A Village Built On A Sandstone Outcrop Mentioned In The Doomsday Book

this video idea came about when i started exploring around the castle and surrounding areas
it was the lamp shop that caught my attention and the fact it hasn't been open as a shop for 20 years one of the locals said.
on looking inside it still had some original features even old school weighing scales.
i did ring the business that owns the shop to ask if i could take a look inside as its an electrical business and i think the guy uses the once shop as storage but the shop window is still dressed as it was back in the day....but there was no answer.
anyway after googling this street it turns out its steeped in history and a website which ill link below tells all about what's what....all history can also be found in that link
joethecockershikes.com/2021/0...
heres a few of my previous mooches around here...well worth a look if in the area
• Exploring Runcorn's Hi...
• We Got Exclusive Acces...
• Is This Halton Castle'...
HAD A FEW AUDIO ISSUES IN THIS VIDEO SO BEAR WITH
if you would like to buy me a coffee the link is below
all money does go back into the channel and on hot drinks....cheers

Runcorn itself is mentioned as a campaign fort of Queen Aethelflaed in the liberation of the North West of Mercia in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle at '917 AD'.

ahh cool one local said the shop hasnt been open for 15 odd years...i did see a frontage opposite that resembled a shop at one point mad the little details this places has to offer

The electrical shop was the Co-op and main food store in the 1950's. You can see the opening where they used to winch in the goods at first floor level at the side The blocked door to the left was the home of Miss Wright and her wool shop which is now flats. The Village Farm House used to have a much bigger garden and was a sizeable house and the sandstone double fronted house before it on the same side was the butcher's shop. The 'school' on the hill through the gates by the vicarage was known as the Hill School was the original village school. It became the church hall and Sunday School when the Church School was established on the common. This is now a house and the current school is behind the small gatehouse towards the end of the High Street.

Omg as soon as I saw the photo, I knew exactly where that was. A really strange place, proper League of Gentlemen. That pub was weird too. Can't believe that shop front hasn't changed.

All of Halton village is a conservation area . So anything not individually listed will still be subject to similar rules regarding changes . Its a brilliant oasis amongst the new town estates. ( Lived in castlefields 1976 , first tenants. Till 1988 moved to ireland. From what I remember from school ( which wasnt a lot ) Runcorn development corporation was very careful to keep anything of historical interest in good condition and integrate it into the new town . Theres a lot to see if you know where to look . Especially on the footpaths as a few of them are the old roads and farm tracks re purposed . Biggest find of course is Norton Priory. It just kept growing ! Great video Guys i been watching some of your earlier stuff .

Does anyone else remember the first/last house...depending which way you are walking lol, on the row set back from the older houses, that for years was boarded up and had 'satanic' symbols painted on it? Lots of rumours but nothing definite, last time i saw it it was occupied.
