. I asked one of the locals I know and he's taking a hit at auctions trying to get cars .

I am in California probably a lot farther away from you, but this is very informative. I’m looking to get my wholesalers license maybe not too profit right away, but to be able to buy the cars at that price

To get the most car or house for my money I have always bought a car or house with some problems and fixed them. You can get a real good deal that way if you are careful and are not lazy and you have the skills and are willing to learn skills to get a job done.

Michigan requires a wholesale license to have an approved space by the local municipality for zoning. So, there is little difference in obtaining a wholesale vs retail license in Michigan. Smaller used car dealers are dying/out of business due to the lobbying by the large dealers in MI. To hard to get a license due to the "approved" zoning change back in 2006. Its tough to pay for an approved lot and still make a profit.

whole license doesn't have zoning requirements in Michigan, that's retail license. you can run wholesale out your home as long as your license are on the wall to be viewed

This will be getting me to quit my job. But the only thing in my state is i dont want a car lot cause i just do a quick flip .

Very good video BUT I tried this in ohio and the state told me they dont have a wholesale license you still gotta have a retail lot open at least two days a week

I am an auto carrier (three car). I transport mainly new cars and sometimes trade-in ones to auto auctions when work is slow. A lot of those trade-ins are pieces of shits. When I am loading them up on to my trailer I tell myself what makes these cars so attractive to buyers? Lol

Repairing auction bought vehicles isn't always allowed in some States. I follow Randy @ Auto Auction Rebuilds and I think some online troll ratted on him about being a wholesale dealer that was repairing cars bought from auctions and then selling them to another dealer. It turns out that in Oklahoma, wholesale dealers can not do any repairs unless you have some extra "auto rebuilder" license to do that. Sucks for him.

Wisconsin has no reduction in requirements for the wholesale license that I can see. You can’t do it out of your house you have to have a permanent business location with a sign outside and a place to display cars and office space.

Might be worth looking into... John Ross on WatchJRGo channel used an engine cleaning system to restore his Camaro that the dealer wanted to replace the engine. If you could get one of those systems, then you might could bid on bad engine cars and save money on rehab.

The 3.6 V6 John was working on is a problematic engine due to the PVC on the rear (FWD or AWD) or RH side if RWD. Once you flush and while doing the chain set up (replace it all) , be sure to modify the PVC set up and change the oil every 3500-4000 miles max. Use only good synthetic oil and a good filter (Wix, NAPA, Baldwin). The only way those motors will hold up

Hey Craig. What app do you use at the sale to scan VINs for wholesale values and carfax info?

So you mentioned in the video how your father has license and that he buys cars for his collection or buys them to drive temporarily. So with the wholesale license I know you said you can't leisurely drive around with the wholesale dealer plate so how does he do that.

The part he left out about the jeep is that he better have paperwork documenting what the mileage was when he pulled that motor out otherwise he going to take a bath on it as he would have to sell the jeep as tmu( true mileage unknown) which is a title brand and will take money from the vehicle.

I think you should try to start a another car dealer with only like about 2 or 3 used cars then the rest all 2020, 2021, and 2022 cars so you can make a lot more ( profit) money.

Craig @ 11:15 you mentioned you paid 15K for that vehicle that ran rough ,and was smashed up in front. yet you knew the value of a repaired/properly running vehicle would be 20K...that seems risky as that vehicle could easily need major issues....I think you would be most profitable buying econobox cars that need work and paint corrections... throw pads ,rotors,calipers on it at your cost,mark it up on the window sheet for perceived value..have German speed his rotary over it ,and bang...PROFIT

I’ve been wanting to work for myself lately, especially after medically retiring from the Army. I am in WA State, and will look into getting a wholesales license as you’ve mentioned. I’m pretty excited bc I did a lot of heavy equipment mechanics while in service, and think this will be a piece of cake, as far as labor is concerned (or if needed).
