What would you do when you think no one is watching? What Would You Do? (WWYD?) explores the varying answers with the help of hidden cameras capturing individuals who have been placed within seemingly everyday situation that quickly go ary. The individuals on this hidden camera show are forced to make tough calls when directly faced with situations of racism, violence, hate crimes, and other hot button cultural issues. Catch John Quinones reporting on these individuals as they make split-second decisions to intervene or mind their own business. WWYD? airs Friday nights at 9|8c on ABC.
What Would You Do? (WWYD) is a hidden camera show, hosted by ABC News correspondent John Quinones, in which unknowing bystanders are placed in uncomfortable, and often compromising real world scenarios in public. WWYD’s hidden cameras focus on the average person’s responses and reactions to these issues of social responsibility. Topics such as gay couples being affectionate in public, date rape, racism and racial profiling, interracial couples, abusive parents, drunk driving, and harassment of the homeless are touched upon in this series. What will you do? Would you choose to intervene in these situations? Watch and join the discussion.

She was staying in her lane and helping both sides clearly if she was as evil she would have took the pen back and started talking about him badly not everyone drips in tears from these situations she did ok with whatever emotional regulation she had. not my taste but she didn’t insult him and that’s good enough Calling someone out for not being prepared isn’t a bad thing he could write things down too.

Sadly I think it's a generational thing. Just like older people are often clueless about modern technology (which she also seemed to be, LOL), some are also ignorant and less sensitive about special needs. She might've grown up - or worse, been raised - with the perception that deaf people are somehow mentally challenged. I'm not defending or making excuses for her behavior, but trust me, she's not the only senior out there who would have that reaction. My late father was born left-handed and grew up in the 1940s and, believe it or not, his teachers in school tried to force him to write right-handed ! Why? Because left was considered "evil". INSANE by today's standards, but true. 😫 It gave him ambidextrous ability to a degree, but when he went back to writing fully lefty, his penmanship was degraded. The world was a much more ignorant place only a couple generations ago...

I had a deaf customer who was a regular back when I worked at ALDI. She would use her phone if she ever needed help but it was few and far between (I imagine because she didn’t want to be a “bother”)and it just didn’t sit right with me. I spent months learning extensive sign language both from videos, classes, and people I met through those resources so that I was as conversational in my ASL as I could be. The way her face lit up the day she walked in and I signed a simple “hello” will stay with me forever, it only got better when I started asking about her day and stopped several times to make small talk about groceries and the weather. After that we conversed every time she came in. By far the most useful skill I’ve learned as an adult. Communication should never have such easy to break barriers left untouched.

Agreed, I had a deaf couple that would come in when I worked at panera. The wife got impatient with me at first but the husband calmed her. I ended up being able to communicate via phone typing and as they became regulars I looked up some ASL and learned how to do formal greetings and I was able to learn how to sign “Your usual?” They tipped me $100 one time haha

  • @cav5659

Yeah, and what about the waiter who’s actual job is to take orders? She told the waiter that it’s “not his job” when that’s exactly what a waiter is supposed to do. It doesn’t matter if it’s in the standard, “I tell you and you write it down” form, but even if a deaf person is pointing to a dish then it still is the waiters job to write it down. That old lady got on my nerves saying it’s not his job acting as if it takes up so much time to read the name of a food.

I work at Taco Bell, and when I first started working, there was a man and his wife who were both deaf. I took note that they probably couldn't hear, and did my best to help them get everything they needed. They've returned multiple times after that day, and I was happy to see them everytime. It isn't hard to be considerate. It really isn't.

@@savagejack5714 Humans are known to have voices but alot of time deaf can communicate by mocking what the person is saying, the sound may not be the same as the word but we often try and copy the structure of the sounds with muscle memory when touching vocal cords to feel the vibration to mimic the noise. I myself was born deaf at birth then had several surgeries and 3 ear drum replacement with artificial ones to be able to hear with hearing aids, I grew up 7 years with speech therapist to talk like I do now. Deaf and HOH (hard of hearing) can speak with patience and time, Marlee Matlin, Linda Bove, Nyle DiMarco, Russell Harvard, Millicent Simmonds are most popular deaf actor that can talk and yet are unable to hear. Human body is very amazing and continues to be amazing.

You sound like a really kind person, if the couple found the restraunt's environment, and especially you, comfortable to come again. As the video said, its hard to find a place without discrimination for what you have or what you are. I find that when a person that's unique finds a good place, they feel appreciated and equal. Thank you for making a Taco Bell one of those places. Stay how you are, please.

Had she mentioned that was her job, after the reveal, I would have thought she was a great professor. But as she brought it up the way she did, that's not a good way to communicate with people. I don't think anyone has to tell her why, considering that she's a professor in communication.

As a sign language interpreter if I saw this mistreatment, I would not say anything to the waiter, but I would approach the deaf man and let him know that I know sign language then ask if he needed help ordering his food. If the deaf man signed yes, I would then explain to the waiter that in order to communicate with the deaf man, I would speak for the him when he signed and when the waiter spoke, I would sign everything he said. I would let the both men know that I learned many curse words in sign language. If the deaf man said no, I would have returned to my table and enjoyed my meal. Also, I have had dinner with many deaf friends. They set the scenarios and not me. When it comes time to order, I do not jump in there taking control of everything by asking what they want. I order my food and, my deaf friends order theirs using whatever communication necessary by pointing to the food items on the menu, typing and showing the waiter their texts, or writing them down on paper what they want. ANNNNNND☝️ after we have order their food, I always wait until they start the conversation by first signing to me. I only assist when they ask me. Many Deaf people do not want to be taken care of but only want be treated as a human being and with respect. That is the end of my lesson boys and girls 🐱.

I dont get why everyone is going after her, she's right, he should've came in with a pen or something if it was an actual situation. I do think maybe it was a bit odd she didn't seem to care how rude the waiter was being though. That was uncalled for the way he acted.

That lady isn't horrible. She has a point that the deaf guy should've been prepared for it. She even handed a paper.
