The Gibson Goddess series was initially marketed towards women whereas they came out with the "GT" series for the guys. The goddess offered thinner nut widths and neck profiles with simplified controls and GORGEOUS finishes. The SGs are a bit less special than the Les Pauls in my opinion, but still certainly cool with their complimentary bobbin wire colors

Of all the models I designed for Gibson, the Goddess may be the most I am proud of. I had to fight quite a bit internally of keep this a FEMALE specific model. I really wanted to make something for the ladies and this was the first Electric Gibson model made specifically for them. We also did a Vixen series at the time , but they were less expansive and were more of a design idea from Yamano, the Japan distributor at the time. BTW, the bodies were NOT shrunken, however I did use the Angus style narrower neck width. I simplified the controls and bridge based on the overwhelming feedback from female players who are less infatuated with knobs, switches and hardware options. They were clear, they just want to play, not tweak. BTW: I also designed the GT series and in no way was I thinking "This is for the Guys". The Genesis of the GT series was that I wanted to include all of the HOT Rod after market mods that many people were doing at the time.

I should add; This model was supposed to include the Planet Waves locking/Auto trim tuners, but I had to work out a compromise with the crew in Final assembly. They didnt like those tuners. Also, it was Franks Johns's idea to use the clear bobbin pickups with mathching color wire (the protoypes had Chrome covered humbuckers)....AND it was the Supervisor in the paint department that came up with the idea of coloring the headstock logo the same color as the body. That was a cool thing about the Gibson team, we knew that a good idea could come from anyone. They were fun times, no doubt.

You must mean the narrow neck width on Angus's original SG that he pretty much used exclusively up until "Back in Black?" For some reason it sounds even more narrow than a standard SG which probably fits his small hand perfectly. I love the SG look and sound, but at 5'11" and 190 lbs they feel like a toy to me. I prefer the heavier LP's
@KphilbinNashville

When I said "the Angus nut width" I was talking about the neck we used on his signature SG that we were making at the time.

Hi, im now really looking out for this exact guitar, but can you make me sure about the infos I found on internet? It sais they were produced 100 in each colour. Is it true?
@KphilbinNashville

@@barnabasbogacs803 That is not true. The Goddess was NOT a Limited edition but it was discontinued by the end of the year after its introduction.
As a very non-Goddess looking guy with a full beard, I would love to own one of those guitars. Just a pity they didn't go for a full gloss finish, as it would have kept it's look and feel better over the years. Just dig those colour wound pickups and simple is good for the likes of me - we don't need no fancy pants push pull knobs and twin volume/tone pots round here lol. Also, 6lbs in weight sounds amazing for a long live set (although SGs are usually not too heavy anyway). Hmmm... can I get away with buying another guitar and sneaking it into the house??? Plotting time :)

@@TylerJohnstonGuitarIf I can get it into the house without being noticed, I can usually get away with saying "Oh that one? I've had it for years but never played it that much" or if that one looks like failing, I go with "A friend in another band lent it to me". Both have worked so far, but you can only get away with each one the one time. So two extra guitars. Need to come up with a new one now hmmm... lol

This is a nice example of one. I have a violet burst SG and a House of Guitars exclusive rose burst Les Paul. I purchased them for my wife for our 1st two wedding anniversaries. They play and sound great. The only thing I dislike about them is the wraparound tail piece.
I would play it and I probably wouldn't change a thing except for the tuners

Yup
This is a beautiful SG! And it sounds great too! Love the Skyburst and Violet burst finishes the best and Roseburst is sweet also. Nice guitars even though I wish they were an overall gloss finish.
Not an SG fan in general, but this looks great (and the violet and rose bursts also looked great). 490R and 498T pickups are far from my faves. I do like the colour windings though.
I paid $1300 new for a violet burst LP in 06. Same shop had all the colors of SG's for 900 ea. Best new Gibson I've ever bought. It doesn't kill your back and it shreds.
What about the Vixen? As I was writing this I heard ya mention it. I've wanted one for either series forever!
I like how 2000s era guitars are basically vintage now 😂

