Somehow I have managed to backpack since 1967 without giving condensation a second thought. It is less an issue of tent design and material than it is where the dew point lands. Love that tent. Happy hiking to all in 2024.

That's my fault. It has an adjuster which I haven't played with yet. That should reduce the oxygen (I think) and give it a bluer flame. If I'm honest, I think using the Firebox as a gas stove is too fiddly anyway. It only rrally makes sense as a twig stove.

What I found as a teenage backpacker (using low priced kit because a tent is a tent, right...🤔) was that I could actually enjoy camping but my rucksack weight, and bulk, was far more than the equivalent expensive kit that I'd see older, more experienced hikers using. I then started replacing kit with more expensive kit and apart from the obvious weight saving that allowed me to cover more ground with the same effort, I found that the good stuff wasn't unexpectedly failing me whilst out on the hills. Trips became drier, warmer and more comfortable, well worth the money spent! "Buy once, cry once" 😂 yes, I like that analogy! For frying pan duties you can buy oil in a small pump bottle that sprays a mist of oil, very clean to use. Yes, I would have eaten those scrambled eggs! Happy New Year Mat 👍

I was late to the game but definitely followed a similar path. I had some heavy bulky inefficient gear when I started and have refined my set up over the years. It's mainly based around efficiency as much as weight. Trying to avoid carrying things needlessly is a challenge. Thanks for the tip for the oil and thanks again for all the support you've given us this year. Happy new year to you!!!

@@matryderadventures oh yes, kit efficiency is something that I also strive to do, like not bringing a large microfibre towel for example, but instead using the fleece jacket that I'd already be carrying. I'm not so extreme as to pluck every other bristle from my toothbrush, and partially amputating the handle but yes, reducing volume is an ongoing project for me. Another cool video - thank you! Really like that tiny fold-up stove. Glad your tent worked out - for most things it’s true that you get what you pay for, though agree Thermarest is ridiculously expensive these days. Happy New Year - look forward to following your next adventures.

The fear of ticks has destroyed my joy of wild camping. I used to go out all the time, but had some bad experiences with ticks. The worst one was a tent full of them.... The decease they can carry gets more and more normal in my country.

It's always so quiet over there. I love it. I rarely see anyone.

I enjoyed that one. It's always fun to talk about gear. And the AT slideshow was a nice bonus. I did a 75 mile stretch in 2012, meeting a buddy who was thru hiking. Its a hard trail, up and down all day.

I remember it. Incredible place.

I think your Firebox stove air flow collar needs adjusting, when cooking it should be a blue flame, the yellow flame is for wood burning effect. I have a PC Tipi it’s a great material. I went through the titanium thing and for a pot to boil water it’s fine but as a frying pan definitely not. I have found anodised aluminium to be the best compromise between weight and effectiveness. Vern 1 PC is a lovely tent, not really keen on lots of long poles but the V1 looks to be well sorted.

I'll adjust the Firebox collar. Thanks for the tip. I'll also change the titanium frying pan for an aluminium one. Titanium has it's place and frying pans are not it. Cheers 👍

Glad the tent measured up well. The Vern 1 PC will be a good choice for anyone wanting a 1 or 2 day wild basecamp such as in Dartmoor or in Scotland; as the polycotton is much more resistant to UV than nylon or polyester tents which I prefer to use for overnight camps.

I hadn't considered the the UV resistance but that is definitely another good reason for living with the weight penalty. I really love this tent. I'm glad it performed well this time. It was a little damp but my clothes were bone dry which is miraculous really. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍

@@matryderadventuresYears ago i found that polyester and nylon tents were destroyed by UV in one season of 80 or 90 days set up at my old gliding club but when I changed to polycotton the tents the lasted several years. . I am really looking forward to using my Vern 1 PC probably from March onwards. I am retired in my early 70's and I prefer to spent my limited pension on camping when the days get a little longer and warmer.

I've been staring at this tent for ages. The only reason I've not pulled the trigger is because I want to know if a long wide x-therm will fit. 😂 I'm a bit long, you see. Can't use anything smaller...

I know what you mean about liking the nicer stuff. I also find researching gear to be almost as fun as wearing/using it! A lot of the better gear you have is going to last a lifetime so makes sense to splash out a bit! Plus some brands such as Rab have amazing warranties and will even repair their items for you.

Definitely keen on an expensive vs cheap gear comparison for the bike Matt! When I started bikepacking, I tried to do it quite cheaply, but ended up spending quite a bit of money on certain items. I'd love to hear your opinion, especially after your GDMBR experience.

12+ hours in the tent? Think you need to do a pee bottle review 😉 A few drops of cooking oil in the pan before the batter would have stopped it from sticking. And yes if you finshed cooking the pancake, i would have eaten your pancake scramble; need the carbs for the hike out.

Hi Mat, really like your style and philosophy on life or things. Feeling i might start a channel myself to document the GDMBR riders and off grid living, just to share for others. Between the spray foam insulation, all the work, heat wood stove and could plug few other things like the snorkel wood hot tub inside people might enjoy, still have a summer to complete but doing fine in snow, 9,000', below negative temps at night. Thanks for your videos

@@matryderadventures Thanks for encouraging, only issue I have is lousy internet technically things but can learn. Other content would be that school bus if I convert to RV, not sure what I'll do with it tho, technically my property not allowed to have parked here. You may not have met my 120# Akita, he could be content also for those of us that have, getting boy DNA test, he might be part wolf also. Just feel it would be nice to share solid things like self designed solar system for others to pass the torch in a way learning as I did. The first thing tho is GDMBR racers I dot watch and meet, be cool they could always see later, what they were like raw footage on the ride/race! Cheers to a happy new year friend and anyone riding my way pass info along to stop or "warm shower" here.

