A Walkthrough of Gulfstream’s G600 Touchscreen Symmetry Flight Deck - AIN

The G600 and G500 are a major leap forward for Gulfstream in terms of the flight deck design, while also launching a new family of long-range jets that take advantage of the latest technology. From the active-sidestick fly-by-wire flight controls to the touchscreen-controlled avionics, Gulfstream has leapfrogged its competitors in the technology race and at the same time produced a large modern business jet that is easy and actually fun to fly. One of the neat new features in the G600 and G500 is the touchscreen overhead panel. Where there used to be what seemed like acres of switches and buttons, there are now three touchscreens that are used to control all the aircraft systems. A huge benefit of these new touchscreens is that the pilots can go from dark cockpit to ready for engine start in less than half the time of earlier Gulfstreams like the G550.

    As a Captain on the B787, I thought I was flying one of the more technologically advanced aircraft, but this is a whole new level up. Stunning flightdeck with everything a pilot could ever want. Great explanation on the systems and design philosophy. Hopefully one day I'll to have the opportunity to fly this magnificent aircraft.

    I just recently retired from flying after 47 years , I spent about 26 years in the Gulfstreams, from the GIIB's to the G550.They are sweet flying airplanes a true pilots airplane. Excellent video , makes me wish I hadn't retired.

    I hope not something satisfying about the tactile feedback from switches and buttons. also in support of screens having some redundant systems on on physical switches and buttons make a lot of sense. But this G600 is more Rafale vs Mig -21 - gulfstream II in terms of cockpits.

    They're not going anywhere anytime soon -- These goodies come with a hefty premium, but hands down I'd want my flight deck as operator friendly as possible, and clearly, this is it.

    My dad is a retired TWA Capt. He started out as a 727 Flight Engineer and ended his career as a 757 / 67 Capt. It's amazing how cockpit technology has changed through the years.

    Extremely impressive --- The avionics package, not the comments from people that didn't watch the video. Very intuitive and pilot friendly. Being able to grab the "switch panel" and activate controls like that is unparalleled currently. It's like a checklist that puts the buttons and info next to the step. Combining / auto completing certain tasks is a nice feature. Can't help but laugh at those that'd rather have the old school manual knob to actually have to crank the tuning wheel for something (I could just hear them "I don't want radio presets, I want to have to spin the knob to tune into a station, especially trying to avoid listening to commericals!"). Well done Gulfstream!

    Actually, it's a non-tech feature that I thought was pretty neat: the finger grips that help stabilize the hand while using your thumb to tap the screen !

    I also like the "land-on, lift-off" application off touchscreen menu items. So simplistic and yet so ingenious.

    Nice job, Scott Evans. I hear you had a huge part in the design of this flight deck. My husband was the Program Manager in charge of all the engineers and suppliers that designed the cockpit of this airplane. Very cool, sophisticated and super expensive. 😎

    More touchscreens? Call me old-school, but nothing beats a physical button and switches. It's simple, easy to spot and gives great feedback. The fly by wire joysticks are really cool. Even if it's electronic, it's waaay better than what Airbus has to offer.

    Very interesting video! Most impressive is the software interface, which looks very sophisticated and mature. Kudos to Gulfstream for taking PFD, MFD, etc. beyond even the best we've seen from Garmin. The video is very detailed, although one would need to touch the system before the final verdict is issued. Good job!

    Mr. Evans, and all of Gulfstream: Chapeau! What a Job Well Done! Signed: Retired F16 Pilot and Fighter Weapons Instructor. You build a cockpit around a pilot, just like General Dynamics build the ultimate dogfight machine around the needs of a fighter pilot. I would have loved to fly one. I haven't reviewed any competitor cockpits (yet) but would be highly surprised if they would surpass your Gulfstream 600 flight deck. You build a magnificent ship!

    My only problem with this type of flight deck is how useful are the touch screens in an emergency or high turbulence a menu under another menu. Changing the focus of the pilot or co-pilot to look for a particular menu when the full focus should be on the situation there should be a physical button backup that is illuminated when active would help immensely if such life threatening situations

    Very weird he has to operate the panel on his right with his left hand to have a grip. I tried to operate my smartphone (on navigation app) while driving, it's very difficult, i think i would consider this only with haptic and physical feedback. Too easy to click on something by mistake and not even knowing what it was, exspecially when something is distracting you. I see this is not a normal touchscreen, but I have to try it to understand if it's really that reliable and precise. Honestly, this tecnology is cool and seems very useful for the pilots in standard operations, they can make it easier and less stressful. But there's a number of out of standard situation where all of that can be problematic, yes they can substitute a screen on the fly, but would they be able to do that in an emergency situation? This may fix some issues from the old standard technology and generate others... It seems well tought and they seem to have considered possible issues, but it's very difficult to evaulate the problems and disasters this can prevent and is easy to look only at the new problems it can create.

