A Week with the Fuji xt5 (vs the Sony A7iv)

I have been thinking about making the switch from Sony to Fuji for photo. Instead of impulse buying, I rented the xt5 and put it up against my beloved Sony a7iv. Here are my thoughts on the xt5 and how it compares to my Sony a7iv.

There was host something off about the xt5. I order the Sony a7cii. Now that I have the xt50 I’m starting to feel how you were about the 40MP. It takes away from the Fuji magic.

If you switch to movie mode you can separate the settings for both photo and video, also to get the 1/50 or any ss in between you use the front dial

I really want to thank you for this video. I'm still a learning photographer and do mainly portraits, street and circuit-events (race cars). The fuji sensor performs so close to the sony (when not pixel peeping) even though it's not full frame that i was gonna look past that. What drew me most to the fuji was the vehicle tracking function and the fps (15 on fuji and 10 on the sony.) So it looked great to me to use at the race track. But damn you're the first reviewer talking about the buffer. Imagine if i shot a passing car (average needed 20 shots/car) and then it bricks and i miss the next car. That's a definitve dealbreaker. Thank you so much for your insight and the clear way you share your personal experience rather than just rambling about specs and numbers. Really appreciate it 🙏

For me - I get around using the dials for video by configuring it so you use the top dials for photography and the front and back dials for video. Then you can also have 7 custom settings each for video and photography. If you get your button layout set up properly, it is easy to switch between them.

I’m a hobbyist who shoots with Canon and Leica film cameras, and a Fujifilm X-T5 digital camera. The issues you bring up are great points of contention because it really goes to force Fujifilm to ask itself, who is the X-T5 for? Professionals? If so, what kind of professional? I personally don’t like shooting a bursts like you do because I prefer a slower pace but a camera at this range should be able to adapt to your needs too if it wants to be competitive. My Leica MP-240 is much worse than the X-T5 but again, I prefer a slower workflow so that shortcoming doesn’t affect me as much as someone who prefers to capture as many images as possible. I’m certainly considering the Sony camera you are using because it seems like a fun one to use. Great video!

i've owned many fuji (xt2, xh1, x100f, xt3, xt4, xh2s) cameras and many sony's too (a7s2, a7s3, a73, a7r4) and i fully agree with you. there is a noticable difference between the two in terms of the raw files and how far they can be pushed. Also, like you said, with the AF system. i'm left scratching my head with how some reviewers make videos and act all impressed and rave about how great the fuji AF is and how its just one small step behind sony. Even fuji's latest cameras are to me obviously behind on sony when it comes to AF. and i'm comparing it to my a7r4, a camera that is several years old already. all that being said, i always reach for my fuji cameras. my a7r4 has been collecting dust and i'm probably selling it soon. i just prefer shooting with fuji, frustrating as its Af can be.

The Fuji will remember your settings when switching from photos to videos, but your dials have to be set to T if I remember correctly, which allows you to control that (shutter speed for example) with the wheel on the back. When I had my X-T4, I never used the dials on top, honestly it ended up becoming gimmicky to me and I prefer my A7IV ergos like you. The biggest thing for me though is ease of use. With my XT4, I felt like I had to learn to work around its many limitations especially with AF in video. When I would go on vacation, I’d hand it to my wife and the AF just wouldn’t work great sometimes, videos wouldn’t focus or would hunt, etc. when I shot music videos, I felt like I had to work extra hard to keep things in focus, use focus limiters or just manual focus, etc. if a photo isn’t exposed great with the Fuji, it can be hard or impossible to recover the files sometimes. With the Sony, leave the AF on wide and it will pretty much always focus. My wife had a much better success rate using it without ever even having used it on our last vacation. Touch a person or object and it tracks it flawlessly, photo or video. Photo a little blown out? Shadows too low? It’s amazing to me how much more flexible the Sony files are. All in all both systems are great, but if I only had to have ONE camera, I want the one I can trust most. I would love to get another Fuji though as a B cam for fun, because I do miss it sometimes 😂

Got me the Sony A7R5 few months ago and love it so much. I bought the Sony A7CR the next week as a backup. The Auto Focus on these camera's are Amazing. The raw color is still not great but you have 61 megapixels. Unless Fuji comes out with a fullframe mirrorless thats in a 2500 to 4200 price range. I am sticking with my sonys.

But like you, I miss the 'feeling' of shooting with the Fuji and also the SOOC colors. So now I have the xt100vi and XT5 on order...but still not sure which one to go with. Love both of them!

Excellent review! I have an X-T5 and love it for still shots and playing with the film sims. I absolutely love the retro feel and look; it’s sexy as hell, like you said. It really is a great camera for general photography, BUT,for anything serious and moving at any speed, I use my Canon R6 Mk II. I feel the same way about it that you do about your Sony. The AF on the R62 is unbelievable and is light years ahead of my X-T5 and X100VI. I use the Fujis for more static subjects and they do quite well with that but my R62 is in a different league with regard to AF tracking, accuracy, and speed, as well as low light performance and on top of that, I really like Canon colors as much as I like Fuji colors. I enjoy both systems for different reasons.

Honestly they are kinda useless at times. They just look cool but they present a very slow way of doing photography. I rarely even use them on my x100F. It’s always in aperture priority. A lot of the things I found were never mentioned by other KZreadrs. I’m assuming they were given the cameras or paid to say good things only.

4:50 Why must you change everything? If your exposure settings are ok for photo, they must be ok for video and visa-versa. At least this is what I want from camera, and I hate my Sony for not being able to shoot photo in video mode. Also, about 1/50 - and that's absolutly fine to shoot at 1/60 at 24-25 fps. Mostly my camera is setup for video, so it is in 1/60 all the time. Need to take picture - just take it. Done. I forgot to say - nice video from you! Thank you! P.S. X-T5 is not good for video anyway, as X-t3, X-t4 were.

Depends on how you’re shooting. My photo settings are nothing like my video settings. Shooting 24fps the shutter needs to be at 1/48 or 1/50 to maintain the correct shutter angle. Shooting at 1/60 isn’t ideal.
