Not only that but in the 3ds games you get an exp share, which boosts your Pokémons level even if you don't battle with it. So really, MagiKarp is easy to raise now compared to the older games where your only means of raising it were either trading it to another version and battling with it there or else keep swapping it out till it evolves into Gyarados at level 20.