    @@medeste I suspect he's lefthanded or more likely, for a clear field of view from the camera angle it's the least obstructed using his left hand from the left seat. Also, if you look carefully, the entire perimeter of each of the TCDs can be used as a handhold. the TCDs are like a small pedestal table. I like your thoughts on haptic feedback but he also demonstrated the resistive "slide-off" technique for an inadvertent touch. Interesting approach. Only time will tell what the pilots flying these impressive aircraft have to say.

    @@parimal7528 no it won't in the overhead they can acces all systems trough all 3 displays. So if one fails they can still operate the systems.

    @@parimal7528 why are those needed? I mean each screen can show all the systems. And they are no way all on the same electrical system so they are redundant enough to not have switches. I think you don't really understand what I try to say, all the system pages can be shown on either screen. So even if a screen goes blanc the remaining two can still bring up all the pages for the systems

    Very interesting! As a retired corporate pilot I find this both incredible and scary. Incredible for the advancements in technology and ease of flying, and scary in the what if situation. I’m fully aware of the next to impossible, complete and total loss of electrical power is, including all batteries, but WHAT IF. I admit Ive been retired a few years now and maybe I don’t have all the information on this plane, so please forgive me if I’m not up to date. I would give anything to get some SIDE stick time in this bird. I flew G-2’s and 4’s but this one leaves them in the dirt. Bravo Gulfstream !!!

    Everything we do in our lives envolves a certain type of risk, but you can evaluate those risks and mitigate them to a certain level of safety. In aviation safety you must be aware that nothing is 100% safe, since there is always a situation that you can do nothing about it and you are going to crash. With that in mind, you have to calculate the probability of risks like the one that you have mentioned and if they are at a safety level, for exemple, 1 in 2.000.000 flights, then you can assume that the probability is so low that you can fly this aircraft without hesitation. This equipments must pass through certifications that evaluate this safety level. If this aircraft is certified to fly (and the certification process was made correctly) then we can assume that they have made everything to mitigate this risk and it must likely wont occour, although it can occour, just like it can occour with any other aircraft. If you lose all eletric power including stand by systems and have black screens on a 737 within IMC conditions, you are in trouble. This situation can happens but they have mitigated this risk to a certain acceptable level.

    I don't have to imagine; it happens to me so often with my iPad (EFB) and I'm poking at it with frustration until I get the right approach plate ... hate touch screens, for some reason, they don't like my fingers/touch. I hope they have better technology than what my iPad has.

    Retired airline captain here. I sure wish I was 35 years younger to have that sort of tech at my fingertips. I have to smile at the different ideas in some areas between the G600 and the Falcon 10X. Watching a similar video with the Dessault test pilot, he, at one point said with a "we know better" smile "no overhead touch screen".

    I had the privilege of a factory tour, and a ride in the sim jump seat. Triple redundancy on all major components. I would have no reservations in making my living on that flight deck! Almost all control surfaces provide a place to grip for using the touch surfaces. Pilots were included in the design process and it shows. One can completely reconfigure the instrument panel with the touch of a finger. The pilots have more information available to them at any given moment than any analog layout could ever provide.

    @@luttes72 That feature could probably have saved a couple Airbusses... I bet someone made the engineering decision of not adding servos to the sticks in the 80s, that might ot might not have caused ~500 casualties. Of course they didn't make the mistakes that caused Boeing almost 400 with a design that supposwdly belongs to today...

    And they layer everything behind key presses and menus. If I want to do something in the airplane, especially under stress, I'd really like the control to be right there, physically available and obvious... Information displays nested into menus are fine but system controls are not.

    Even in a jet that's as basic and old as a CRJ, every selection needs to be confirmed by reading how the system reacts: press a button, great! what did it do ? only way to know is to get a message of some sort, that tells the status of what you're interacting with. So physical switches vs touch screen isn't really the debate here.

    @@topethermohenes7658 with ease -- each screen has a grab area unlike traditional switch layouts. Much easier to use a screen to do something than it is to float the arm around a panel possibly hitting things you don't want or need.

    No analog HSI, altimeter and airspeed indicator. Need them just in case IMO. Saved our bacon one day on a C37 when the instruments went haywire due to a pitot static issue and TAT probe issue where the potable water was getting in them on the ground then freezing at altitude.

    How about starting to run through menus in an emergency situation. For example smoke in the cockpit! Seems difficult than having a standard overhead panel switch . The fms touch screens are the only ones that seem beneficial.

    If You go through all aircrafts' Smoke in the cockpit checklists, You will quickly realise there is not much to do under pressure. It's mostly Oxygen masks, goggles, recirc fans and autopilot. It's not a trouble, if you can still aviate ;)

    I loved the idea of overhead touch screens. The interface is designed for it. Unlike the 787 where they simply replicated the physical interface. That’s what phone makers used to do prior to iPhone/Android era.

    I think the design choices are moatly because of commonality. 737 Max became two disasters because of that limitation (not directly of course).

