State Street is a pedestrian zone located in downtown Madison, Wisconsin, United States, near the Wisconsin State Capitol. The road proper extends from the west corner of land comprising the Capitol (at the corners of Carroll and Mifflin Streets) westward to Lake Street, adjoining the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison at Library Mall.
The street was a conventional four-lane undivided road until 1974, when a proposal was passed by the City of Madison to turn it into a pedestrian mall. Construction on that project began in late June, 1974, with an initial estimated completion budget of $15 million. This conversion left the street as a two-lane limited-access road, with extra-wide sidewalks created on both sides of the now-narrower street. The east-west road allows only city buses, fire apparatus, police cars, bicycles, delivery vehicles, and pedestrian traffic.
Today, the street hosts a variety of shops, bars, and restaurants and is popular for its small-town appeal, street musicians, jugglers and other types of busking, making it a common tourist attraction. Like high-pedestrian-traffic streets in many cities' downtowns, it also has a noticeable homeless, vagrant, and panhandler population. Places of interest on State Street are the Overture Center for the Arts and the Memorial Library Mall.

miss madison. lived there for 7 years and left in 2014
Was a kid growing up in the 70s in Chicago then we moved to Madison 1980-1984 then moved back to Chicago when I was about to start high school and have lived here ever since. So have not seen Madison in all those many years except for a couple of very brief visits where I did not see much. But I do not remember much of this so either its changed a lot or it is just that it has been SO long and I was in my early teens that I just do not remember anything

I remember they stole the idea from Chicago as far as closing off State Street. Chicago did that to their world famous State street in the Loop back in the 80s

Wow. I lived in Madison in 1972 to 1973. I remember several pubs, lots of head shops and the Freaks. A trip down State Street back then was like, an actual trip! It may be high tech and upscale now, but woah how boring! Where did Madtown go?

Ah yes, I too prefer seeing drunks scammers about through dark neon-lit alleys with loud boisterous music coming from bars; over hotels, cafes, and parks.

Many pro-Biden protesters may love protesting in Madison next month if Trump is successful in stealing back the election. Trump is attempting to have Wisconsin's Republican controlled state legislature appoint Trump electors in a state Biden won the popular vote in. The formal Electoral College vote is December 14.
I really miss Madison I hope that one day I can go back

Tens of thousands of folks could be heading to Madison in mid December, but it won't be for a vacation. It will be to protest Trump's stealing the election via having Wisconsin's Republican controlled state legislature appoint Trump electors, even though Biden won the popular vote there.

I left in 1980. No interest in returning to live there. My gut tells me it probably a politically correct hell hole where every sane thought or truth is a personal attack on some one...no thanks.

...if I ever get back there I’ll do another one. This one is 5 years old now. But, there no longer is a reason to go there anymore. Every one I ever knew there has been long gone for a long time, including all of the professors.

Where the UPS truck is going is less than a mile from exit 4B on the Cross Bronx Expressway. Exit 4B is the Bronx River Parkway.

I may be protesting there next month if Trump illegally takes back the election, via having Wisconsin's Republican controlled state legislature pick Trump electors in a state Biden won by the popular vote. My trip to Madison won't be a vacation. It will be a visit to protest the taking away of our Democracy.

You won't want to move there in mid December 2020 if Trump steals back the Presidency. Because Pro-Biden protesters and Pro-Trump counterprotesters will fill the streets of Madison. Numerous clashes could break out there between pro-Biden and pro-Trump forces. Trump wants Wisconsin's Republican controlled state legislature to pick Trump electors in a state Biden won with the popular vote.
