A very frustrating episode // The Wire Season 1 Episode 11 Reaction and Commentary

Ойын-сауық

At the end of this video, I had so many thoughts but none at the same time. I think they did a great job of showing the frustrations we experience.

Even better are those for us who saw the show and the scene long before it became a meme. It ended up being the most famous moment of The Wire.

That's a really good read on Rawls. Rawls is actually pretty competent as seen here, unlike most other higher ups in the police, so I always believed that the reason he resents McNulty so deeply is because he sees himself in him, they're both alike. Difference is, Rawls decided to play politics and climb the ladder. This show has a great way to humanise just about everyone.

I always like your take on Rawls and McNulty's conflict. I can 💯 see it from that perspective. It also explains why despite hating tf out of him he always finds McNulty's antics amusing to some capacity.

@@monadreher2428 without entering details that could spoil things, Rawls always seems more amused than angry whenever anyone does something outside the system, which is usually Jimmy, but not only. He knows how broken it all is because he understands the job, unlike some of the other bosses, he just won't put his career on the line trying to go against it. As despicable as he is as a person, he's a really interesting character for me.

@@thegrimner Oh yes friend absolutely no spoilers but once again very good analysis on Rawls! Landsman is the same way to me as well although clearly nowhere near Rawls levels of contempt. Rawls is a great character imho, probably say he's top 20. I can't wait for our newbie to get deeper into the series 🙌

There is a legitimately unique thrill to finding the origin of a meme in the wild. Most of the time I either look it up, or just don't know, but then you see where one came from and you're like "holy shit"

Show does a fantastic and sobering reminder that so many ppl get swept or forgotten in the pursuit of justice. So you question what is really the solution? But also…politics suck man!

17:25 this is a very pivotal moment between Avon and Stringer. As you continue the show, you’ll notice moments like these where little breadcrumbs are scattered that will indeed challenge the relationship between Avon and Stringer. This is one of those breadcrumb moments.

@7:34 I think calling what Rawls, Burrell, and other higher ups engage in as "corruption," is using the wrong term. Corruption is being complicit and even personally profiting from criminal activity (taking payoffs, being personally involved, etc). What Rawls/Burrell/etc engage in is bureaucratic dysfunction. They have lost sight of what their (and their departement's) true duty is (crime preventions and suppression) and have become lost in metrics and statistics (crime rates, case clearances, etc). In my 32 years in law enforcement, I've seen departments (local) and agencies (federal) get lost in these and lose sight of trusting how your street level investigators and first line supervisors prioritize who and what they concentrate on. When you get above a certain level (including me) in a department/agency some people lose track of the fact that they aren't imbedded in that information anymore and stop relying on the people below you that still actually are in the thick of it all. The higher you get, the more you rely on statistics and other metrics to judge how "well" you are fighting crime. And when you start making those metrics all important to the detriment of the efforts of your actual investigators, you become an obstacle and not an aid to them. Instead of actually helping your people do their work, you're trying to change graphs and charts, keeping the mayor (or whoever) happy with those same graphs and stats instead of focusing on actually supporting quality cases. Seen it too many times... That's what Rawls, Burrell, and other "brass" suffer from, not corruption. And in this case, of course, you have "brass" who may have never worked a real complex drug conspiracy case in their whole careers, dictating that a case be advanced by a "buy-bust" (an unsafe buy as it turned out) when the experienced drug investigators knew it was impractical/inefficient/unsafe and/or wouldn't really advance the case that much. Always bad. Always listen to your people who actually have the experience you yourself lack, no matter how much you "rank" them.

Rough episode: Kima, McNulty, Bubs, Kima's girl... So much suffering. It's all about the price of doing a good deed. To me, the worst is Bubs, trying to get clean and then risking it for Kima. I'm not sure I believe Wee Bey that they were going to let Kima live. I think Stringer grasps the narrative because it means they can blame it on Little Man.

"Hey. Fuck your money." LMAOOO Rawls is one of the biggest assholes *ever* in life but there's no denying that he's a boss for a reason. John Doman's performance is personally my favorite in the whole series. I can legit watch Rawls on the screen all day lmao. "It's like if you want to move up in Baltimore, you kind of have to always look the other way." Not just Baltimore beloved, but almost anywhere else in the world. Baltimore may be the main focus but the city can honestly be a representation for almost any place *anywhere* . Just another reason of many why this show is absolutely up there. I *love* the D'Angelo and Wee-Bey scene. Could legit write a essay off that one scene alone. But the gist of it is is that he's aware of how expendable people are in "the game", family ties or not, following the rules or not. Something most of his fellow peers aren't that too aware of in contrast despite them all knowing that things like Little Man's "disappearance" are a part of "the game". And this is a show that definitely wants you to get frustrated. It's eye opening for this exact reason. Because babyyyyyyy the next four seasons are going to make you upset (possibly depressed lmao) even more 😂