    Thanks for description but I would be more happy if you used your free hand ( Right Hand ) while sitting on the left seat as per airplane design . Just need to see how that stabilization grip works with your right hand.

    Looks cool and probably easy to fly and get used to. A major failure of the electrical system renders airplane inop? Can a software connected joystick cause both to suddenly do abnormal things or not work at all? Can you disconnect one? What if you disconnect the wrong one? I dunno man.

    It’s good that technology is advancing by I’d prefer to actually feel the switches in my hand. As well as technologic failures. A design flaw(correct me if I’m wrong) is that he uses his left hand, which would be on the stick, for the right hand device. The screens should accommodate for the right hand handling the screen also allowing grips.

    I’m not sure how I feel about this. Yea its great leap in aviation tech but I can’t help but reminded of the “self driving” cars and how quickly people were able to hack into them. Maybe I’m being overly paranoid but i would like to hear someone try and explain some of the cyber security elements they would be implementing as the industry moves more towards a tech based evolution

    Gulfstream engines are easy to turn on in this new flight deck. You just move the fuel lever from off to on and then push the auto-start button.

    Touchscreen + turbulence may not be a good combination. Backup buttons and dials (even with the same screen navigation logic) are useful.

    Wow. That is cool. I wonder what Dassault and Bombardier will do in answer. It's getting closer and closer to the time when the pilot is just an observer along for the ride. Eventually there will be full automation and no pilots on board. Hopefully not in my lifetime but it is coming. Crazy. I have not flown anything approaching this kind of avionics. I would love to though. Absolutely. Be safe up there!

    Automation is a long way to go. Everything is about redundancy, redundancy, redundancy in aviation. Even though a plane can fly itself from Take off to Landing to Taxi to Parking, there will definitely still have at least a pilot on board. You don't put over 200 souls on noting but just computers. Aeronautics and Aviation fields have alot of variables, and sometimes, human intervention is still required.

    Those three displays on the overhead basically display the same thing. It's like having multiple monitor on your PC. You can open the same thing on multiple monitor or make them display different menu each. And it's quiet impossible to have all of them freeze at the same time.

    Everything has its own software. In other words each display holds its own software and every box that feeds data to the displays has its own software. The boxes that feed the displays have double, triple or even sometimes quadruple redundancy. So if any of those fail it reverts to the next chain in the redundancy. If the software fails in any display the cockpit will automatically revert. My main point is that an aircraft is not like you home computer, a single failure will cause very little to no interruption in operation.

    This kind of active sidestick is what they need on the Airbus jets. Imagine if the AF447 flight (A330) had this system. Yes theres a cursor showing stick position on the PFD but nothing beats physical tactile feedback. The PNF would have realized what the FO was doing yanking the stick back like that :(

    Great flight deck! :D the only drawback for me is the touchscreen overhead panel. I really prefer the usual overhead panel with buttons and switches

    First, would rather keep the yokes. Next, what happens when both pilots are pulling on the joystick? Who's commands will the computer follow and where is the switch to change that? Comms should have its own dedicated display.

    It's an active sidestick, not passive. There is no thing such as dual input. You'll have to fight to get the control.

    First let me say I am not a pilot so asking this question because I am curious....Most planes being built today seem to be heading the way of "fly by wire" where electricity is sending the commands to the planes to do what you want it to do instead of having the pulleys and cables. How do you fly the plane when you have a complete electrical failure or computer/software crash?

    Gulfstream has explained to us that it has numerous separate backup systems in place in case of any failures. The backups are more than what is required to certify with the FAA. Thanks for watching!

    Fly-by wire has been in most planes since the 70s, this is ancient tech. These systems are usually triple-redundant and independent. I don't think a crash can happen in a dedicated software like this. This is not you average windows app. If one flight computer gives out the wrong results, compared to the other two or three, it's ignored.

    Thanks guys for the answers and I am also one to believe that with the redundancy in aircraft a complete failure should not occur. However a complete failure can occur so my question remains. If any one of the 2 systems(electrical/computer) crash completely can the plane still be controlled or is it just a free fall from whatever altitude the failure occurred?

    Still a confusing of searching through menu in case of emergency or if touch screen goes not responsive and there can be 100 of reasons. No matter, how top glass has been used. No difference really beside having less spaced and looks pretty visualisation.

    Dude, did you need a flight engineer to help you navigate through your cell phone or tablet? I'm sure they would have done a good job organizing the menu. Garmin has a touch screen flight deck as well, you wanna tell me they don't know that they doing either? Slowly but surely all aircraft are gonna be glass touchscreens inn the near future

    Have fun to touch the right menu during turbulences ... Dassault have tested the touch screen concept in 2005 on their Easy cockpit still today the most advance interface Cockpit and give up that option because it’s extremely difficult to work in turbulence to catch the right switches .

    Watch the video again. Turbulence and switch action are well thought out. Touching the wrong button won’t do anything. You’d have to touch it, allow it to bloom and then remove your finger to activate the switch.
