God that takes me back. That section of street where Brassington's is, is where all the buses used to come flying down. The "Turner's" bus stop was by Brassington's, and the PMT stop was at the corner...I used to get my bus to St. Joe's from there.

So sad to see a nice thriving town centre all but deserted. The area shown in first 5 minutes used to be covered in market stalls, now just one plants man. You could hardly walk along along these streets for the crowds. Pedestrianisation has gone too far - no traffic at all might make the streets safer for walking but completely kills access

Back in the 60s, as a young boy, Hanley was my playground most Saturdays. 2d on the bus from Bentilee and you had a whole world of shops and cafes etc. Most of the landmark shops seem to be closed, Webberley's in Percy Street, Sherwin's music shop opposite The Stones outdoor market and , of course ,Lewis's Dept Store with it's Fire and Ice sculpture. If memory serves, The Reginald Mitchell pub is in the old meat market, where my girlfriend's mum used to work. I know that we must have progress, but it is quite sad to see a vibrant town so soulless now.

My God Hanley. If this had been the 1970's you would barely have had room for the camera. This place would have been buzzing. Almost shoulder to shoulder with shoppers especially on Saturdays.
@davidjames30802 жыл бұрын
That's pretty sad to see. Middle of the afternoon and the place is dead. 30 years ago the town would have been buzzing with people. Now it's just locals, on their way to the many betting shops, Vape shops and second hand goods chains like CEX. The council has a lot to answer for in the way they have contributed to this. A serious lack of planning and foresight. The pavements may be nice. But just look at the state of most of the buildings. The shop facades. The ridiculous traffic routes around the town. The high cost or inaccessible parking. No wonder it's deserted.

No need to walk on high street today, as you can buy online and most the time will be cheaper. All those shops which exists before now replaced by Amazon and other major brands. Owner of Amazon, Jeff Bezos is second richest man on the planet. Some of his cash, comes from your city.

Hanley is a building site old unused building coming down replaced by new ones, it has taken a Conservative council to take action where the loved Labour council have left the entire city to fall into ruin. Hopefully in a few years time there will be more places for people to work so they can spend there hard earned money in the city, encouraging firms to invest in Stoke with new shops. The Smithfield development is coming on with the new buildings full of new employers and homes for people. Cant wait for the Etruscan Square, the city has been neglected enough.
