A Video About J. Cole and Transphobia in Media and Art

Музыка

This video is admittedly a mess and a ramble. But I wanted to use my platform to talk about this. Transphobia is any form is unacceptable and so dangerous and harmful, and having examples like this in the major media of it is disgusting. Protect trans lives. We are valid.

as a young trans man, i’ve actually used my love of rap & hip hop to make cis guy friends at school, including lately the j. cole & kendrick beef, so when i read the lyrics j. cole used it really hurt me. it’s sad how something i love and use to make friends could end up distancing me from them because of transphobia. but others will say “it’s just a song lyric, who’s it hurting?”

I am so, so, so sorry. I deeply struggled with school, and, besides liking English courses, my friendships were the only highlights and the friendships I was able to maintain a bit back then were mainly based off my love of Hip-Hop and R&B. It made me feel so seen and valued and also just enjoyed those conversations and people. I cannot imagine what you are feeling, and I am sending so much love and support to you. I am hoping so much your friends do not treat you any differently, or try to invalidate your feelings because they are 100 percent valid always. If they do, I promise you that you will find better people and actual friends. You are amazing just the way you are, please always remember that as hard it can be sometimes. 💜.

Auntie diaries meant a lot to me too as a trans man, for the same reasons you list, and for seeing that kendrick looks up to his uncle and cousin in that wholesome way. Im pretty disappointed in j.cole and me being offended over his transphobia keeps getting brushed off as just riding for kendrick.

I am so, so glad it had that impact on you. It was such an overwhelming but beautiful moment when I had my first-listen to the album. And I am so sorry people are trying to invalidate your feelings about the lyrics. Kendrick is one of my very favorite artists ever, but, like you, my feelings have nothing to do with that, the lyrics are just so horrible. Thank you so, so much for taking the time to watch the video. 💜.

you don’t have to preface every statement by framing your perspective. It’s totally 100% fine to make this about you. I’m here to hear your perspective, that’s why i’m here never apologize for that.

As a trans man even tho Kendrick did make some decisions I don’t 100% ride with on Auntie Diaries (the f slur), his heart was absolutely in the right place and I think the good of him giving that message to his audience outweighs the route he took to get there. Cole on the other hand just used trans people as fodder for a stupid attempt at an insult that his fans keep trying to justify as a bar even though it doesn’t even make sense

Toxic masculinity in the black community is a real complex intersectional issue. We’re aware it exists, what’s the solution?

I think people like Kendrick are taking it a step in the right direction. Mainstream and respected lyricists like him will continue to exist and as long as songs like Father Time, Auntie Diaries and Mother I Sober can exist and find praise in the community, there will be a point where other conscious hip-hop artists will see that it’s okay to acknowledge the issue of toxic masculinity

When I thought J Cole couldn’t get any worse he pulls this. It’s insane how in 2024 Transphobia can be put in a major piece of media completely unchecked. Really shows how Comfortable the world is targeting them.

wdym cant get any worse? jcole is usually a pretty aware rapper especially on songs like High for Hours or Brackets. Also reaching, there is plenty of racism, homophobia, xenophobia, and other types of hate everywhere? Transphobia is actually going down as people become more tolerant to something that in effect is pretty new (full gender replacement surgery wasnt possible until recently). People hate on new things all the time, but when was the last time you heard a news story about a transgender person being attacked? Istg some people are chronically online to a point where they just believe anything. there has been more violence from police brutality and prison systems that either institutionalize or keep fasley accused people in them for a while, why not discuss that instead?

I will put this in a second comment, and done replying to this after this. There will always be more stories about police brutality and prison issues worldwide towards other minorities because we do not make up that much of the population compared to them. I am not trying to compare any of the issues other communities face vs us because just as equally as horrible stuff happens all around. But of course you will hear less about trans hate attacks and other stories as we are statistically a smaller minority. Look up some of these issues trans people are facing in places like Ohio, Tennessee, Michigan and especially Florida with bathroom, ID bans and unfair and discriminatory requirements in places like Tennessee for even getting on HRT. In some places they want to and sometimes can prosecute people for some of this stuff and they are getting away with it because legally they literally just can right now, and it will only get worse depending on how the upcoming election goes. I am not going to sit here and try to change your mind past this comment because I doubt I will. But everything I said here are statements I can back up with actual facts.

I am a Cole fan and I am in the LGBT+ identity. I really feel bad for my trans people. You go through a lot. I hope it wasn't transphobic. It seems to be him being honest that a trans man was born with a V. What seems to be my personal issue is that he wasn't actively trying to be transphobic but he was being insensitive.