I liked the pickups on this one - I'd definitely get one of these if I were looking for an SG.
Sounds good, that 498T is really close to a duncam JB
Ive got the same self locking Grover Rotomatics on an Epi LP 60s Tribute and have never had any problems with them
Did you hear Mat drop a line about Futuras and Moderns coming back via the custom shop in that Andertons custom shop video? He mentioned it towards the end on the sofa
Gibson needs to release more guitars with thinner nuts. personally want a sg with a 41mm nut and a rounder neck profile than the usual slim taper. Those kinds of necks are so comfortable to me but so hard to find. Would maybe pick one of these up but they are rare and somewhat expensive.
I like the lacquer sink/ obvious woodgrain too!
This one sings! Was the solo from 14:15 onto 15:15 (with the blue sky backdrop) improv or from a song? Either way, sounded great! Trogly plays great when he likes the guitar he's holding....
That blueburst SG body is smaller than that regular SG body next to it, how come you can't see it?
The only SG i've seen with a slimmer nut width is the SG Xtra Slim @ 1.55 - I did a review video on it.
I've got the posters of the guitars you featured today. The four I have are the SG/pitchfork, LP/nuke, V/legs and an Archtop/woman figure.

Nice! I remember when Gibson used to have fold out pamphlets on SGs and other of their electrics. Still have some of them to this day
Been looking for one just because its an SG. But the prices on Reverb are outrageous.
@TylerJohnstonGuitar

Your best bet would probably be to check Guitar Center’s Used section a couple times a day. Much better prices but you have to jump on stuff.
These look sweet feet! I don’t really like the 498t bridge pup though and you can’t easily change to a 490t because of the color. Of well still super cool!
6:37 I usually say leave it but that's one of the few dings I'd touch up
What a cool.guitar from the era. I love the Goddes LP, especially the BFG green gator and Gary Moore. Too bad the price for those are not friendly anymore like when it first came out Maybe these guitar is not for traditionalist, but as a player, I really dig it I'm still waiting for your review on Gary Moore BFG Austin 🤘
I love the layout. Three-way switch and one volume and one tone. Simple, you know, like a Tele.
I dig everything except the knobs! Sweet!
Honestly, that finish looks super cheap to me. Kinda like a Daisy Rock. If the guitar was just a solid finish like baby blue or pink or whatever, it would look a lot better, IMO. I don't get the need to burst absolutely every guitar.
The Vixens witch came a bit later are cool too.
I have one just like that, plays incredibly well! Swapped pups with a pair of SD antiquity and now plays even better. Everytime i use it on stage i get info requests at the end of the show, its def an eyecatcher
These are rad. Everything about them is cool. Ebony fretboard,less wiring, tinted pearl inlay,those cool looking see thru pick ups, and the non-standard finishes make them great imho! Not crazy about the way the pickups sound but they're not the worst either
I remember the first time going to guitar center and seeing one of those on the wall and it stood out among the rest. Even used one of these on guitar hero 2. Never knew it was made for women
Cute. And it has nibs ! I'd buy a red one. But may you have good luck with the film on scratch plate; sometimes that stuff bonds to the plastic and leaves wicked scum behind that will take a solvent or citrus to remove. Not good to leave that film on - I know from experience thinking I was keeping my guitars "mint". Negative. 🎸
If Gibson were to bring this style back, they should call them “Modern Junior” models. They’re kind of a modern interpretation of the OG Junior and Special models. Simplified but still cool.
The standard scale length thing made me wonder: has Gibson ever produced a short scale (24 inch specifically) guitar? I primarily gig mustangs because the scale length feels right to me, I’d love to have a Les Paul that size too
@joshuafrahm8778
9 ай бұрын
Idk of any 24" but vintage Melody Makers in 22 3/4" scale were made
Man I love the Les Paul and SG Goddess series because of the slim taper necks, 1/4" thinner body slightly smaller bodies ( SG Goddess has a regular size body) and especially the one volume and one tone-- that's all I need--, the 4 knob arrangement is too cluttered for me. Wish that Gibson would bring'em back) and I just love the lighter weight. Great video
Black appears to be plain copper windings
could you not put regular grover locking tuners on it?
@frankwebster9110

I would put Gotoh 3x3's on it. They work perfectly
@KphilbinNashville

Those were the only Grover locking tuners available at that time.
I like that finish a lot.
C'mon Trog.....we know you want to peel that plastic off 😂
Bridge and neck tones are superfantasic ' and that ebony neck - made to be played '
I really dig the finish on this one. I’d be a buyer at 12-1400. Just a pretty SG at the end of the day.
“You want a guitar that won’t break the bank and won’t break your back, and is in a color other than black, white, cherry, or sunburst? You MUST be a woman!”-Gibson
Very nice demo and playing. I got a kick out of the Hendrix.
That's an awesome looking SG!!
Crazy still has the plastic at that age it does look somewhat smaller on you I guess I'm out on that one my hands are way to big sweet looking SG though 🤘
I remember those. I wanted one so bad.
I’ve never been a fan of SGs. I sold the only one I had 4 months after I bought it. I LOVE Les Pauls.

