A visit to the Friars at Aylesford in Kent

The Friars in Aylesford, Kent. The Priory is home to an order of Carmelite Friars, originally found in 1246. Truly part of Historic England (For more check out our playlist • Historic England )
Will will show you how to get to the Friars in Aylesford by road and by train.
Our visit will start at the Friars duckpond, before leading onto the Great Courtyard, with its beautifully restored Elizabethan buildings and lead you through the Water Gate to the patio next to the River Medway.
We'll pass back through the Great Courtyard to the main shrine at the Friars, respecting those who have come to pray. Next to the shrine is the Gatehouse, leading to the Peace Garden at Aylesford Priory.
We now stroll past the Holy Water fountain, along Rosary way. Here we are lucky to catch the 30-year-old Magnolia tree in full bloom. A little further and we arrive at the tranquil gardens behind the shrine.
We end our visit with a stroll up to the Friars Tearoom and Giftshop set in a 17th-century thatched barn.

it is still just as beautiful as it was when I was there nearly 30 years ago! It is what heaven feels like. Peace overcomes you when walking through the garden.

Dusti, it really does, and very little changes from the outside. It's so peaceful, considering the M20 motorway is about 300 metres from it across the Medway.

@@OurWorldForYou I agree. I've been there twice, and the second time, visiting The Priory was the specific reason I traveled back to England. I went there when I needed a break from life. I found the peace and courage to make the changes I needed to make at that time and The Priory will forever be the place I call home, in England.

I am so pleased that you have visited this astonishingly beautiful Priory, so tranquil, and dare I say, thankfully free of hordes of tourists, who often simply pass it by. It has been my privilege to have spent a little time, in the past with members of this religious order, to have had access to some of the original medieval structure, and to appreciate the sympathetic reconstruction and of the more recent additions. I defy anyone not to be moved by the deep serenity and almost tangible peace that envelopes the mind and body - something increasingly rare these days. Thank you once again, a wonderful video :)

@@OurWorldForYou You are indeed both lucky and fortunate. I have retired to quite a few acres, both spacious and private in New Zealand`s South Island, but it has nothing remotely close to anything like this, just a short walk away ( sigh )

Carmelites are friars, not monks. Monks live in enclosed monasteries. Friars wander! I lived at Ayesford Priory for a while about 50 years ago, helping in the shop there. +

Hi Wendy, I think I only slipped up once, and I think that was because I had the dissolution of the monasteries on my mind. I wonder how much it has changed in 50 years? I guess the heart of it is not too much, but the magnolia has surely grown. Anyway, all the best, Gary & Janis
