A Trappers Worst Nightmare...
No trapper wants this to happen. While I was getting a red fox out of a trap alive, the fox escaped and got away.

"Worst nightmare?" Try catching a female wolverine & having to release her!! Then having to run hundreds of yards on snowshoes w her trying to kill you. THATS a nightmare! Or an eagle caught in a fox set. He shredded my control blanket in seconds. Was PISSED!! Was able to tangle him up w shredded blanket around wings just long enough to release him & RUN!!

Some of my first and fondest memories are of checking muskrat and raccoon traps with my father. I couldn't wait to get up early in the morning and check those muskrat sets. We were not often as successful with the raccoon sets, Possums, skunks, one time we got a crow… One particular pond we had to stop trapping because someone was stealing our muskrats. When fur prices dropped in the mid-80s that was pretty much the end of my trapping experience.

I was out checking my traps and had a bobcat in a leg hold. They weren't in season yet so I had to release it. I used a carpet to cover it and release the trap. It didn't even fight back. A nice female, it laid down and allowed me to even touch it. I got the trap off and was ready for any attack. I had my side arm ready. It looked right at me, licked it's paw and sat there looking at me. The thing that changed my life was when it walked up to me and sniffed my boot, did a head butt type thing to my leg and sat there looking at me. I had a change of heart that day. I haven't trapped since. Today I take in stray cats, unwanted pets or the mean ones. They get used to me and I find them homes. I had about 100- 110 conibears, 100 220's, 35 330's and 60 leg hold traps. I did nuisance trapping, gathered a lot of fur. Coyote, fox, fisher, muskrat and mink helped me buy a CR 250.

@@TheRealestEric trapping does more to keep wildlife populations controlled then hunting. Most states don't allow shooting beaver or muskrat. Seeing much less shooting a mink is rare. Fish and game departments back trapping as a viable effective animal control. Lots of KZread videos on the proper humaine way to trap. This guy does a great job.

Carson Cordell that's what a game warden is for. when your legally trapping it is illegal for anyone to tamper with your set in any way. I have that problem from time to time and after the warden is done informing them of their crime and their options they generally settle up with me out of court so they don't have to pay a higher cost to any loss it may have cost me.

Still, when your dog gets caught in a spring trap (by the leg that just came out of a cast) in a popular river island park, one does get a bit angry and perhaps the trap gets destroyed in a fit of fury. The trapper never contacted me for the trap after I reported it to Fish and Wildlife. Maybe he did not want to face a very irate, some say crazy, woman? PS I am not against trapping, I do it myself, but I would NOT put one where people and pets tend to roam.

Well, I'm an old white woman, a progressive activist. That said, guns and traps have their place in many societies and people shouldn't knock what they clearly don't understand. This guy is actually being a thoughtful steward of the land. Releasing that fox is dangerous; releasing a wolverine or bobcat can get you killed, yet good hunters do these things.

1armedgal You'd be singing a completely different tune if you actually understood anything about conservation of wildlife. If hunters and trappers didn't keep populations in check, wildlife would be roaming all over every developed area there is. Wildlife would be in your trash, harassing your children and domestic animals, even dead in the side of the road. The more we develop, the less quality habitat there will be. And, when wildlife populations grow too large for their habitat, things start to turn south. Fast. Populations become diseased and many will starve to death due to competition for food sources. We ARE OBLIGATED to help all wildlife in any way we can. It is OUR fault that wildlife habitat is diminishing and it is OUR fault that wildlife populations need to be managed in this way. If you don't like it then: move out of your house and go live in the woods; stop driving your car; stop consuming electricity; stop buying meat and produce from the grocery store, because farms and slaughter houses need space. Space that come from the destruction of wildlife habitat; just stop being alive in general. If you don't agree with the killing of wildlife then you should stop contributing to the decline of it's habitat.

1armedgal uneducated you are. seriously if we didn't trap to reduce populations and out a few dollars in our pocket from it. the threat of overpopulation means the spread of disease which can affect multiple species, starvation which can cause them to start invading your home. if that occurs then there are other species of animals that are extinct. Respect a trapper, they insure the survival of all species.

I have seen many fox and coyotes suffer from mange. I have shot my fair share of coyotes with mange. Winter months in Michigan with no hair. Rough way too die. Conservation helps so much. Sometimes diseases like that have weird cycles. But if you see a fox or coyote with mange. Best thing to do is kill it. They can not drive themselves to the nearest vet clinic and don't have Obama Care to cover the visit

Pay no attention to others opinions. They're not able to see the big picture for lack of conservation knowledge. Not everyone understands the vital role trapping plays in enhancing the environment for all Wild Life an Humans. Continue enjoying what you do an pass it on down the line. Hunting an trapping is what made the expansion west attainable. Share an educate those who are willing to listen an let the rest know that it's their right to feel the way they do just as it's your right to do what you enjoy. Men are born with two eyes & two ears but only one tongue. So they should watch an listen twice as much as they speak.

The fella checks his traps-and land- frequently. Animals get themselves stuck sometimes in a natural setting without any human intervention. Would you be as critical if he were rescuing an animal caught in brambles? The sad truth is that many foods obtained in a supermarket are often kept or produced in abhorrent conditions, with who knows how many chemicals being used at differing times in the cycle of production & processing. One often has to decide upon the lesser of two evils. Many trapped animals are not eaten, but are relocated to safer and more appropriate environments which is critical to species survival. It is easy to make judgements based on seeing a video of a few minutes duration, but said videos usually only give us a glimpse of whats happening and aren't comprehensive nor all-inclusive as to what happens next.
