A beautiful and holy place where you can even hear the "Voices of the Angels". It is the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, which overlooks the hill of the Mount of Olives and is also very close to the Garden of Gethsemane.
ARCHIMANDRITE ROMAN KRASOVSKY
Head of Mission of the Russian Church in Jerusalem
"This church was built in the 19th century by the sons of the last Tsarina Alessandra, the wife of Tsar Alexander II, who died in 1880. The following year, her sons visited the head of the mission at that time - Father Antonin Kapustin - who gave them the idea of buying this land and building a church there in honor of their mother, which is what they did".
The church has seven golden domes which reflect the splendour of the Old City of Jerusalem; it houses the mortal remains of the martyr Saint Barbara and the Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna, who dedicated her life to the poor and the sick until she was arrested and killed during the Bolshevik War. The church contains some of the relics of St. Mary Magdalene kept in a special wooden box.
ARCHIMANDRITE ROMAN KRASOVSKY
Head of Mission of the Russian Church in Jerusalem
"Elizabeth converted to the Orthodox religion after the dedication of this church, moved by the ceremony and by the fact that this had happened in Jerusalem. Shortly afterward, she became a Russian Orthodox Christian. After her husband's death, she sold her jewels and other goods, took her vows, and opened the convent of Mary and Martha in Moscow. In 1918, after the Revolution, she was arrested with all the members of the royal family. The next day, Elizabeth and Barbara (whose relics can be found here), as well as other members of the royal family, died in a pit where grenades were thrown. "
The church is visited by countless pilgrims from all over the world, especially from Russia, Romania and American countries. Here, about 40 consecrated nuns serve the Orthodox Liturgy according to the Russian tradition. The mission of the Russian Church serves the people in its entirety and its various institutions are still present in Israel.
ARCHIMANDRITE ROMAN KRASOVSKY
Head of Mission of the Russian Church in Jerusalem
"The Russian Ecclesiastical Mission has been present in Palestine since the mid-nineteenth century to help welcome many thousands of pilgrims from Russia. There are other churches and many kindergartens, hospitals, schools - about 100 schools - within the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission, which serve the Palestinian faithfus."

My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this "calling" in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)

History! I love it. Thank you so much. As a English Jew it is wonderful to see Princess Alice's tomb. The history of the Royal family in England spreads across the world. I know Queen consort Phillip attended the tomb as well as Prince Charles. I hope Prince William will soon

Thank you for this, Zahi! Now I feel as though I have been there myself. What a beautiful place for a Queen who lost her country to find refuge from all the turmoil in her mind. I am sure Prince Philip was so happy to see this happen for her, and also Charles, and also William. I'm sure they are so happy to have a piece of themselves in the Garden of Gethsemane forever.

Wonderul and sensitve views of Jerusalem from the gardens (I really felt the wind and rain), and at one point there was a small, tree-lined garden walkway that needed exploring! The inside of the grotto was deeply moving, one could feel the sacred atmosphere. However - I do wish that the chapel of Prince Philip's mother had a grill fence at the entrance; because I was shocked to see one woman walk inside and take a picture of a wall plaque with her smartphone while standing in front of a flag-draped, marble sarcophagus, and also at her friends who were hesitant at first. Where is the respect? This is a much revered, royal family tomb for goodness sake. Also, are there no funds to restore the painting of Mary before Tiberus, because it is not in a good condition.at all. it. I am sorry to sound so down, but after my great initial enjoyment, I was not happy. It was a real shame, this lovely, rare and precious church clearly needs financial help.

I see other tour guides working, my question to you Zahi is this, why are YOU not working as a tour guide yet? Thank you for this beautiful visit to Mary Magdelaine church (I did some research on Saint Mary of Magdala, she ended up in Greece and lived in a cave for 30+ years, she had a beautiful view, as she aged, she was looked after by sisters, she died in the cave, later her body was removed and now rests in a church in Greece, the cave (Grotto) has been turned into a shrine….when I read her story, it made my heart heavy with sadness because she lived in that cave alone, safe from those who wanted to persecute her, the story goes was that she was fed daily by Angels….But as I read more about her (saint Mary of Magdala) my sadness turned to joy knowing Angels visited her daily and was looked after by sisters later on in her years. I am happy there is a church in honour of her in Jerusalem, someday I hope to visit as many of these shrines where each Disciple taught and died, including where they walked with Jesus, the Holy Land💙

I think the cave is in France in Sainte Baume. It might be the same one you are thinking of. It is one of the places I hope to visit if I am ever in Europe. Mary Magdalene helped me so much when I was going through a very hard time with perimenopausal women's problems. Reading books about her gave me peace through the two years of harsh medication I had to endure. Too much information, but I also share the love of this saint with you.