So, this one being THIN at the nut.. What LP Models are WIDE..?? I have big hands, fat fingers and have wondered what might be a wide model..? I have a 12 string acoustic that is better, but in a Les Paul..?

Many companies offer intonatable wraptails such as the hipshot baby grand!
the new Gibson LITE is a monster too. sound explosive. you have to play it to know how good it is.
That guitar sounds beautiful man!
I remember when these came out! I got to play a roseburst Goddess at the factory in Memphis, I wanted to buy it but I was broke. I was kinda offended at the time how Gibson kept emphasizing the simplicity of these guitars, as though I couldn't possibly wrap my head around *gasp* four knobs, haha! But I gave them a pass because these guitars were absolutely gorgeous. Maybe one day I will be able to get my very Goddess or Vixen, I sure hope so!
Sounds pretty good over modern has that vibe clean to metal
I really want this guitar, it's the one I use when I play, guitar hero 3
Do a menace review
Howdy everyone!!
2:43 *haha actually the most offensive thing to me is the name.* 😂 (like everything girl-themed needs a fkkn name like "goddess" or "vixen" like it's marketed to a pack of girl-flavored narcissists.) that sky burst is sick. love SGs. would just swap out the truss cover tbh. 😄 simplified controls isn't necessarily a bad thing. i like that we have variance there. i have an Epi p90 LP that's simple like that. a retro tv yellow model. complex controls is only valuable if it's providing a use for you. sometimes simple gets it done. : )
If Gibson hadn't done such a shitty job on the SG that I bought in 1997 and given me such a hard time about warranty service I would've bought the Violet Burst SG. I haven't even so much as bought a pick with their name on it since then! I'm not impressed with much of the garbage that Gibson has been putting out. But as a woman I wouldn't care about light weight or a small guitar or a certain colour or style being appealing to women. I have small hands but I can wrap them around most guitar necks without a problem. I love the violet colouring. That's the only one that would be appealing to my senses as I love that colour of finish. The pickup windings would've sold me on it too. I don't like the control configuration. If men actually knew how women think they wouldn't be so condescending with the offerings for women's guitars as they did with this one. It isn't like you're stupid because you're one sex or the other.
I may be influenced by owning an original ROBOT, but I just love this guitar.
i just rewatched the goddess lp ep too lol
Best tuners I have ever used simply will not go out of tune
Cool guitar Trogly
Damn that does look good. Honestly I like the fewer knobs. Instruments with 4+ knobs + switches etc. always looks cramped, not only Gibson. Also having to check every position regularly because it's no possible to tell visually also feels impractical to me.

I like that
ngl, I think I would like an SG guitar if this was it.
Somebody get this to Samantha Fish!
To really get a good sound sample from each guitar, you would have to play the exact thing every time with every pickup and every setting. You would also need to use the same strings and picks as well. For historical reference, you should consider doing it and making a searchable reference library available on your website.

Why don't all a Gibsons have these options.
Love the tones on that one
Personally, I always thought the Goddess series was pretty sweet looking even as a man, "Goddess" labelled truss rod cover and all. Especially the violet and sky burst colors (it's not like some words or bright colors have the power to change my genitalia or something). Always wanted one of the LPs, but they were either never in a price range I could afford at the time or I could never find one whenever I did actually have enough cash for one.
I want to tear that plastic off so bad lol, gorgeous colour though
@MrPointy75
9 ай бұрын
Same, it's the first thing I do when I get a new guitar.
I'd bet if you replaced the truss rod cover with a blank cover that no one would realize you were rocking a Goddess in any color especially the rose burst . I'm curious if we'll ever see a three pickup version of these. The re os more than enough space. Of course that would mean a little modification of the current circuit and the switch. But I'm sure these would be more cool and likely sell faster depending on price. Speaking of cases . I wonder why some dealers will sell the case for a guitar that actually comes with a case separately. To Mr it's a bit dishonest and I hope others will chime in on that sentiment. Especially so if there are any dealers watching they can see our distaste with this practice. From what ive seen the Studio I bought used was supposed to come in a case . It was a chainsaw case and personally I don't care for those cases since o had one I stored an applause in. It wasn't the biggest bowl yo could have on one but it wasn't the shallow bowl. Those cases just take up to much space. They could've at least offered a different hard case .

personally, i think the dumb name limits sales. it gets under my skin. if i had one i'd rather play it with no truss cover than one with a name like that. or pop a blank on if i had a few extra bucks. (context: am girl.)
