Always down for some Toto!! Fun fact - Cheryl "Got To Be Real" Lynn does the female vocals on this song! Some of Toto's other bangers include "99", "Pamela", "Animal" (the HORNS!!), "Stranger in Town", and "Stop Loving You". Gotta love David Paich's keyboards here!! Also, I think you would love the Alan Parsons Project. "Eye in the Sky" would be a great place to start.

When the heir to the throne wanted a woman, she didn’t get to say no. He destroyed them, ruined careers and left them with kids he never recognized. He had at least six illegitimate children. He pretended they didn’t exist and moved on to the next mistress when he got bored. Toto has a way of making you dance to and about a disgusting individual.

Cheryl Lynn sings backup on this. “Georgie Porgie” is a very popular traditional English nursery rhyme, dating back to the 19th century. The song was first published with different lyrics, in James Orchard Halliwell’s collection in 1840. The author George Bernard Shaw (born 1856) refers to the lyrics of Georgie Porgie from his childhood, so this version must be at least that old. Although there are no evidences about this, the lyrics of “Georgie Porgie” are a reference to the 1st Duke of Buckingham, the courtier George Villiers (1592-1628). Th

Makes sense, they were both on Columbia's roster at the time..She was probably working on her own stuff in a nearby recording room (I've been there, they had 4 back then) and someone from Toto says, "Hey , Cheryl's here.. for the chorus --maybe she could.?"

This song was Toto's follow-up to their Top 40 debut hit, Hold The Line. The song was a bigger hit on the Billboard Soul chart than the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It peaked at the #18 spot on the Billboard Soul chart. On the Billboard Hot 100 chart, it peaked at the #48 spot during the early summer of 1979. The female backup vocals belong to the one and only r&b singer, Cheryl Lynn. The song is a banger indeed!!!

He (David Paich) said the idea for the chorus in that song came from a conversation he had with is friend who recently had a child. He asked "What cha been reading these days?" His friend hands him a nursery rhyme book. "Georgie Porgie, Puddin’ and Pie, Kissed the girls and made them cry, When the boys came out to play Georgie Porgie ran away" The rest was history!

Several members of Toto (the guitar player, drummer, piano player) were Boz Scaggs backup band prior to Toto. You may have reacted to him This is where the R&B vibe comes from. In fact, Steve Lukethar (on vocals here) sounds so much like Boz on this cut. The female vocal is Cheryl Lynn who had a disco hit in the late 70s (Got to be Real) you'd recognize it if you heard it. Probably was in a few movies or commmercials. You wanna know the talent level here? Steve Lukethar was THE guitar player on so many records in the 80s If you hear any killer guitar solos on an 80s hit most likely it was Steve Think, Running with the Night (Lionel Richie) Beat it (Michael Jackson, all guitars and co-writing credit except for the Eddie Van Halen solo) In fact, he was very instrumental in the making of the entire Thriller album So many more The rest of the members have just as impressive a resume. Jeff Porcaro (rhe drummer, RIP, is a legend) lots of work with Steely Dan to name a few David Paich (the piano player and leader) was a known songwriter, producer and musical director for several famous artists. George Benson, Rod Stewart etc.. He also worked on the Thriller album Toto. Goofy name, but killer musicians & songwriters! Dig deep. They have lots of good ones Try: 99 Goodbye Girl I'll be over you Hydra Enjoy your reactions!! Take care of the little ones ;-)

Toto has a big group of fans in Latam because of their mixing of different styles cause we love it. Like Los Jaivas from Chile. Toto came to Chile several times with total success because they are masters. I loved my Toto's Greatest Hits cassette!! I hope you can react to 99. Best regards from Chile!! 🙂

I never knew this was Toto's song -smooth. I would say I love Toto, but only know 3 songs. Jeff Porcaro is one of my favorite drummers - so solid. He played with everybody; too many artists to list here.

I grew up in the Caribbean listening to Toto, & other Genres of music scene back in the 70's -80's was mostly crossovers, innocent & clean vibes. I get transported back in time to my youthful & carefree days. Here some other music suggestions you might want to check out that are also similar category. You'll Never Know - Hi-Gloss", "Keiko Matsui - Mover", Europa (Earth's Cry Heaven's Smiley - Gato Barbieri (composed by Santana) enjoy.

Keyboard player, David Paich wrote the song with his father Marty helping compose some of the music (as he often did). Those background vocals are performed by Cheryl Lynn who was a Broadway performer and a common background singer for the time. She was a touring singer with several bands also. Including for Diana Ross where she would handle the parts sung by the Supremes when she did those songs from Diana's early years. In her memoirs she says she tried out for the first season "American Idol" where the preliminary judges (tho ones you don't see) told her she was too old. Since then the show has changed their age limits.

To be clear, he’s not the player…she is. “I’m not the only one that holds you….” from the bridge of the song explains that SHE’S the one who has been sleeping around and he now regrets that he told her that she’s the “only one.”

Of course this is Cheryl Lynn singing backup. Cheryl was a contestant on the old Chuck Barris produced "The Gong Show". She actually had two big R&B hits, "Got To Be Real" and "Encore". Give "Encore: a listen.

These guys were session players who met working on other people's records. Cheryl Lynn on back up vocals. The phrase about "Georgy Porgy" was a playground taunt. A children's rhyme to tease boys who tried to talk to girls.

Yes, as noted, that's Cheryl Lynn on backing vocals. Fun fact: one of the writers for Lynn's big hit ("Got to be Real") was David Paich, the keyboardist for Toto, who also wrote this song. (It's guitarist Steve Lukather singing here, as he did on "Rosanna". Paich sings "Africa".) Paich was the primary songwriter for the band. And you may recall that he (and various other members) had played with Boz Scaggs before forming Toto; Paich also co-wrote "Lido Shuffle" and "Lowdown", both of which you've covered. That said, Jordan's praise for "Hold the Line" has me jonesing for more Bobby Kimball vocals, too. Enough of this mellow stuff, let's rock! So, may I suggest "I'll Supply the Love" or "Goodbye, Elenore"? Not that Lukather and Paich aren't fine singers, but gimme some Bobby! JMO.

The whole rhyme is “Georgie Porgie, Pudding and pie, Kissed the girls and made them cry, when the girls came out to play, Georgie Porgie ran away”. Some of the earliest references to it are from the 1800’s with lots of regional twists the words used.

Professor of Rock's channel just did a video on this and they said they were stuck on the chorus because none of the band could really sing it and make it sound good...and think Cheryl Lynn was in studio said she would show them how to sing it...she did it and they loved it.

This is literally my first time ever hearing this song! I wish I'd known it as a kid. We used to sing-song the nursery rhyme to our cousin George growing up because it annoyed him so much. Lol Georgie Porgie, pudding and pie Kissed the girls and made them cry. When the boys came out to play Georgie Porgie ran away. His sister was Susan, and we used to sing Wake Up Little Susie (by The Everly Brothers) to her to bug her too. They hated it that there were no songs to sing back to my older brother or me because our names aren't in any songs. Lol. Good times. :)
