A War on Food Waste: Dr. Patrizia La Trecchia at TEDxUSF

Growing up in Italy, food was considered a sacred part of life. Time was invested in growing, selecting, protecting, preparing and savoring food. Yet, Americans waste 40% of their food, and the implications affect our health, our communities, the economy and the environment. Dr. La Trecchia shares her deep connection to food and presents a call to action for a war on food waste.
Dr. LaTrecchia received her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. She is Associate Professor at USF, where she directs the Italian Program. Her research includes film, media, literature, globalization, migration, citizenship, the Italian South, food and identity, culture of food, sustainability of diets and food consumption, and food waste. She is the author of one monograph, two textbooks, and over two dozen peer-reviewed articles. She has served on the board of the Humanities Institute at USF. Beyond the University, she serves the community by volunteering with local arts programs. She sits on the advisory board of the Gasparilla International Film Festival, is a co-founder of "Cinema Italiano" at the Italian Club of Ybor City, and she promotes an annual event on Italian gastronomy. She has been accepted as an associate researcher at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Rome next year.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Very great talk! We as a society has lost the connection with food.. It's really sad to see as more and more pre-packaged "foods" are brought out into the market. (Let's call a spade a spade.. These pre packaged foods are not actually good!) as a health and fitness professional I am shocked to see how many of my clients have lost the ability to feed themselves properly. We are a society if mall-nourished over fed individuals.. And if something is not done soon.. There will be a huge price to pay

This was really a fascinating lecture, something the modern consumerist, capitalistic world must pay attention to....Which obviously does not include america as we all know America is totally evil, due to the fact that they allow their own people to eat at Waffle House or Denny's without fear of the death penalty or lifelong slavery while being forced to listen a non stop tape of Ronald Reagan's simplistic wisecracks...which brings me to make further comments on meLarry"

A simple steak with a salad is cheaper, tastes better and is simple to prepare. Fast food is Americas curse for the planet, just say 'no' to eating garbage like fast food. The alternative is the choice of champions.