Your breakfast looks a lot like what the Germans call Kaiserschmarrn (a friendly translation would be scrambled pancake) that people pay money for (with syrup and powdered sugar).

Great night out! I think titanium has it's place for frying, but not pancakes. I think the stove, flame and amount of heat are all important factors for great pancakes and sometimes that is not easy. I don't think there is a perfect light weight pan for cooking every food on every stove, that is why I have three different frying pans. I take whichever one is best for the food I want to cook and for the stove I am cooking on. Your question: would you eat this? Certainly would with some maple syrup! Nothing wrong with some scrabbled pancakes! lol Thanks for sharing! :) :)

Your right. I need more frying pans. I recently went out for a camp with Ross and we took a normal, very inexpensive frying pan which worked perfectly. If I'd have had maple syrup with me I definitely would have eaten them..without syrup, not a chance 🤣🤣

Mat it is cool that you are able to do wild camping. I'm just wondering about how you manage "nature calls" during wild camping. Think many novuce wild campers whould like to know. How to answer nature's call in a comfortable way without spoiling the next camper's experience?

Really enjoyed watching this video mate, I've only just found your channel which is a surprise as I'm always on the look out for new channels to watch, I really like your tent but 3.5kg is abit heavy to carry it up a mountain, I love the concept of this video and completely agree with your comments about other youtubers telling people to just get out with the kit they have, you definitely need a base level of kit, i use the jetboil skillet which is brilliant for the type of cooking you were doing, I've just subscribed aswell mate, I also have a channel with similar content if your looking for something similar to watch, Stay safe, Stu.

I'm surprised by this. Raining during the night, very little air movement between the trees, cold damp air (you can see the moisture in the air from the shot when you open the tent in the morning). I really would have thought that if there was going to be lots of condensation then it would have been under those conditions and less in the situation by the sea where it's wide open for air movement and warmer air. That's weird. Thanks for doing this follow-up video.

You have a good point. I don't think it was as cold this time which may have something to do with it. Also, I only used the mesh door this time which would have helped. I agree that it was still ideal conditions for condensation. This tent confuses me..Thanks for watching. I'll hopefully be out in it again soon.

Lovin' your videos! Glad I found your content. You seem to dig nicer gear, and you appreciate what *works*. Get yourself a Nemo Tensor EC. It is expensive, but it's 3.5" thick, 25x77", and an 8.5R value. It rolls down VERY small, is quite light (insanely light for it's R-value), and it is NOT crinkly when inflated at all. I love my EXPED 7R and do give it a very small edge in comfort, but the EC just blows it's doors off for packability and weight : insulation. It's one investment I would absolutely recommend even if you have to skip on a few other items.

@@matryderadventures pity I didn't know about your travels earlier, I'm in Colorado Springs, not far from your American adventure, particularly through the CO part. I did a lot of mountain biking in TX but weirdly haven't done much at all since I got to CO (a place I'd dream about riding when I was in TX and NM). Oh well, I need to shake the dust off of it and get back at it. If you're ever over the pond again and haunting these regions, know you've got some support/landing pad/cold beer...

I looked up the Firebox stove, and while I generally like nesting options, I can see this being outstanding for trips where I'd want to do some pan cooking. Thoughts on it? Worth the money? I have seen his video. It seems he rates it too. It's absolutely rock solid. It's such an unusual material. It feels damp but must have good breathability considering all of my clothes were bone dry. I was unsure at first but I'm glad I bought it.

Hey just wondering you didn't see any downed UFOs or there Alien occupants as Rendlesham is quite famous for its UFOs and there apparent fascination for the areas Military bases..Please dont be afraid and let us know did you see any little green men when you where out there?

Yeah you might have an good point what with those green men apparently being so advanced and all of that.. but yeah an trail-cam is sure to turn up something of intrest and even if its not creatures not as exotic as those elusive green men from outer space then the wildlife of the place which I'm sure you'd agree have every bit as much of an importance and significance...

It depends where you are really. On this camp I was far from any paths so am certain of not being disturbed. Sometimes being stumbled across is more likely but it's never happened to me. I imagine whoever would be likely to find me probably enjoys the outdoors and understands what and why I'm out there. I definitely did swear! Cheers 👍

@matryderadventures it certainly interesting. I've looked into it over 25 yrs don't no the answer. I suspect a lot 2 do with lighthouse......but definitely NOT in the way some will have u believe

Good gear is great buddy but not everybody has money to spend on high end kit,it's kinda known if you no lol like you won't get a decent pair boots under 250,350 insoles to go in say 45 super feet I like myself then what 2 pair heavy mountain merino socks 70 then gaiters around 80 that's your feet sorted but hell of alot for newbie then your talking over 1000 for different packs if not more alot are new and don't understand yet so it's about getting out there and having good times realy not about how many bathrooms you have I've 3 😂but poop in same one tbh

I agree with a lot of what you say, when you talk about gaiters I assume you are thinking of snowy conditions? As I say in the video the gear considerations for extreme conditions will be different, but for a regular winter hike and camp in the UK I think there are reasonably priced options that one could go with and still have a nice camping setup that should allow them to enjoy their time outdoors, which is what I will be looking into in my next video. As for footwear again it depends on your individual needs, but I walked the Appalachian trail in £80 trail runners, I got through a few pairs over the course of the trail, but even high end expensive hiking boots would need to be resoled or replaced at least once, probably two or three times over that distance.
