Hi, Glad you enjoyed the Portrait. I do enjoy the painterly approach, it looks great, but the best part is that it’s fun to do as well. Thanks for watching Best wishes, James
Brilliant portrait...loose... right on a knife's edge... I'm really aspiring to adopt your impressionist style in my own water color paintings...and hopefully I get to develop my own aesthetic sensibility that approaches yours in impeccable accuracy. I'm very fortunate to have found a mentor in you through your videos.☺️

Glad you enjoyed the video. Impressionist Watercolour is a wonderful aim and well worth the effort to try and understand. One of the most important things to do is to understand how to simplify things to get the essence of the subject and nothing more. Glad you found me! Best wishes, James
It's nice to have a model like Robert. He has a very nice characteristic face. The blue ish color really stand out well. Nice job James.

Hi Anermil, Glad you enjoyed the Portrait. It was a lot of fun to do. Sometimes I I think I’ve been working on painting for a couple of minutes, but then it turns out it’s been 15 minutes, so I know now that I’m not a good judge of time! I hope you managed to have a go at a Portrait, and if you can find someone to sit for you, that would be great. Good to hear from you. Best wishes, James
This was fascinating video for me. I was amazed at the likeness you achieved in such a short time. It was very interesting to me to see the effect of the addition of the pencil marks toward the end. Those simple marks made his beard read much more clearly. I seem to always want to add some pen marks to the ends of my paintings. I like the more subtle effect of your pencil!

Hi Laura, Poet painting is so interesting. When you paint from life, you have to paint relatively quickly, otherwise you lose your sitter. I do enjoy the pencil marks at the end of the picture. I think it just makes the picture read more easily, but anyway I like it. I look forward to hearing how your pencil work goes. Best wishes, James
James! I'm amazed at your portraits - something I haven't had the courage to try, yet! Please tell Robert you sold me on his Vespasian series! Just ordered the first one - love historical fiction!!! Anxious for more landscapes ...

Hi Robin, Glad you enjoyed the Portrait painting. I do enjoy painting Portraits, they are quite intense though but in the end well worth the effort. I hope you enjoy Roberts books, Getting out into the landscape soon! Thanks for watching. Best wishes, James
Wow James so nice! The way you do the eyes in your portraits has really been a help to me. Regarding pencil lines after the fact, have you seen many of Cezannes watercolors? I have a book of his sketches and lovely watercolors and it mentions how he consistently would add pencil lines at the end or even in the middle of painting.

I certainly enjoy the pencil work and for me, it add something to it as well as being a fun thing to do at the end of the painting. Thanks for watching, Best wishes, James
Absolutely fascinated with your process but I’m also amazed you use your fingers to tap out colour. Everything I’ve read and learnt is not to use fingers because of the oils in the skin.

Hi Penny, Glad you enjoyed watching the Portrait process. Portraits are a really fascinating thing to do. I do use my fingers when I need to as it’s convenient. I always have them with me.! I think there clean enough not to worry about conservation, the paper does get handled anyway. Thanks for watching Best wishes, James
Like your subject James you have really caught the character of the man. Your deliberate placing of the brush strokes never ceases to amaze me. I think you should be on commission for the author - thanks for introducing him, I had not heard of him until now. Have downloaded one of his books on my kindle.

Hi Linda, Glad you enjoyed the painting. I do like to keep it simple as much as possible and one phrase I like, is to get the maximum from the minimum. To try and express as much as I can on each stroke. Thanks for watching. Best wishes, James

Very informative and enjoyable. When you rinse the brush between colors, are you wiping it on the side of the water cup or wiping it off on a rag or something? I tend to get too much paint and too much water in my palette when I am getting some colors ready. So the color is very strong and there is lots of it! I realize it will take much more painting to improve.

Hi, Glad you enjoyed the video I’ve got a tea towel folded up on my leg, and after I’ve washed the brush, I dab it on that to remove the excess water. Knowing how much water to use, I think probably comes with experience. I’ll probably talk about it more in future videos. Thanks for watching. Best wishes, James
