Thanks Nadine, it's good to see my old stomping grounds. I haven't been back there for a few years. It's still a beautiful place. BTW, the saying is "west of the Mississippi" since the Mississippi river is considered the east-west dividing line for the country 😃

Red Lake MN is north of the Mississippi River, and the western edge is a bit west of the Mississippi, so the plaque in MT is probably referencing that.

@@heynadine West of Whitefish is Lake Koocanusa, there's a hwy (37) that runs along it's Eastern shore which is beautiful and curvy, at the northern end is a bridge that connects it to a series of gorgeous paved Forest Service roads. Which is also the tallest and longest bridge in Montana. If you follow NF-92 ( you can do this easily by getting directions from google for Rexford, MT to Yaak MT) it will take you to Yaak, MT which is this ittty bitty town with a bar called the Dirty Shame Saloon. I don't know if they have any vegan options but the burgers are awesome. Following the road through town south, you'll pass Yaak Falls which is a beautiful roadside stop. There's also The Ross Creek Cedars Scenic Area which is along hwy 56 but that's getting a little bit far from the Whitefish Area. Closer to Whitefish is the Montana Vortex and House of Mystery which my family used to go to every summer when we camped out at Flathead Lake. The Danny On Trail is supposed to be really beautiful north of Whitefish on the Ski Resort. There's also the Chinese Wall in the Bob Marshal Wilderness to the SE of Flathead. There's a few tour companies that do tour via horse back because it's quite the hike in to see it. lol this got a bit longer than I intended sorry.

I lived in Whitefish 96-97!!! It's changed a bit, but is basically the same with more people and businesses. I loved living there, mainly for the outdoor pursuits as I was 20 years old and was super into hiking, biking, snow-shoeing and skiing. Lack of diversity (mainly white folks who have never left Flathead Valley in their lives, and the few black families were harassed, sadly) caused me to move back to the west coast and back to university. I have very fond memories, thanks for posting!!!

It makes me sad to hear the black families were harassed. Racism dies hard in the USA, but hopefully it's better in Whitefish now. It reminds me of back in the 1960s here in the UK, we had American airbases nearby, and the guys used to come into town Saturday nights, and they were completely segregated, whites in one pub, and blacks in another, even though they worked together on the bases. I and my friends used to go into the black pubs sometimes and socialise with them so they could maybe see that it doesn't have to be like that, and they loved us for it.

Hello @@breckenridgelong7692, since you're not able to back up your incorrect statement with evidence, I would suggest addressing your confusion by doing some research. I teach equity and social justice and can give you several pages worth of references to explore. Hope you have a great day!

  • @derekcolman

@@breckenridgelong7692 Yes, but we this is not about the criminal element among the black population, but decent families wanting to live the American dream. At that time they were virtually segregated, and even today get discriminated against in small town USA. Back then there was a night club in our city for American servicemen called the American Club, and it was whites only. As young English people, we found it shocking that segregation existed in the USAAF. These guys we drank with were serving their country, and some of them would have served in the Korean war, yet their white fellow servicemen would not socialise with them. I'm not saying there was no racism in the UK but not to the degree it was in the USA. I had a black friend who was married to a London girl, and they moved out of London to the county where I live because of the racism they experienced in London as a mixed race couple. They were actually amazed by the warm reception they got when they moved into a small village compared to the way they were treated in London. All the neighbours came round to their house with welcome gifts.
